Farewell but not for forever, just for three exciting weeks while I travel Egypt, see some amazing things and hopefully meet some great characters too. I’ll miss you all but I’m looking forward to a break and a de-stress, and I can’t think of much more relaxing then kicking back cruising down the Nile at sunset. Take care and behave yourselves while I’m gone :P (Yeah Right).

The Pharaoh Returns

Hey Everyone, / I’ve been back a few days from Egypt now, but recovering from a respiratory infection I picked up over there, so been a bit quiet and snowed under at work. I also lost my baggage but have been told I may be receiving it later then week (which is great news). / I had an absolutely fantastic time in Egypt and enjoyed myself to no end, I dressed as a local and wander the streets, ate fantastic food and made lots of new friends and penpals. I didn’t take as many photos as I predicted and that was partially due to me really embracing the holiday and just enjoying myself and the culture first hand rather then behind the lens. I still managed to rattle off over 7000 images and some movies to boot so I’m still importing the full collection onto my PC at home. Last night was my first chance to play with a few shots and I picked my favourite three portraits to share with my RB friends. I hope you all like them and the stories behind the captures. I was keeping a loose log of my adventures and travels so I am considering doing a slow release day by day account, with illustrations to accompany the account. There is a fair bit of work to get it up to scratch, but if there is any interest then I think the photos and stories compliment each other better then just images alone. Well I’m glad to be back, and while I struggle to get on top of my work and into a normal routine please enjoy my three favourite portraits (thus far) from my trip photos. Blue Eyed Stare / Cheeky Grin / Bright Eyes /

21 Days to Go

Hey All, Firstly I want to apologise for talking up my previous weekend of Beautiful goodness and never delivering, but a number of recent events, both in the RB community and around me have taken most of the shine of that story, so in respect I’m just skipping over that for now. I will say that I’m getting damn excited about the trip to Egypt! I have my visa, I have a brand new pack (for my birthday), got lots of cool travelling gear for Xmas and things are starting to get very real. I must admit I’m a little nervous, and the friend I’m meeting in Egypt to tour around with is current trapped in Kenya, so I pray he’ll be able to leave shortly (and safely). I’ve been doing a fair bit of reading, I’ve grown my beard out (its a shaggy mess at the moment). I have a new camera as a backup, a Canon G9, (so I’ve got a foot in both camps now). Its a great little camera for street photography and being a bit more discrete then the D200 and massive lenses attached. Not long to go! I’m hoping to keep a diary while I’m over there, and when I return post a series of illustrated travel stories, thats the intention, if it actually happens will see :) Take care everyone and a Happy New Year!

Egypt Tour next Jan-Feb

I can’t whip the smile of my dial, hehehe! Oh and dont’ forget my discount Fire Sale I’m really excited to share this news but over the last week, my wife has decided to send me on a trip to Egypt for a 15 day tour. One of our friends had mentioned in passing he was going to be doing a Egypt tour alone, and my wife had a brain wave and within a few days had all the flights booked so I’ll be travelling with my mate checking out some great sites which include the Pyramids, Sphinx, Alexandria, Luxor, Kom Ombo, Awan, the Red Sea. I’m pretty excited, a little bit scared, but overal excited at a great opportunity. I’d love to hear from anyone who’s been before, any tips, suggestions etcs While the tour is pretty well defined there are some stages where we can do our own thing. I’ve decided I’m going to have to start some training and get a bit fitter before I go, as I’m sure the heat will knock me around a bit. If you can’t tell I’m almost dancing a jig right now imagining it, I’m sure I’ll have a great time, I really hope I can capture some great photos while I’m there. Thanks everyone and again, check out my sales if you haven’t! Craig

4 Days to Go till Egypt

Well my bags are semi packed, and I’m counting down the days with anxious anticipation. I have a hat, I have two travel towels and a baby face washer (A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitch-hiker can have), sunscreen, insect repellent, various medications for upset stomachs, walking shoes, some well worn thongs, two cameras and a sense of adventure. In the last couple of days I’ve been pouring over my itinerary and various Egypt books, and I’m so excited and so nervous at the same time. The experience should be great, but I always worry before I leave that I’ll go and only take rubbish photos. Last trip I overcompensated by taking 22 thousand, and in the end got maybe 40-50 good shots out of it, I’ve got a far shorter period of time, and being on a organised tour less time of my own for stalking the good shots. I’m also going to be “offline” for a bit over two weeks, usually this would worry me in itself, but this time round I’m not as concerned, and the Internet and everyone will still be there when I get back. Oh and while I’m here, I have some long over due Leica images to share with you all. I’ve been slack recently and haven’t really been uploading as many images as I should (Egypt should fix that, I’ll probably have to cull my portfolio to make some room!) So my last roll of film from the Leica. My personal favourite image. / The Lovely Katie / The Block /

