Forget your day and night job
Ian Rilen was a legendary Sydney rock and roller and a member of bands such as Rose Tattoo, X and Sardine V. He died earlier this year and is much missed for his wild and wonderful ways. I found this candid back stage shot of him and his then wife Stephanie preparing to go onstage at the Trade Union Club in Sydney’s Surry Hills way way back in the early 80’s. They were in Sardine V at that time and when I look at this shot now the eighties rush back. Oh my misspent youth. :) So Vale Ian Rilen, I so hope things are rocking were ever you are. This shot is for you.
“This Charming Man” is an up-tempo song, featuring guitar, bass, and drums. The song begins with a short introductory guitar riff; and after about four seconds the rhythm section. The vocals are first heard eight seconds after this. The chorus is heard only twice. The first time it is followed by a brief pause and the second time by the closing of the song. Lyrics – Marr/Morrissey (The Smiths) A punctured bicycle / On a hillside desolate / Can nature make a man of me yet ? And in this charming car / This charming man Why pamper life’s complexity / When the leather runs smooth / On the passenger seat ? I would go out tonight / But I haven’t got a stitch to wear / This man said “It’s gruesome that someone so handsome should care” A jumped up pantry boy / Who never knew his place / He said “return the ring” / He knows so much about these things / He knows so much about these things I would go out tonight / But I haven’t got a stitch to wear / This man said “It’s gruesome that someone so handsome should care” / Na, na-na, na-na, na-na, this charming man … / Na, na-na, na-na, na-na, this charming man … A jumped up pantry boy / Who never knew his place / He said “return the ring” / He knows so much about these things / He knows so much about these things / He knows so much about these things
My side gig as an archaeologist is often tedious work. Sometimes though, it is truly rewarding. Like today, my team was on a dig and we came across this fossilized ‘cassette tape’ from the ‘eighties era’. After carbon dating in the lab and some fine brushwork by my counterpart Hans we dated it to the ‘New Wave Era’ and as best as we can decipher it is from a person or group named Jane Siberry. / Nearby we unearthed a pair of ‘ankle warmers’ and a ‘mesh-back hat’ but soon realized they were frauds made in 2003.
This is a geeky 80’s design created for the Earth Hour Challenge. / / If you understand it then it means you’re old enough to be a fair contributor to the world energy problem and an equal part of the solution. / / But what is the solution? / / Well it’s clear to me that not just one but a whole range of newer, greener, renewable energy sources will save the day and I believe that people like you and me should be given the option to choose between them on our power bill. Whether they be nuclear, solar, geo-thermal, nano tubes and so on. / / Freedom of choice is what we want. Which is in fact a lyric from that crazy 80’s pop rock band, Devo. / / The red things are the hats Devo alway wear which they call “Energy Domes”, claiming they can actually harvest energy from your own head. / / Now that’s a solution I’d really like to see. / / *This is my first attempt at using Adobe Illustrator so all comments and critiques are very welcome. / / / / /
In the eighties they were the the coolest of the cool. Littering the shelves of toy stores across the country, they were what every kid wanted and every parent was forced to buy. Now though, they are dead. Dead and angry and replaced by newer, more pose-able models. Dead and angry and wanting revenge. They may be five inches tall, but they’re five inches of blood thirsty evil and they’ll bite a big meaty hunk out of neck.

This tee design was inspired by a skill tester machine that I saw in the foyer when I recently went to the movies and the claw scene from the original Matrix film. I hope you enjoy it?
