Art Criticism: How to Criticize a Work of Art

Art Criticism: How to Criticize a Work of Art / A four step process This is what I give my students as a guide to art appreciation: 1. Description- What do I see? Study the work in detail carefully. Describe the work in full detail. Be factual. Mention everything you see. 2. Analysis- How is the work organized? Look for and talk about the elements and principles of art and design that seems to dominate the work. Look at how the artist has used The Elements of Art / • Lines- real and implied, curved and straight, direction of movement / • Shapes, Space, Forms- Are the shapes geometric or free-form? Where is the horizon? Where is your point of view as the viewer? (Above, below, in the work, or outside) / • Colors- Warm, cool, bright, dull, soft, bold, etc. / • Value- light: reflecting much light; dark: absorbing much light. / • Texture-Both the medium and the objects portrayed: rough, smooth, shinny, dull Look at The Principles of Design / • Rhythm- Are there repeats of elements or images? / • Movement- Is there an illusion of action? How does the eye move around the work? / • Balance- Formal or Symmetrical, informal or asymmetrical / • Proportion- The size relationships between one part to the whole or one part to another part / • Variety- Visual difference and contrast within the work / • Emphasis- What part is dominant, and what part is subordinate? / • Unity- Does the work hold together? 3. Interpretation- What is happening? This is more than storytelling. As in literature, you need to interpret and generalize from data given. You need to find the metaphor or allegory in the work. What is the artist trying to communicate? Use your intelligence, imagination and courage to explain and tell the meaning of the work. This is based on the facts you have observed and your own life experiences. You can express your feelings, but they must be backed up by the observations you have made about the work. 4. Judgment- What do I think of the work? Does the work hold together visually? Does it communicate with the viewer? Judge whether the work succeeds or fails. You give your opinion backed by the three steps above. To make a judgment, you need to be honest with yourself. You need to know why you feel the way you do. Three Theories of Judging Art Imitationalism -Some people believe that art should imitate what we see in the real world. / Formalism – Some people believe that the most important part of a work is in the use of the principles of design and the elements of art. A work is successful if the texture, color, lines, etc are organized properly. / Emotionalism – Some people believe that the most important part of the work is the mood the artist communicates. Perhaps it is best to use all three theories when judging a work of art. Adapted from many sources, including Arttalk by Rosalind Ragans

Selective Coloring Time To Share

I had the honor of doing a collaboration with Jo O’Brien / Please also check out her portfolio it is amazing!! / I have also had lots of questions how I do this. / She had an image that we worked on together and I did some post processing using selective coloring. Its a technique that I would suggest everyone try or learn. Go Here / if you have not yet seen it. There are several ways to achieve this. / I use photoshop elements and find it the easiest to use for doing this. / - Trace the images that I want to leave color using the lasso tool (Can take a long / time but its worth it) / - After you have traced everything you want to leave color goto select and click inverse. / - By clicking inverse you are now on the outside of the images that you traced. / - Click on enhance and adjust color then adjust hue/saturation. / - Turn the saturation all the way off to achieve the black and white. / - Then you can go to enhance and click on adjust lighting then goto shadows and / highlights to adjust your black and with levels. / - Click on select then click deselect and you image should be finished. From there you can go in and play with the saturations to bring out more color or whatever you want to do. Its a technique that you would be surprised can save any image you take if you are creative. So if you like go check out the Image and leave a comment of what you think. / I am here if anyone has any questions I would be happy to help anyone out if I can.