#1: Getting there is Half the Fun

As promised here is the first of many Egypt entries, this one is a tad dull but it will get more exciting Well despite only learning which airline and flight number the morning I flew out. (I’m not details oriented, my wife is the organised one) I managed to board the Etihad Airbus A340-500, in relative ease, with a little sweet talking I also got myself a window seat, which in the end didn’t have anyone next to me which made the flight a little easier. The plane itself was pretty new and the staff efficient if not quite up to Singapore Airline standards. We hit a few pockets of turbulence otherwise it was uneventful. We actually got to watch the approach and landing through their entertainment system on a camera mounted on the nose of the plane- cool yet potentially scary if things weren’t coming down smoothly. / / Patterns in the Sand We landed at 11pm local time but the terminal was still very busy. I lined up for guest transfer to find out my hotel details for the night, due to some confusion where they didn’t actually write down the hotel, the helpful stewards directed me through immigration and outside where I could find another Etihad desk that told me I actually had to be inside the airport on the other side of customs and immigration. Passing security wasn’t too hard however the guy checking my passport wasn’t impressed by my brief 15 minute “stay” in the country. With a few more wrong turns I found the airport hotel and checked in, showered and proceeded to sleep or pretend to sleep for the next 6 hours. Hungry I woke too early for breakfast so killed time in my room before I could eat. Had a light breakfast and then collected me things and went to the waiting lounge. / Abu Dharbi Airport The flight from Abu Dharbi was pleasant I again had a window seat and enjoyed looking down at the world. The sand and water just off the airport were gorgeous with lovely turquoise and aqua coloured water and amazing shapes made by the shifting sand. / / Gorgeous Seas I had a young Kuwaiti boy sitting next to me around 10 years old. He admired my camera and took a few shots, and spent most of the flight up to mischief, scribbling on the tray table, peeling of stickers, and running off to the back of the plane. The specular views continued as we passed roughly over Sinai. Fantastic mountains and even some snow on one lofty peak. / / Rocky Mountain Range Flying into Cario it became apparent that there is a litter problem, the streets were full of rubbish and this was viewing it from the sky. It was very cloudy on the descent and the streets were wet with the results of an earlier downpour. The airport wasn’t too bad, the passport checkers smoked like chimneys billowing in all directions and I was met by a smartly dressed lad that helped me through customs, I was then told to wait while he collected two others, also on my tour. A lovely couple Dean and Shannae from 4 hours inland from Perth, a farmer and a pharmacist on the first leg of a month long trip. We’ll walked a short distance to a mini van which drove us to our hotel Salma Hotel. The hotel is certainly an interesting place, a metal detector is the first thing you see and pass through when you enter, the reception area is cosy and smells of exotic cigarettes. The rooms are small, dark and fairly dingy, but do for the most part look clean, unlike the view out my window. The aircon doesn’t seem to work and the electrics buzz and dim, I take a few minutes to unpack and re-pack my bags, ensuring I have all the required essentials in my day pack. In reception now, sadly my friends from Perth Dean and Shannae can not be found and Dave hasn’t made it to the hotel as yet, so I find myself passing time in the hotel lobby, typing away and observing the many comings and goings in the hotel. Drivers making pickups, guests checking out waiting for cabs, people returning from various adventures mostly wet to various degrees by the rain showers outside. Boredom is starting to set in a little but my sense of self preservation and my sense of adventure are in a hopeless battle together, and so I sit waiting for a friend before I venture further afield. And then I see a sign for an Internet cafe, but I try to resist the urge, it is after all supposed to be a holiday. The lack of sleep and boredom now gang up on me, and I feel perhaps like a nap is in order. More Later for now enjoy a few more pics from the flight. / Clouds over the Desert / A Town and Mountains spring from the Desert / More Mountains

