  • Creating Your Own Website

One or two folks have asked me about how they can get their own website up and running. As I designed my own site (photogenique) and know a little bit about the ‘mechanics’ of getting a website going, I thought I would expand those answers and BLOG it for everyone. If you want a web site you need these three basic things: A - someone to design it (the Techy bit) / / B - a domain name (ie. www.mygreatpics.com). / / C - a company who you pay to allow you to keep your website on their ‘host’ computer. It’s called hosting the website. Bearing all this in mind there are two routes to go to achieve this. ROUTE 1 – (THE FREEBY ROUTE) – the easiest and cheapest route is build a website via one of the freeby on-line options. To give you an idea of what this involves, have a look at FREEWEBS.COM. It is an online system for creating your own website using ready made templates. It is an excellent way of getting a good website up and running without worrying about technicalities. If you can use the WWW, you can build a website. additional Bubbler comments and notes…........ – Can I recommend NameCheap.com for domains and Site5.com for hosting? I’ve been using both for years and years and they both have a very stable service ~ Faizan Qureshi. – You can also do it on a mac with its own built in software ~ Charlene Aycock. – I really recommend squarespace.com for those who are reasonably good with computers but can’t be bothered spending a lot of time building a website and want to be able to udpate it quickly ~ Natalie Manuel The Freeby route will achieve A,B & C above fairly painlessly, and importantly, cheaply. HOWEVER – I do not know any of these freeby routes which will give you a fancy website domain name like www.mygreatpics.com. Usually, the web address would end up being something like: http://www.freewebs.com/mygreatpics Not bad, not fancy – but very functional. If you do want your own fancy domain name like, www.mygreatpics.com, you may need to go down…..... ROUTE-2 – (THE SLIGHTLY MORE PROFESSIONAL ROUTE) A - designing your website can be a bit more difficult. You either do it yourself, or get someone to do it for you, which can be expensive. If you want to DIY it, then there are a number of software options (web editors) which allow you to create a website without knowing HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) code. Two of the most popular are MicroSoft’s Frontpage or Adobe Dreamweaver (Goggle “Web authoring software” for lots more). It’s a similar process to the freeby option above, just not on-line. Alternatively you can learn HTML – it’s not ‘real’ programming, more like putting a set of fairly straightforward instructions together – and create websites that way. It’s the way I do it. There are lots of very good on-line HTML Tutors, and lots of good books you can get from the library. B & C - Hosting is relatively cheap and hosting companies can often take care of the domain registration as well, which is quite convenient. To find out whether someone already has bought the Domain Name you would like, you can go to a number of websites to check. Here’s one: http://www.skymarket.co.uk On their HomePage, on the left hand side, where it says DOMAIN SEARCH, you type in the name you want (ie – mygreatpics) and it will tell you which variations (.com .net .co.uk etc.) are taken and which are available. Although Skymarket is a UK company, it searches globally, and there will be similar companies in other countries and a quick GOOGLE should reveal them. / / Shop around for hosting prices as there will be large variations depending upon how much webspace (in MegaBytes) that you need, and if it is going to be a photographic website, you are likely going to need quite a few MegaBytes. But there is no rush as you don’t have a website yet! Whether you choose ROUTE-1 or ROUTE-2, you will need to think about how you want your website to look and what you want to achieve with it. One advantage of being in Red Bubble, is that you can use your website to market your art, and use RB as your ‘shop’ by directing potential customers to RB if they want to buy anything. See my photogenique Shop Page to see what I mean. I hope this is useful, and if anyone has anything to add, or useful tips, or spots any errors above, please let me know and I’ll add them to this Blog so it becomes a useful resource for everyone. If you have a question, or if something is not clear, let me know. Either BubbleMail or my email address is: davepeddie@googlemail.com cheers Dave

Somehow … I think I’ve done well. 3 weeks ago I sent out several emails to newspapers in my area letting them know of my photographic skills and available services. Within 10 minutes, I was contacted by the Editor of the newspaper … in my town. As of today … I’ve had 10 photographs printed in the newspaper … including a scoop concerning a recent AFL draft. This is a totally new area of photography for me, being journalistic and sports. I have so much to learn but I am enjoying it immensely. If that’s how you spell it. Who cares … it’s still fabulous! :) life is good x x x

