A compilation of my familiar egrets pasted in Photoshop against kind of an angry “fraced” sky, with water added using Flood. In this one I did the egrets reflection in a separate image in Photshop, to see how that would work out. I like the results. The sky was an actual photo that I used Fractilious software to enhance. Snowy Egret. St. Augustine, Florida. Nikon D90 / F/5.6 / ISO 250 / 1/640 sec / 300 mm /
/ Nikon D60~ 55/200 / Mexico Jan/2009 Snowy Egret / Egretta thula / Length: 22 to 26 inches Wingspan: 46 inches Seasonality: Summer / Migrant / ID Keys: Black legs with contrasting yellow feet, black bill, all white plumage The elegant snowy egret was killed by the thousands in the 1800’s for its long, lacy breeding plumage, which was used for women’s hats and other clothing. It has recovered both in range and numbers since that time. Of the white egrets found in South Dakota, the Snowy Egret can be identified by its size (smaller than the Great Egret), it’s yellow feet contrasting with black legs. See the Identification Tips page for differentiating among the white Egrets and Herons in the state. Habitat: Prefers large sloughs or marshes, sometimes edges of ponds or lakes. / Diet: Varies, but includes fish, crustaceans, insects, frogs, lizards, snakes, rodents, snails, and worms. / Behavior: Uses a variety of foraging techniques. They will often actively wade through shallow waters, chasing prey that is startled by the movement. They will also stand still in shallow water, waiting for prey to approach. Snowy Egrets will also forage on dry land, usually in search of insects. / Nesting: June and July / Breeding Map: Breeding bird survey map / Song: Generally silent / Migration: Birds in the interior of the country migrate to U.S. coastal areas, Mexico, and Central America in the fall. / Similar Species: Cattle Egret, Great Egret, immature Little Blue Heron. See Identification Tips for differentiating between these species. / Conservation Status: Expanding range to the north and increasing population in recent decades. Numbers are still far below historical levels, however.
Water color Painting on 140lb Montval paper. / Most of the background of water here was accomplished with wet on wet, adding and moving the colors. The beak was started with a solid orange that settled adding touches of green and I used a wet brush to bring the light spots back out after it was completely dry. Most of the darker areas on the beak were dry brush and then lightly bled. The photo for this painting was taken at Jack London Square in Oakland, CA. As this egret settled in to finding a good spot to fish, he gathered a crowd. We all watched for almost 20 minutes as he caught a days worth of fish. Just enough for lunch, I’m sure he planned to return later that day for the evening show. I’m glad we got front row seating so I could get a few great shots. /

Capture this snowy white egret landing on Venice beach, Florida to go fishing. At one time, the beautiful plumes of the Snowy Egret were in great demand by market hunters as decorations for women’s hats. This reduced the population of the species to dangerously low levels. Now it is protected by law, under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, this bird’s population has rebounded. / Canon 5D mark ll / canon 400mm / ISO 250 / 1/640 f 7.1 CP filter /

FEATURED SEP 2009 ALL COUNTRIES ~ Wetlands, Ponds, Lakes & Rivers We came across this solitary Great Egret during our walk around our neighborhood tonight along a water channel in Hobsons Bay. /
FEATURED OCT 2009 PLAYFUL PHOTOGENIC ANIMALS / FEATURED OCT 2009 THE WOMAN PHOTGRAPHER / Pictured here is a local Great Egret gloriously taking flight. This photo, and all my bird shots are taken right in my “backyard” so to speak- around the immediate surrounds of our home in Hobsons Bay. It had been a day of sorts, with some news arriving that had not been so good. I needed cheering up, and my wonderful husband endured my darkness as we set off for our late afternoon walk with our trusty Taka leading the way around the local waterways.Although I initially felt strange about picking up the camera when so sad, I began to shoot. With each shot I reconnected with our surroundings, with Mick and with Taka, and my sadness began to shift , until this Angel lifted above our heads, and with his glorious whoosh, saved me… from myself. I recall as a young girl, while my Father was still alive, we would share such special moments together pondering. Pondering life, literature, poetry, film, people, nature, feelings, ideas…and birds. Birds he loved for their freedom and grace, and he kept doves because they didn’t have to be “kept”, or caged. They would of course be free to fly, but always knew where home was. We would sit sharing our ideas on our west-facing veranda for sunset, to catch the dusk chorus, which would delight him so much I can still recall clearly how his blue eyes would light up as the birds would “turn it on” for us, as Dad would gently pause our conversation with a distant gaze, and a gentle “hushhh”. I do love to ponder birds. Nikon D70s / Nikon 70-300mm lens / f/4.2 / 1/1250sec / focal length 105mm / Editted to enhance contrast a little in Picasa.

It is based on the texts of two earlier folk songs collected by the Bulgarian writer Lyuben Karavelov and published in Veliko Turnovo in 1878. (ref.:Wik) The first time I heard this song, I was sitting at a late jazz club in Dubrovnik, and it was an instrumental version. For me there is something incredibly organic to this powerful song. There must be literally countless of versions, this one of Tose’s is particularly touching, as the superb youthful vocalist was tragically killed two years ago, and as one writer notes “little did he know the song would become his epitaph.” This is a collage consisting of two of my shots, both superceded by others in the same shoot, (see these below) . I hope you agree these current shots can come together and find a place of their own here in my collection. The egret or heron shown here is one of our locals who has generously swooped over my head on several occasions. This bird represents “The Way” or “The Path” in Chinese symbolism. / *Here are the two shots that beat the two in the Zajdi Zajdi on the day of the shoot
Snowy Egret Posing at Rodeo Beach at Fort Cronkite in the Marin Headlands, California. She gave me some wonderfully contorted looks on this breezy day as her aigrette’s blew in the wind. Looked as if she was voguing on a fashion runway!