She mentioned these elements to me after asking for a critique of my work. She told me that these elements are highly regarded guidelines used in print competitions, but they would be beneficial for me to use in critiquing my own work. Maybe you can use them too! LIES PERCEPTIONS AND BELIEFS BY RL HALL AND LINAJI A collaboration of loving work between rlhall & linaji – Webs & Layers Your Spiritual side is wise, intuitive, creative, loving, compassionate, peaceful, forgiving, always aspiring to truth and goodness – or – your life is lived in confusion, anger, and perhaps, even, layers of lies and deceit.” ~ Dr. John Sarno, The Divided Mind “If you cannot find the truth right where you are, where else do you expect to find it?” / ~ Dogen “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye.” ~ Antoine Saint-Exupéry “If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.” ~ William Blake _“Believe that your life is worth living, and your belief will create the fact.” ~ William James Acceptance ~ Robert Frost When the spent sun throws up its rays on cloud / And goes down burning into the gulf below, / No voice in nature is heard to cry aloud / At what has happened. Birds, at least must know / It is the change to darkness in the sky. / Murmuring something quiet in her breast, / One bird begins to close a faded eye; / Or overtaken too far from his nest, / Hurrying low above the grove, some waif / Swoops just in time to his remembered tree. / At most he thinks or twitters softly, ‘Safe! / Now let the night be dark for all of me. / Let the night be too dark for me to see / Into the future. Let what will be, be.’_ _Layers of Beliefs I have unfurled my wisdom / And before me / I only know / Truths / That have been born and branded / By my hand / How can it be any other way? I have heard and have been told / Of / About / Yours… / But My core is the listener / The one who knew before the knowing / Or of the Telling We are parted now.. / maybe for 4 years or 10 / Maybe it is not again But the knowing you / Was like a root plant / Better left in the shade of its’ own calling Than to open to the sun of my smile / Or yours. Past Lives are just that, / Past.. The Now that pulsates and thrives Has been dropped from view.. It is no longer about you Time for a new lesson Time for a new view._ Thank You Everyone, espically RL Hall for linking into my heart and for setting up most of this show.. her finding the amazing quotes from our favorite poets and leaders made the core of our work shine!! What a pleasure this collaboration was between us!

This quick tutorial for beginners was based on a request from CJ Hummel – she was looking for a way to tanslate the positions and names of the tools from my regular tutorials for use in PS Elements. Sometime in the next week or so I’ll post a page with the PSE tools and the corresponding names/places of the PSCS tools. For now, I’ve written a quick tutorial for beginners that will show you how to replace a white or poor sky with a new sky. (Keep in mind…this is my first look at PSE). You can download the tutorial from here: Replacing A Sky with Photoshop Elements 7 (note: version 7 was all I could get on trial)

So what’s your story? Time to share and this is mine. Do you ever wonder what goes on in other redbubble members lives? – in the field? what do the images look like before the edit?? what sort of elements are others dealing with when composing their images?? This is a little snapshot of mine. I thought that seen as though no one is going to do a “This is your Life” on me anytime soon then why not do one myself and hopefully it’ll catch on and I’ll be able to get a glimpse into all of your daily worlds.. These are ‘snapshots’ from a typical week for me…please note the snapshots are taken with little artistic regard. I am lucky to live just close enough to some fabulous but challenging country side. While shooting this I needed to be aware of a few things like the road conditions, enough water, all my equipment -der! and although I don’t venture far from the car I need to watch for wild pigs, buffulo and if near water of course the crocodiles!! I mainly go by myself (with my sleeping daughter in the back and oblivious to all!) I also make sure people know were I am going. I often have a giggle because well I just love being an adventurer..and I wonder what my rb friends in other parts of Australia are going through? traffic, cold, isolation?..and rb friends in Canada, UK, USA, Asia?? Do you have battles with the elements or your native wildlife too? Firstly…the place. / Next…the temperature outside! not too bad today 35 C Degrees or 95 F (lately its been 38C) / / / Next …the country, its expanse, its isolation (I am yet to see another person there!) / Next …me looking at my possible models in the landscape. / Next …the shot as I see it -looking through my argus 75 and taking the shot with a canon dslr with a 100mm macro. / Next …a check to make sure a certain someone is happy in her air-conditioned comfort. / And the final product at home after a meeting with Mr Adobe. So bring it on …show me a day in your life!! Cheers Jules

I’m discovering the line of a boundary-how it fluxes around me, protecting me, strengthening my energy. It is a connection of radiant minerals-cosmic forces, their colors and elements inexhaustible resources: the wisdom of the old, the power of the living energy of color, silence, the planetary atomic spirit…

I had this in My Writing for too long before I realised it was better suited to My Journal ! / (BIG Thanks Jo for enlightening me!) . Using one of the new tools on the Redbubble promo-page , I’ve made a new page on my website. Yes, I had to edit a few attributes of the code , but now I have My own Redbubble page on my site. This is just the start. I’ll be adding more to as time goes by. It’s an embedded flash image, so you may need to modify your computer settings or download the latest version to see what’s on the page! And now I’ve moved the article, I’m seriously going to have to modify that page. Soon. Next year maybe! :D

