  • Doorbell in Edinburgh, Scotland

  • “Did you say lunch was ready” / When we arrived this polar bear was having a good game with his stick, half a tree actually, and at times it looked as if he was using it to hide behind. After a little patience it dropped the stick and looked at me just as I clicked. I then made a hasty retreat just in case he thought I was dinner.

  • The Forth Rail Bridge at Dusk. The 2.5 km. (1.5 mile) Forth Railway Bridge, the world’s first major steel bridge, with its gigantic girder spans of 521 m. (1710 ft.) ranks as one of the great feats of civilization. It was begun in 1883 and formally completed on 4 March 1890 when HRH Edward Prince of Wales tapped into place a ‘golden’ rivet. Each of the 110 m. (361 ft.) high double-cantilevers is supported on well-founded granite faced piers. The bridge’s construction involved the employment of 4,000 men at times, the use of 54,000 tonnes of steel and driving 6,500,000 rivets. Its total cost was £3,200,000 (~£235,000,000 today). 57 men lost their lives during the building of the bridge and today it is a World Heritage Site.

  • A shot of Edinburgh Castle from the West End of Princes Street. This view lets you see part of the formidable rock upon which it stands. Edinburgh Castle dominates the city of Edinburgh like no other castle in Scotland, and Edinburgh Castle is unequalled in the whole of the British Isles. Over one thousand years of history sit on top of the famous Edinburgh rock. Three bracketed JPGs converted to HDR in Photomatix. BEST VIEWED LARGER Related shots can be found at: Edinburgh.

  • This was taken on the 27th of October 2008 at Duddingston Loch, the foot of Arthurs Seat in Edinburgh. It was a lovely evening but as I was out shopping with my wife, Donna, I only had a few mins to rattle a few shots off before I lost the light.

  • Edinburgh at night. Looking west towards the castle. 100 iso; / 28mm; / f22; / 30 seconds. Three images stuck together.

  • Arthurs Seat – Edinburgh, Scotland. Arthur’s Seat is the main peak of the group of hills which form most of Holyrood Park, a remarkably wild piece of highland landscape in the centre of the city of Edinburgh.

  • Cliftonhall Bridge from the West – Edinburgh’s Union Canal I though this looked more effective in sepia tones (I have just started playing about with different colourings to see what works best). Featured in the Anything Edinburgh Group on 11th March 2009

  • Edinburgh is a beautiful city and life can be very good. It is one of the major Banking and Financial capitols of the world. The National Gallery of Scotland, just behind the sleeping figure, is testament to the fact that the arts and culture are alive and well in this lovely city, but as in every city, there are the misplaced and unfortunate souls who find that there is no place for them and are forced to live out their lives on the streets. Spare a moment, and if you can, spare a little cash to help those less fortunate than ourselves, for there, but for the grace of God, go we all … Taken at The Mound during the very enjoyable redbubble meet in Edinburgh, Scotland on 26th April 09. It was a great day out with a bunch of very talented photographers. For a tighter view of the sleeper, have a look at Beauty Sleep, an excellent image from Rachael Macleod. Check out Rachael’s work, you will not be disappointed. Camera: Canon EOS 450D (Digital Rebel XSi in the USA) BEST VIEWED LARGER Three bracketed JPGs converted to HDR in Photomatix. • The shoreline at Portobello beach, just outside of Edinburgh, Scotland. Having grown up by the sea in the far North of Scotland I have always felt drawn to the coast. Taken in monochrome with Canon 450D & Tamron 70-300mm Lens. All profits from sales in 2009 will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support: www.macmillan.org.uk

  • This is Mercedes the polar bear relaxing at Edinburgh Zoo. Apparantly they hope to move her soon to the Highland Wildlife Park where she will have much more room to roam around. Fatured in Bears of the World & Sleeping Creatures – July 2009

  • Taken from the esplanade at Edinburgh Castle. The large red building is the Edinburgh College of Art.

  • The World’s End pub, Edinburgh, stands on the site of the Netherbow Port. The Netherbow was one of the main entrances/exits to the city of Edinburgh when the city was surrounded by the Flodden Wall (built to protect the city after the Battle of Flodden in 1513). Not many people could afford to pass through the gate so the place marked the end of their world. The Netherbow Port and much of the Flodden Wall was breached by Henry VIII’s army during the “Rough Wooing”; and later dismantled in the 17th century.

  • The Mansfield Traquair Centre is a former Catholic Apostolic Church located on the edge of Edinburgh’s historic New Town. The building was designed by the prominent nineteenth-century architect Sir Robert Rowand Anderson and completed in 1885. / The most outstanding feature of the church is the vast scheme of mural decoration painted by Scotland’s leading Arts and Crafts artist Phoebe Anna Traquair in the 1890s. / Phoebe Anna Traquair – Illustrator / Leading Female Artist of the Scottish Arts and Crafts Movement. / She painted the interiors of a number of churches in England and Scotland including the chancel of the Catholic Apostolic Church, East London Street, Edinburgh (1893–1901), which is also known as ‘Edinburgh’s Sistine Chapel’. The church, no longer a place of worship, is home to the Mansfield Traquair Trust established in 1993 to preserve the building together with Traquair’s murals. / The stunning interior of the Mansfield Traquair which is known as Edinburgh’s Sistine Chapel. • Edinburgh’s castle in mid afternoon light photographed from the Vennel a steep stepped street next to the Flodden Wall. Frequently photgraphed from here but the light was good I just had to do my own, but its a difficult composition so I have just brought up the textures on the walls. I am not sure if it really works but I’ll put it up for a bit. / Nikon D40 hand held / 18-55mm lens / Two exposures layered in PS one for the sky/castle and one for the foreground. which was :hand held 1/320( foreground) and 1/2000 underexposed a couple of stops then fill light added in PS raw. / ISO 400 / F 7.1