Didn’t sleep well the night before having had a migraine in the middle of the night, I think jet lag and dehydration had both kicked in hard. Woke and met Dave for breakfast, I decided not to risk it and just had the croissants, Dave had the eggs and they didn’t look too bad. After checking what Dean and Shannae where going to do we decided to hit the Cario Museum. The cab ride was an adventure but well worth it, the museum is massive I wasn’t prepare for its immense size, and that pales at the actual size and volume of things on display. Lots of sarcophagus (sarcophagi?) more then I expected (in my head I thought it was only for the super powerful and rich) it actually equates to a lot highly decorated exhibts. A definite highlight was the Jewelry and Tut’s collection, some really amazing pieces, it would of been awesome to see what the full costume would look like back in the day. Sadly no photography in the museum which didn’t stop the occasional muppet. I can’t describe how cool it is, the only down side is there is little to no descriptions on the majority of the stuff which makes putting things into context a little hard sometimes. The animal mummies where another highlight as were the ancient tools, including Egyptian boomerangs. / Washing drys on a Cairo balcony / / Cosy room at the Salma Hotel / View from my Room / / After the museum the next task was to try to cross the road. Not a easy task with the crazy flow of traffic. Dave went first and got across safely, which left me stranded on the side of the road so I had no choice but to commit to a panic’ed dash. After a short walk along the Nile, being asked if we wanted a Felucca ride ever 15 metres we decided to brave the traffic and and visit the Ramese Hilton, this time it took as a little longer to cross but our confidence grew with each street we crossed. (I was a natural by the end of the trip, crossing roads like a local). Felucca moored on the Nile / / Mosque (sorry I don’t remember which) / / Gorgeous turrets of a mosque / / We then had lunch and asked for directions to the Islamic area, another mind boggling cab ride and we were dropped off between four massing mosques. We walked around through lots of alleys lined with tiny shops selling all manner of stuff, with mostly men (few women sellers) trying to convince you to stop and look. Many liked asking what country we were from and we had many canned responses such as G’day Mate, Stone the Flaming Crows, and Flat out like a lizard drinking. / Are we lost Dave ? / / No, But I don’t know where we are! / / A gorgeous window / In the end we did get lured into an apparently 100 year old store that sold perfume / essences. It was a fun experience and in the end after a cup of scolding hot tea, I left with a little bottle of “Cleopatra” . Smelling better then we did before we negotiated a few more crowded, and muddy alleys until we hit a main road and followed it back to the big square where we started. I took the camera out and took a few shots and for the most part was ignored by the locals so my confidence has grown and tomorrow I’ll take the big camera (DSLR) for a spin. / In the perfume shop / / Craig loses focus / / Sunset in Cario / / The cab ride home was probably the tightest we had, with our car 2 millimetres away from over cars on the road, the margin for error was close to zero. We saw a lovely sunset with broken clouds making for some spectacular views sadly the memory card kept filling up so I missed a few awesome shots. When I got in Dean and Shannae took me to the roof the see the last of the sunset and one of the Giza Pyramids visible between the buildings. Awesome!! We then went down for a few drinks before we had the first administrative briefing with our guide Dave. After dinner I had the Egyptian moussaka again (delicious) and then we all went to bed. Sadly I was awake again at 1am and then at 3am and been awake till morning call to pray (which is right next door). / Sorry the story so far isn’t that exciting.

Hey Everyone, Firstly sorry to my watchers, I’ve been trying to help sort out the current activity monitor bug, so I’m sorry if I’ve spammed you a little. / I also need to say I’ve been slack and haven’t given you an Egypt update, but one is coming, hopefully this weekend! In other news I was featured in an interview with Eyal / from the Middle East Art But I failed to acknowledge my wife and her infinite patience, so let me do that now, Katie is great she puts up with photography adventures, modelling when she hates being in front of the camera, and some very long waits for the “perfect light”. So please check out the interview here And to wet your whistle a little here are a few more Egypt images, plenty more to come. Stone Tablet / Saqqara, the Step Pyramid / Signs on the Beach / GiZ Tra Fic / / Windswept / / Let me know if you think any of these are Redbubble portfolio worthy, so far I think not.

