  • “In a cold autumnal afternoon, a wide array of fruit and vegetables caught my eye in a farmstand. Among green, yellow, orange and brown, these plump strawberries stood in a sharp bright pink contrast. / / From a closer look, their skin became surprisingly aglow in sheer fuchsia. They beckoned to me: Now, come closer, take a photograph on us!.” / / / / Artist statement / My photographs are not enhanced; they represent the true nature and colours of the subjects as captured by the lens. I never lure my animated subjects to come close to me: spontaneity is the key. / / This is an original uncropped image.

  • “Maize, a basic staple. Yet, glorious Indian Corn colours grace autumnal days. Each grain weaves a pattern in a tapestry meticulously designed. Piled upon each other on a farm stand, the rich colours of the corn ears make a delightful array of surprising beauty. / / I find inspiration in the simple elements of Nature by discovering, at a closer look, their elaborated forms, their patterns and intricacies, their sheer beauty. They teach me a lesson on survival, too. The colour in the Indian Corn grains is governed, each, by a different gene. The pigment may aid in the defense against diseases, hence, a wide array of colours in a single corn ear raises the chances of survival.” / / / Read more about Indian Corn in my written article: / / Indian Corn- Nature’s Kaleidoscope. / / / / Image © Carmen Mandel-Cesáreo / / / —-—-—-—-—-——- / Artist statement / My photographs are not enhanced; they represent the true nature and colours of the subjects as captured by the lens. • This is the Maltese Edible Snail – Cantareus apertus. A once very common land Mollusk. Mercilessly hunted (gathered) for food as it is locally regarded as a delicacy ( like escargots), and poisoned by farmers who consider it a pest. A Hermaphrodite. It lays its eggs (between 40 and 60) in a hole it digs itself in the soft loose ground ( like Turtles, Tortoises, Aligators, Crocodiles etc.) It Hibernates inside rubble walls and under loose stones during the Summer months to preserve its moisture.

  • This has to be one of the best harvests in one day I’ve ever had with mushrooms. / In this picture are: / Oysters (Plurotus ostreatus) (large fans in the very back) / Blewitts (Clotocybe nuda ) (The purple gilled fungi) / ShaggyMane (Coprinus comatus) (the 2 ‘hairy’ mushrooms on the left side directly below the Oysters) / Ringless Honey and Honey mushrooms (Armillariella tabescens and A.mellea) (the golden fellows at the bottom right side) / A perfect Elm Oyster (Hypsizygus tessulatus) (large white gilled mushroom on right side) / 2 species of puffballs on both sides of image. Gem-studded grows fromt he ground…and Pear-shapped is on wood. (Lycoperdon perlatum and L.pyriforme) / Yellow Bolete in the direct center…I still haven’t a postitive name for it…but it IS edible! Just not one of the more…yummy? of the mushroom family. / and almost forgot #10! / The beautiful red fellow in the center, is Ganoderma lucidum…or Rieshi…the oldest known harvested fungi in the world according to some sources. This is not to EAT..rather…to put into tea. / ><> <>< / All these were found in a 3 hour hike in a 2 acre park that was crowded with trees. Nobody ever hikes in this area except for my son and myself. / Now you know why I love this area so much. / After photographing, I dried, ate, refridgerated, gave away what you see…. / PLEASE, PLEASE! / Do NOT eat wild mushrooms if you are not familiar with them. Get as much information as you can before even ATTEMPTING to try one! / In the spring and fall, especially, there is news about people dying from ingesting the wrong things. / And? Don’t eat/smoke them for a stupid high. Frying your brain takes you away from the reality that we were given as a gift.
