The Red-bellied Black Snake Pseudechis porphyriacus is found across eastern Australia and is typically associated with water bodies such as creeks, rivers, dams and other ‘wet’ places. However, in saying that, they are also found in a variety of other habitats such as woodlands, grasslands, and even urban areas. Frogs are the main prey for this species, which explains their association with water bodies. This species is one of Australias venomous snakes. Click on ‘View Larger’ for better viewing. The Mulga Snake Pseudechis australis (also commonly known as the King Brown) is not a brown snake at all, but a member of the Black Snake family. This species is venomous and should not be approached. As you can see in this image, he was starting to get a bit cranky about our presence seen by his ‘flattening’. It is one of the most common elapid species of western NSW. This one was found north of Wilcannia. The Bandy Bandy Vermicella annualata is found across most areas of Australia, however, it is rarely seen due to its habits. More specifically, this species lives almost exclusively under the ground surface, feeding on blind snakes. It is usually only seen after heavy rain, when the saturated soil brings individuals to the surface looking for a dry spot! This individual was found during searches around Moree, north-western NSW, after a heavy rain event. Another pic of a Bandy-Bandy Vermicella annulata. This species is relatively widespread across eastern Australia. Recent research suggests that this species uses chemical cues to located blind snakes under the surface on which it feeds almost exclusively on. This specimen was found near Moree in north-western NSW. The Eastern Tiger Snake Notechis scutatus is found across eastern and southern Australia in a variety of habitats, but almost always in association with creeklines, damp soaks, wetland, or where frogs hang out (they love to feed on frogs). Stephens’ banded snakes (Hoplocephalus stephensii) are classed as rare in Queensland.
For those that dont like venomous snakes, this ones for you! This Eastern Brown Snake Pseudonaja textilis was captured using a 10mm macro setting. This species is the second most venomous land snake in the world behind the Inland Taipain, also an Australian species. This animal is not full grown yet, showing typical juvenile head patterns. It was photographed while doing biodiversity surveys near Goulburn, NSW, AU.
