Yes, before you say it … strange! :-) As of July 2009, this painting has had 5,048 viewings and has been favourited 79 times and had 194 comments, so I guess someone out there likes it. Many thanks for your enthusiasm. To be candid though, I’ll never cease to be amazed at its reception, as I didn’t spend too much time on it and even kept it out of my portfolio for ages as I thought it was sub-standard. PLEASE NOTE – AS THE PROPORTIONS OF THIS ARE NOT IN LINE WITH THE PRINTING REQUIREMENTS, IT IS NO LONGER FOR SALE FEATURED BY SURREALISM GROUP – 28th July 2008 FEATURED BY YOU’RE ACCEPTED GROUP – 11th November 2008 FEATURED BY BRITISH PAINTERS GROUP – 26th June 2009 FEATURED BY UNIVERSAL INNOVATION GROUP – 3rd August 2009 I continued this theme and did two more paintings: /
Over a hundred years ago, Blyth had a lot of windmills. I did this stylised one from a black and white photo of a 19th century pencil drawing. I like working like that – it gives my imagination plenty to play with.
The Glencoe Lochan is always a beautiful tranquil spot. This image was taken during Easter when the daffodils were open, which add a splash of colour in the foreground before your eyes are drawn down the length of the Lochan.
When I was visiting relatives in Wrexham (North Wales), I spotted a stone head on the lawn near the library. It was decorated with mosaic. As I try not to plagiarise, I decided to draw the outline of the head and then draw it as though it was built with stones, sort of dry-wall style. As of September 2009 this has been favourited 37 times and featured 4 tiems, so I guess someone out there likes it :) I am now offering this for sale as view cards. Here is the photo I used for this drawing (I took it myself so there are no copyright issues) and I ask you to consider whether I do straight copies or, as I believe, I add some of my own style to the finished picture. My hometown isn’t the most picturesque of places, but it does have a lighthouse that was built in the 18th century. The river was made deeper and narrower over the years and so the lighthouse is now inland. I have painted and drawn it before (as has L.S. Lowry) but decided to liven it up a little in this whimsically bent coloured pencil depiction of it. Here is a more conventional drawing I did of the same lighthouse: FEATURED BY EAT SLEEP DRAW GROUP – 26th September 2009
TOBY AND TABATHA IN THE TINY CITY Toby and Tabatha were taking an early morning walk one summer’s day, when they chanced upon a tiny city, built on the outskirts of their town. While Tabatha peered over one of the castellated walls of the city, Toby leaped over it and sat happily on a cobbled street to gather his thoughts for while. The two cats felt they had been transported into another era. The few people they saw on the street were tiny and dressed in Victorian costume. A soldier courageously stood guard close to where Toby sat. Slightly past the soldier, a well-dressed lady had stopped for a moment, apparently lost in thought. Neither of the characters appeared to be in the least perturbed by Toby and Tabatha, which puzzled the two friends. Of course, what you may have guessed, but they have yet to work out, is that our two feline friends had wandered into the town’s brand new model village; not yet open to the public. Won’t Toby and Tabatha get a surprise when Mr. Grimshaw the Park Attendant arrives at nine o’clock to start his day’s work? They will actually get a big shock when they discover that Mr. Grimshaw, a grumpy man at the best of times, has an intense dislike of cats, however cute and fluffy they may be …. And then with a thud to the back of my head came blackness. / Waking to find myself face down on the floor, I could hear the grating wheeze of the dogs laughter and the tinkling of broken glass falling from my back as I rose to my knees. I rubbed a tender spot at the base of my skull, and then my eyes. / Through a haze of dust and feathers the scene before me gradually came into focus. The frenzied attack on my host continued, and it was clear that despite his bravery, his efforts to fend of the relentless beasts had become futile. / However, at the very same moment his eyes had suggested a man resigned to his fate, with a swipe of his glove he was able to buy himself enough time to reach into his overcoat and pull out a large shiny object which he tossed into the air. / The object – a medal of the grandest order- fell at the feet of the sniggering hound. The dog looked down at the prize and breathed out a deep sigh of smug satisfaction. “Well…” gurgled his battle worn master, by now at the limits of his patience: / “DON’T JUST STAND THERE LIKE AN OVER GROWN FRICKIN GOOFBALL…D-O-O-O SOMETHING!!!!!”

I couldn’t resist poking a bit of fun. Vampires are a great mystical creature, and individual undead like Dracula, Louis, Lestat have impressive fan followings. Heck who doesn’t enjoy a good Vanhelsing inspired tale? But even vampires in the Buffy series and these others all have something in common. They aren’t wearing glitter!

Many artists like art to be serious and meaningful, which is fine by me, but hey, I think the world is big enough to have fun art as well as serious art. This is based on a fluffy toy, but I changed the colours of his scarf, added stripes and gave him stripes too. I used coloured pencils and fineliner pens for this. Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit obviously influenced the manufacturers of this fluffy toy and I was probably think of him when I redesigned the scarf :) And here is the esteemed model himself: FEATURED BY FINE ARTS INFLUENCED BY LITERATURE GROUP – 11th October 2009 FEATURED BY RABBIT, RABBIT GROUP – 11th October 2009 FEATURED BY FIRST THINGS GROUP – 11th October 2009 / FEATURED BY ART AND STORIES MADE FOR CHILDREN – 15th October 2009 / FEATURED BY DIMENSIONS GROUP – 25th October 2009 / I wish to thank Peter the rabbit for being such an inspiration.