A Nine Months' Walk

Non-fiction A walk is a great idea A walk in England is a pleasure, a better idea than a drive, I mean. A walk in the English countryside is a most divine experience. You can either lose yourself or discover yourself, a great experience, either way. A back-pack of essentials (depends on your cravings, whims, vices or cares) a camera, a well covered body, a free mind and a searching soul is all I had during those several walks spanning just short of nine months’ wandering in England. On most days, my back-pack of essentials contained a jacket, water bottles, a few cans of beer, home-made sandwiches, munchies picked from Tesco, Lidl or even Somerfields, a note-book, a few cameras mostly bought from 99 P or £ 1 shops. It was only in November 2004 that I was able to buy a decent replacement for my lost cameras during my homeless days. 46, Amberley Road, Slough, Berkshire is where most of my memorable walks originated from and ended. I have no reason to think that I’m someone so special that Dr.Bola brought me to his house here, set me up in one of the twin attics, showed me around the house, explained the intricacies of the kitchen, the bath, handed me a set of duplicate keys to his entire house and asked to make myself comfortable. Once you are on Peascod Street, the high Street of Windsor, you are in a different world altogether from the rest of the Berkshire County. This street has the charm that can surpass that of being on Oxford Street or the Regent Street in the heart of London, which are rather, quite, flat. Peascod St. descends from the hillock on which the Windsor Castle is situated. Probably it’s the slope that gives it the charm of being on a hill station and the absence of any vehicular traffic makes it much more relaxed and the absence of the noise of Central London makes it far more pleasurable than the areas that I have combed with my pair of 54 years old legs. I’m told that I walk a lot. Lot more than many people that we know. Once I’d stocked my backpack with essentials from Waitrose, my favorite F&B store in Windsor which is a division of the famous Marks & Spencer chain and most reasonably priced, I would climb the slope of the street, go around the castle and settle down on my favorite bench by the river Thames facing Eton with Windsor just behind my back. ..........

The Guests

Non-fiction ‘The Guests’...from another world… Hand painted / enamel-on-board This is a part of a real conversation between a great friend of mine and me…....here at RB…I quote verbatim… She: / “I TELL YOU TRUE THIS IS great icon… for you .. the Chief.. Guest here for awhile.. then offf we go!!!! beautiful these guys…” Me: / “Tell you what,,, I’d forgotten to sign this one…so I deleted…signed and rehosted…another friend ‘Look who’s here’ has arrived…can you think of names for these ‘beautiful’ guys……Thanks xo” She: / “They are a cross between fish and sperm… so I think they are the creators.. I have to say one more thing.. they look like’…..Bellini’s.. almost your name but Itallian in sound…..Bellini’s / Bellani’s…Bellini’s.. the ‘Creators’ swimming towards each moment to plant their wise souls to an available idea… then Wham… the joining of Bellini’s Creators and the egg of an idea… you get manifested form… you get the idea in action …thought to manifestation… / How’s that Bellaniji?” Me: / “LOL!!! I’m doubling up with laughter…will answer you properly later…ha..ha..ha!!!!!!...ha..ha.. / ha!!!!!!!...ha..ha.. / ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!... / ha..ha..ha!!!!!!!...” She: / “Glad you find them funny,,, cause really mr Bellani,, your Bellini’s are way over the top!!! / lolololo” Me: / “I found you to be funny…lolol..considering you as a good friend…I go over the top sometimes with you…especially when I’m over the line with a few drinks…lol!...if you mind that I’ll not joke with you again…but I know… as you’d told me in one of your B’mails that we certainly can poke each other and have fun…OK???” She: / “did you not see my lololo I do not add if I am not laughing too… you are silly man sometimes and I do get pissed when you comment on things that mean more than your eye can see.. but that is only with my work… with your work you want laugh and see my fun.. this good thing I think Kumarji… very good indeed…”

Thank you Robin Monroe for this loving gift of a poem…I decided to pair this with The Brent River, at Greenford I quote Robin; / “Since this poem was written just for you in another time once upon a dream:) If you would like you can use it with one of your brilliant work of art since they are so full of Life, Love and Joy I think this section of the poem would go wonderful with one of your pieces. Let your love flow like the river… / Let it run wild and free…. / A promise that you can deliver… / Dreams are for you / Dreams are for me / Dreams can come true – Believe! Also, it would bring me joy and be such an honor to have my words associated with your beautiful Art….Robin:)” Unquote… beautiful indeed dear…thank you once again…I honor you for this…