I just sent this out in a bubblemail to all the members of Selective Coloring, but I wanted to also post in in the journals, so that nobody mises it. I am excited to share a few things with you. I have wanted to find a way to showcase the beautiful art from The Selective Coloring Group on my website at: www.selectivecolors.com. And Chris Seabrooke had an awesome tip in the forums where he had a flash widget slideshow that can be added to websites and blogs. So I now have a flash slideshow on the homepage to show off the incredibly gorgeous art from our group. I did not select which images are in the slideshow. I think it may only show the most recent images only, so keep on posting. Also, when you click on the image, it will bring you back to the same image on red bubble. So, it’s a nice little feature that helps the members get some well deserved exposure. Also, I have added a new photo editor, so you can edit your photos right at: www.selectivecolors.com. Go to: Edit Your Photos:.http://www.selectivecolors.com/edityourownphotos.htm This is by FlauntR. It has tons of amazing features, and once you edit your photos, it automatically saves your image, so you can go back to it. You can also import and share at: Flicker, Facebook, Myspace, Picassa, Bebo, FlauntR, Word Press, My Journal, My Yearbook, Type Pad, IGoogle, Xanga, Net Vibes, Word Press, Vox, and more. You can also get html and save to your website, gallery, or other website, send in email, email you images to the web. YOu can also send the image as wall paper right to your mocile phone. Some editing features include: Resize, rotate, Crop -Color, hue, exposure / -Red Eye Removal / -Effects: Sepia, blur, emboss, Boost, grayscale, solarize, soften, sharpen, monochrome / -Mosaic / -edit curves / _Night Vision, Infrared, Vignette, lomo / -Pixelate, posterize, grain / -Color: Cross Process, Duo Tones, heat map, blue tint, green tint, red tint, invert color, black and white, Warhol, edge contrast, balance, shift, neon, emboss / -Sketch / -add and edit stamps, shapes / -Add and edit text / -you can also create and share slideshows. / -Another awesome feature is PiasR: you can choose from 100s of famous paintings and instantly blend the look right into your own photo. I’m not sure if I missed anything, but it is a great, fun, and very useful feature. I’ve been tinkering with it for hours. “So come and join me at: www.selectivecolors.com. All you have to use the flauntR editord is register. It’s quick … just fill in your email, and password, and you are ready to go.Let me know what you think of the photo editor and the selective Coloring slideshow. Also feel free to sign up for site updates and news. I hope you enjoy. For all other Red Bubblers, stop on by Selective Colors. / and feel free to use the photo editor for your art or any of the other useful resources. If you have selective colored photography of your own and have not yet signed up for our group, you can sign up here. It’s a fun and inspiring group. No, not me! I’ve been here for some time now. And, come to think of it, he isn’t here and that isn’t what I meant. I mean, I’ve heard from him, more than once in the same day. Probably you won’t have heard of him, yet, but I assure you that you shall for, not only is he Founder of some of the most inspirational moments in my literary life, but, he is darned tootin’ fine on a page all to himself. Anyway, I’m truly happy to have heard from him as .. now that I’ve been spoiled by writing with him as co-author, at times, and as impromptu editor, writing without him is just not as interesting of a journey as it used to be. Well, I can still do it, and there are still moments, but not quite so many moments. He helps me break into that world even through pain and sickness. Which, otherwise, I have to wait until some of the gremlins of the world have taken the day off and my immune system has finally reported for duty. Christopher Augustus Robin Augles Stonehenge Stone, I missed you!

