  • I love this painting, I’m selling the canvas version at the Verve Cafe from tonight till the 1st of August. The Cafe is on 109 Edward St {brisbane}, / Its funny how I’m trying to be an artist but I’m very sad when I sell work I really like, so I hope it sells & I’ll wear this shirt to keep it close to me. This is a painting of Carine Roitfeld she is a fashion icon & the editor of the French Vouge.

One or two folks have asked me about how they can get their own website up and running. As I designed my own site (photogenique) and know a little bit about the ‘mechanics’ of getting a website going, I thought I would expand those answers and BLOG it for everyone. If you want a web site you need these three basic things: A - someone to design it (the Techy bit) / / B - a domain name (ie. www.mygreatpics.com). / / C - a company who you pay to allow you to keep your website on their ‘host’ computer. It’s called hosting the website. Bearing all this in mind there are two routes to go to achieve this. ROUTE 1 – (THE FREEBY ROUTE) – the easiest and cheapest route is build a website via one of the freeby on-line options. To give you an idea of what this involves, have a look at FREEWEBS.COM. It is an online system for creating your own website using ready made templates. It is an excellent way of getting a good website up and running without worrying about technicalities. If you can use the WWW, you can build a website. additional Bubbler comments and notes…........ – Can I recommend NameCheap.com for domains and Site5.com for hosting? I’ve been using both for years and years and they both have a very stable service ~ Faizan Qureshi. – You can also do it on a mac with its own built in software ~ Charlene Aycock. – I really recommend squarespace.com for those who are reasonably good with computers but can’t be bothered spending a lot of time building a website and want to be able to udpate it quickly ~ Natalie Manuel The Freeby route will achieve A,B & C above fairly painlessly, and importantly, cheaply. HOWEVER – I do not know any of these freeby routes which will give you a fancy website domain name like www.mygreatpics.com. Usually, the web address would end up being something like: http://www.freewebs.com/mygreatpics Not bad, not fancy – but very functional. If you do want your own fancy domain name like, www.mygreatpics.com, you may need to go down…..... ROUTE-2 – (THE SLIGHTLY MORE PROFESSIONAL ROUTE) A - designing your website can be a bit more difficult. You either do it yourself, or get someone to do it for you, which can be expensive. If you want to DIY it, then there are a number of software options (web editors) which allow you to create a website without knowing HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) code. Two of the most popular are MicroSoft’s Frontpage or Adobe Dreamweaver (Goggle “Web authoring software” for lots more). It’s a similar process to the freeby option above, just not on-line. Alternatively you can learn HTML – it’s not ‘real’ programming, more like putting a set of fairly straightforward instructions together – and create websites that way. It’s the way I do it. There are lots of very good on-line HTML Tutors, and lots of good books you can get from the library. B & C - Hosting is relatively cheap and hosting companies can often take care of the domain registration as well, which is quite convenient. To find out whether someone already has bought the Domain Name you would like, you can go to a number of websites to check. Here’s one: http://www.skymarket.co.uk On their HomePage, on the left hand side, where it says DOMAIN SEARCH, you type in the name you want (ie – mygreatpics) and it will tell you which variations (.com .net .co.uk etc.) are taken and which are available. Although Skymarket is a UK company, it searches globally, and there will be similar companies in other countries and a quick GOOGLE should reveal them. / / Shop around for hosting prices as there will be large variations depending upon how much webspace (in MegaBytes) that you need, and if it is going to be a photographic website, you are likely going to need quite a few MegaBytes. But there is no rush as you don’t have a website yet! Whether you choose ROUTE-1 or ROUTE-2, you will need to think about how you want your website to look and what you want to achieve with it. One advantage of being in Red Bubble, is that you can use your website to market your art, and use RB as your ‘shop’ by directing potential customers to RB if they want to buy anything. See my photogenique Shop Page to see what I mean. I hope this is useful, and if anyone has anything to add, or useful tips, or spots any errors above, please let me know and I’ll add them to this Blog so it becomes a useful resource for everyone. If you have a question, or if something is not clear, let me know. Either BubbleMail or my email address is: davepeddie@googlemail.com cheers Dave

  • Well, I am so excited I have self-taught myself to do yet another thingy on the computer – LOL ;) / Windows Movie Maker gave me a run for my money (or lack there of) but I managed to get all of the digitally edited, remastered and altered artwork since I learned in July how to do that and it is now all together (like here) in one youtube video, put to music by Tomas Walker’s Native American flute, called SOARING it is almost 9 minutes long and also my first youtube video presentation too. / The shot here is a hawk flying overhead that I edited with Redfield Plug-in Fractilius. / Thanks for checking out the video and this ;)

Often enough I find people asking for editing help that can’t afford or don’t want to download editing tools – not even free ones, for their own reasons. I’ve spent some time checking out the online tools selection (Jo posted a listing of ten of these tools a while back). I didn’t use most of them, but looked them over, grabbed a screenshot and linked them all on a page in my blog. Besides photo editors, there are art pads and 3D avatars. I created myself one. This is “me” (minus some wrinkles and a few bulges) from the Meez site: Also on the list is one download tool that includes a community, BUT at this point in time, it’s only for mac users. Look near the bottom of the post for “Skitch”. Anyhow, here’s the list – all pretty with pics and links. Online Photo Editors and Art Tools On the list are the following: 14 Online Image editors 3 online art pads 3 online tools for adding bling 2 online tools for creating 3D avatars 2 online tools for funky text 1 download tool and online community for mac users.