Coming Together

Cross posted from my blog The past few weeks have been busy as usual. Work (aka what pays the bills) has been demanding of late, and I’ve been trying to get ready for a photo show that was on Friday. It was one of those things I kept meaning to put out there for everyone and never got around to it except for a bulletin on myspace and a journal entry here on redbubble the night before. The show was great. We had a huge crowd of people through the gallery and the organizers did a great job of putting it together. I had 4 framed prints and 3 of them sold. This is actually a first. So far all my personal sales (not internet) were un-framed prints. So, I won’t be covering my walls in more of my own photos just now! I also sold a few matted prints and I got a ton of positive feedback (mainly from other photographers in the show). I’m still a bit shy about stepping up to the plate when people are looking at my work. And over the remainder of the weekend I rested and I worked on editing the rest of my Egypt photos at last. There are a ton since I’ve last posted a blog. So, please check out my Egypt Gallery to see them all. I’ve said it many times, and I’ll say it one last time, I’m incredibly happy with my decision to go to Egypt. I had heard a lot of people suggesting now was not the time. Maybe it’s not the best time, but it was my time, and I have to say that I had a brilliant time. I don’t know if I will ever see the Nile again, but I would welcome the chance. Egypt is an arid land, but still a place of astounding natural beauty. Two days on the Red Sea were not nearly enough, but sites like this will stay with me for a long time. I took this with my neutral density filter so that I could get a long exposure and really expose the color of the sunset on the Red Sea. The little mountains across the sea are Saudi Arabia. Also on the Sinai peninsula, we visited the oldest monastery, the Monastery of St. Catherine, a holy site for both Christians and Muslims, and a site of pilgrimages since Roman times. We also climbed to the top of Mount Sinai, which as I’ve recorded was incredibly strenuous for me, but so worth it. And on our final day, we visited a 19th century mosque in Cairo. The beauty and details of this place was exquisite. This is only a single image of many I posted of this mosque. I really hope you check out more of them. The carpeting in the Mosque of Mohamed Ali is original 19th century hand woven carpet. I took this with my wide angle fisheye lens. The lighting is what was truly magic to me. I could have sat here for some time. For the moment, I’ve posted all the Egypt photos to Redbubble that I intend to. I probably will post more after I’ve had some time (and feedback) to decide what else I want to make available. But, I FULLY welcome redbubblers taking a look and letting me know what you would like to see here.

Adherent synthesis! Sound, thought, and simple strides to be gentle and delicate responding to God are life’s honors. Probilities come and probabilities go. Time catches a glimpse as it itself is created, observed, or caught in a form. Rapped in papyrus cloth to show bodily structure ( of a pharoah.) Beauty in the lockness darkest depths of the universe is created. Millions & trillions of years away from the knowledge of stars or sight that the universe exists. Judgement of strengths and stature approaches the “Lotus Pillars” of existence’s Heaven. Questioned soulificly (non- verbally) about his attributes and future aspirations of shaping infinity, the universe, and a kingdom of Heaven on ethereal sectors of planets modern day called (ours) Earth, Saturn, Venus, uraeus, Pluto, Neptune, etc. Yet still gravity has not yet existed, and he still roams around as if it doesn’t count for anything ( Heavy energy being around no- gravity. “Boom!, Boom!” (sounds as he walks.) If Earth and the other planets existed they would have shaken almost out of orbit . But they don’t and (existing for a while the element A Mummy”s Strength is becoming time) Time must figure how to coincide gravity, the universe, stars, and planets together in harmony in 1 tune or beat that has 1 soulific infinite rhythm. Befriended by Ethereal’s existence or its skin (epidermis, strips of papyrus cloth physical body not yet created.) One becomes knowledgible of the other, and they find that are 1, in accordance of 1, and an exact ethereal echo of 1 another. And with this love, strength, or ethereal eternal knowledge of one self they began to shape intellect, knowledge, and itself, time (universe.) Furthermore with this dedication or “Mysty Egyptian Blue” feeling they began to create evolution of gravity & non- gravity in tune with the stars and planets. And this becomes the essence of “A Mummy’s Strength.” /

All being well – in a few weeks I will be back in the Egyptian deserts and dropping into Cairo for a week or so – hopefully I will be bringing back some sunshine and unusual desert shots to brighten our days! / Keep safe keep dry – be prepared! / H