  • Camera RAW / Editor and Compression

Shooting in RAW definitely has it’s advantages both technically and creatively. Technically – image quality is paramount the dynamic range surpasses JPEG. / Compression – using RAW is uncompressed. This means in post-production you are getting the highest possible quality with your shots. Every time you save a jpeg, the file is recompressed. Each compression degrades quality. The colour /detail range – to show detail in shadows is there if the shot is taken correctly and can often be fixed / retrieved in most cases. For example under / over exposed. However if the information just isn’t – it cannot be retrieved. If you are unable to shoot in RAW as most compact digitals can’t, shoot in jpeg and if you want the best quality either cash-up and buy a DLSR or save the shots in Photoshop as PSDs. However PSDs are large files and will clog up HDD space, esp if you don’t have much. When post processing in Photoshop, make sure you have the latest RAW Plug-in if you can’t get it, download the DNG Converter from Adobe’s website. As the newer cameras will more than likely not be supported in older versions of Photoshop, Lightroom or Elements. Creatively – there are a lot effects you can get just from using the RAW Editor. Using the channel mixers, vignetting, saturation, tint, temperature, shadow, exposure. / Effects such as black and whites, 70s wash, although I haven’t done a sepia – I’m sure it’s possible. If you want to do more, save the file as a PSD, not JPEG. Maintain the maximum image quality as compressing the file will deteriorate the quality, esp enlargement prints. Noise grain can be artistic it can also look really bad, too. Esp from low light shots taken with high ISO (although not a problem with higher end gear). Even with the flash, my experience is that most older DSLR Cameras are noisy and so do Compact Digitals – this may not become problem as technology develops. There are so many different effects you can get from experimenting – faking it. Polaroid, TTV (Through The Viewfinder), aged, warping, softening, montages, etc. Once you have your PSD, experiment with textures, blending modes and limited filters. As I don’t personally use a lot of them – ‘cheap’ and easy effects that are either over-used or used too much or too badly. BOO. I use levels, lots of overlays – including the same image in different colour sets and textures (from CG Textures , blurring, blending modes, paint brushes, saturation levels (can be done in the RAW Editor). Experiment. So if you’ve got the space (HDD and Memory Cards) shoot in RAW, much better long-term and better image quality. Different manufacturers have their own branded RAW. Adobe have DNG (Digital Negative) which works the same as a RAW image in the RAW editor. I personally convert my CR2 files from my Canon DSLR to DNG as Photoshop CS2 does not support them. CS3 however does. This is because Adobe only update the RAW Editor to a certain point /series of camera – so convert or upgrade, you decide which is better for your situation. RAW files are larger than jpegs, so you need sufficient space to store them, esp if you’re doing a lot of shooting – weddings, events, etc. Workflow speeds are dependant on hardware. External drives – transport BUS – Firewire 800 vs USB 2.0 vs Esata, Optical. RAM, Internal HDDs, CPU clock speeds, multiple CPUs, Video Card, Screen – on screen colour reproduction accuracy with prints -this is also affected by lighting in work environment. For any further questions about this topic, email me: damienwoods84@yahoo.com.au and I’ll get back to you ASAP.

Well, we’re up and running. Mock the Flock that is. An arts mag for those amongst us in this part of rural England who do not agree that a year in the life of one farmer and his tractor holds special appeal (and believe you me, many do around here – the DVD is a sell out!!!) So with that in mind, we decided to start our own contemporary arts mag – mocking the flock if you know what I mean (and I’m sure you do). Amazing the number of artists , writers and musicians in this area who feel the same. The first edition is out now, as is the website (www.mocktheflock.co.uk) and who knows what will come of it. We would like it to be a springboard for arty events, exhibitions and even the building of a new art centre around here – which would be terrific. I’m sure many other rural communities are the same, but when you think that Country Life (that bastion of rural conservative living!) put Louth as the fourth most desirable place to live in the country (really? – well, apparently its so), we should have something for everyone – including all of those under 65 – and there are certainly a lot of those. Any of you reading this ramble who live in the vicinity – buy it and contribute to it. The rest of you – I’d still like to know what you think and any further suggestions. I am now off on my hols with the kiddie-winks . T wo weeks in the sun to restore my nerves with cheap plonk and paella. Love to all. Jayne

I have often wondered when it is time to remove the word “Amateur” from Freelance Photographer. I am continuously learning new ways of making photos more appealing and new ideas for editing with Photoshop. I just want to be the best photographer that I can be. I have been taking pictures for the family and friends since I was in high school then for the boss at the places I worked in the USA and overseas, now I am taking them with a lot higher quality equipment than I did years ago. I am still learning so will hold on to the “Amateur” title for a little longer. / I do not like using the flash to get a picture, using natural light is my choice. I hope everyone will feel free to critique my work.