The following applications are free: / .. / G.I.M.P. The GNU Image Manipulation Program has a lot of the features found on high-end commercial photo editors such as Adobe’s Photoshop. It’s perhaps the best and most featured of the free image editors available, and as such will enable many artists on a budget to reach their potential. It’s FREE, people! / .. / Paint.NET A good basic image editor. Stable (at least on my systems). REQUIRES .NET Framework. (read the requirements) / .. / RealWorld Paint.COM A very basic, but competent editor. They have paid apps too. / .. / IrfanView “IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x, ME, NT, 2000, XP, 2003 , 2008, Vista, Windows 7.” As recommended by RB’er Frisson . Thank you. / .. / Blender Blender is the free open source 3D content creation suite, available for all major operating systems under the GNU General Public License. I haven’t tried it, but I know others who do use it. Get into 3D for free. / .. / Free AAA 8bf plugins Photoshop plugins that are well worth a look. Created by a fellow named Jim Clatfelter. He has a ‘buzzer’ which renders painterly effects on images. / .. / About.com’s Top 10 Free Photo Editors for Windows Check ‘em out, folks. There are some there I didn’t think of. (see also this list at Basic-Digital-Photography.com Paid applications worth a look: / .. / Topaz Simplify Plugin at this writing it’s $39.99 I tried the trial and it’s on my list of wanna haves. Topaz Simplify is a Photoshop plugin. Topaz sort of fills the gap left by the demise of BuzzSimplifier (see below). / .. / NeatImage Noise filtration software available as photoshop plugins or a standalone application. I have the pro version of the standalone application which, when I bought it several years ago was around $89. It is perhaps the state of the art noise reduction software available. They did have a fully functional free version of the standalone which was prohibited by licensing requirements from being used for any commercial uses (read for sale images). It was fully functional. If you sell your work, you must pay and register. / .. / Terragen Terragen is a 3d landscape generator capable of stunningly beautiful output. Like most 3d apps, it has a learning curve. From the website: “You are required to register your copy of Terragen if it is for commercial use, as specified in the License Agreement presented to you when you install or first use Terragen. If you only intend to use Terragen personally, on a non-profit basis, registration is optional and you may continue to use the unregistered version of Terragen free of charge.” Registration for Terragen Classic is $100. Still a lot less than Bryce, Hexagon, etc., which are high-end commercial apps. / .. / Other informational or service related sites: / .. / PlugsNPixels “where you can get one-stop, organized information about creativity and productivity software and related educational materials more quickly and easily than from any other source.” -quote from the site. / .. / MyFreeCopyright A copyright registration site that gives you a digital fingerprint of your work so you can prove infringement if it occurs. I don’t use this service, but I see it being used by others here on RB and elsewhere. Check it out and make up your mind. / .. / A couple of sites added by RB’er Syd Baker / .. / So sad, here are some very good things we have lost: / .. / optikVerve virtualPhotographer plug-in formerly at www.optikvervelabs.com this was a really ‘neato’ photoshop plugin and it was free. If anyone finds that this has been picked up (legitimately) by another vendor, let me know (no warez links, please!) / .. / Buzz Simplifier What a loss that Fo2Pix is out of business! I wanted this one and never ‘got around’ to buying it – my procrastination has cost me so much over the years…..(sighs…)

  • As I chased around dragonflies near our ponds, this little garter snake surprised me, hanging about in the lily leaves. As we approach the Autumnal Equinox on Tuesday, the snake reminded me of the healing power of the West/Fall manifesting through shedding its skin. A snake does not remove one skin, then vulnerably search out another. The new, pure skin grows beneath the old. What is released is outgrown and useless. If it were not released, it would impair the healthy functioning of the new skin. / The future offers the opportunity for purity and healing through the shedding of skin, as long as you don’t let your new skin grow back to resemble the old… I have been working on the newest installment of Mind Soundtracks for EarthMonster Illustrated and harvesting a bounty of heARTworks found here on RB from my colleagues and the subject matter is along these same lines of releasing the old for new and better change. Hope you check it out for October release and even better, maybe join the group here too – EMI Waiting on the world to change John Mayer
