I love this image because it’s a reminder to me that daily life and worship are not separate entities but more like two hands folded in prayer, a prayer that flows like a peaceful melody from sunup to sundown and throughout the night in wonderful continuity and harmony. Church in Avranches, Normandy, France. Picture taken with Sony R1 which is ideal if you forgot your tripod. The camera can be placed on the ground in an angle and the top mounted LCD allows you to check the composition. Can’t beat with a DSLR. Avranches is situated at the southern end of the Cotentin Peninsula on the E40 road connecting Saint-Lô with Brittany and on the rail line between Lison (linking to Caen) and Dol (linking to Rennes). The town was founded on high ground overlooking the dunes and coastal marshes along the bay forming the corner between the peninsulas of the Cotentin and Brittany. From Avranches, it is possible to see the Mont Saint Michel, which was founded by Saint Aubert, Bishop of Avranches in the 8th century. A museum houses the collection of manuscripts of Mont Saint Michel, deposited in the municipal archives during the French Revolution. It is one of the largest collections of medieval illuminated manuscripts in France, outside national and university libraries. Formerly dominated by the cathedral, where Henry II did penance, an open grassed area La Plate-Forme overlooking the bay towards Mont Saint Michel displays only a few remnants of the destroyed building. The major church Notre Dame des Champs was constructed in Gothic Revival style in the 19th century to restore the religious life of the town after the destruction of the cathedral. A smaller church Saint Gervais houses a treasury, best known for the purported skull of Saint Aubert complete with hole where the archangel Michael’s finger pierced it (probably a prehistoric trepanned skull). The botanical gardens were founded in the grounds of the former Franciscan convent in the late 18th century. The expansion and introduction of exotic species in the 19th century and the location of the gardens overlooking the bay made the gardens an important sight in the town. / / / / Have a look at my other photos. we were lucky enough to go up to the mezzanine floor at the church in Magné a town in the lovely Marais Poitevin region of the Poitou CharenteI love the round windows in churches (I love all stained glass but the round window always seems to be where I focus my attention!) I am hoping this angle works – if not please do say as I have another but didn’t want to upload 2 that were so similar…. 16th century Church….. taken with Canon 350d standard lens on P program without flash – I have no idea re. iso and shutter speed as I constantly change to suit the light!!

Trying to capture as much as possible of the structure but there is a limit to one’s lens capacitiy… Mont Saint-Michel (English: St Michael’s Mount) is a rocky tidal island in Normandy, France. It is located approximately one kilometer off the country’s north coast, at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches. / Mont Saint-Michel was previously connected to the mainland via a thin natural land bridge, which before modernization was covered at high tide and revealed at low tide. Thus, Mont Saint-Michel has been compromised by several developments. Over the centuries, the coastal flats have been polderised to create pasture. Thus the distance between the shore and the south coast of Mont-Saint-Michel has decreased. The Couesnon River has been canalised, reducing the flow of water and thereby encouraging a silting-up of the bay. In 1879, the land bridge was fortified into a true causeway. This prevented the tide from scouring the silt round the mount. On 16 June 2006, the French prime minister and regional authorities announced a €164 million project (Projet Mont-Saint-Michel) to build a hydraulic dam that will help remove the accumulated silt and make Mont Saint-Michel an island again. It is expected to be completed by 2012. Mont Saint-Michel was used in the sixth and seventh centuries as an Armorican stronghold of Romano-Breton culture and power, until it was ransacked by the Franks, thus ending the trans-channel culture that had stood since the departure of the Romans in AD 460. Before the construction of the first monastic establishment in the 8th century, the island was called Mont Tombe. According to legend, the archangel Michael appeared to St. Aubert, bishop of Avranches, in 708 and instructed him to build a church on the rocky islet. Aubert repeatedly ignored the angel’s instruction, until Michael burned a hole in the bishop’s skull with his finger. The mount gained strategic significance in 933 when William “Long Sword”, William I, Duke of Normandy, annexed the Cotentin Peninsula, definitively placing the mount in Normandy. It is depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry, which commemorates the 1066 Norman conquest of England. Ducal patronage financed the spectacular Norman architecture of the abbey in subsequent centuries. In 1067, the monastery of Mont Saint-Michel gave its support to duke William of Normandy in his claim to the throne of England. It was rewarded with properties and grounds on the English side of the Channel, including a small island located at the west of Cornwall, which, modelled after the Mount, became a Norman priory named St Michael’s Mount of Penzance. During the Hundred Years’ War the English made repeated assaults on the island but were unable to seize it, partly because of the abbey’s improved fortifications. Les Michelettes, two wrought-iron bombards left by the English in their failed 1423–24 siege of Mont Saint-Michel, are still displayed near the outer defense wall. The wealth and influence of the abbey extended to many daughter foundations, including St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall. However, its popularity and prestige as a centre of pilgrimage waned with the Reformation, and by the time of the French Revolution there were scarcely any monks in residence. The abbey was closed and converted into a prison, initially to hold clerical opponents of the republican régime. High-profile political prisoners followed, but by 1836 influential figures, including Victor Hugo, had launched a campaign to restore what was seen as a national architectural treasure. The prison was finally closed in 1863, and the mount was declared a historic monument in 1874. The Mont Saint-Michel and its bay were added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979, as they rank very high on such World Heritage Site criteria as cultural, historical, and architectural significance, as well as human-created and natural beauty. / / Have a look at my other photos. La basilique Saint-Jean-Baptiste est le principal édifice religieux de la ville de Chaumont. De style gothique, elle domine avec ses deux tours la partie la plus ancienne de la commune, située en bordure Nord-Ouest du plateau chaumontois. / L’église a été construite au début du XIIIe siècle, pour répondre aux besoins d’une population grandissante. Elle a rapidement bénéficié de nombreuses donations, notamment de la part des baillis de Chaumont. Elle est érigée en collégiale le 18 décembre 1474 par le pape Sixte IV. D’importants travaux sont engagés à partir de l’année 1517 jusqu’en 1543, l’édifice étant richement décoré au XVIIIe siècle. / La façade orientée à l’Ouest et la nef datent du XIIIe siècle, l’entrée s’effectuant par le portail Saint-Jean situé au sud et typique du style gothique du XIVe siècle. Le chœur et le transept datent des XVe siècle et XVIe siècle. L’Eglise de Saint Pierre et Saint Paul, situated at Evaux les bains which is just in the Creuse on the Limousin / Auvergne border in the “Pays de Combraille” an area of cattle breeders and farmers. A very old town with more than 2000 years of history dating back to the Celts and the Romans. Evaux-les-Bains is not only the only spa town in the Creuse but also the sole in the Limousin. It takes its name from the Celtic word “ivos” used to describe the days of fast in the Celtic calendar. The actual hot water springs of Evaux les Bains are more than 350 million years old and are naturally between 40 and 60 degrees.
