The Female Eclectus Parrot. The Eclectus Parrot, Eclectus roratus, is a parrot native to the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, northeastern Australia and the Maluku Islands (Moluccas). It is unusual in the parrot family for its extreme sexual dimorphism. The males of the species are bright green, having bright candy-corn-coloured upper mandibles and black lower mandibles, and blue or red tail and wing feathers; while the females have red heads and blue to purple breasts, with black beaks. Joseph Forshaw, in his book Parrots of the World, noted that the first European ornithologists to see Eclectus Parrots thought they were of two distinct species. Large populations of this parrot exist in Papua New Guinea, where they are sometimes considered pests for eating fruit off trees. Their bright feathers are also used by native tribespeople as decorations.

yes, hello everyone. Check me out! I know how to get around. I’ve got wings, you say? That’s not the secret! Look how cute and fluffy I am. I know how to pick them-that’s what I mean. I escaped from the clutches of some random human, and honed in on a new one once I escaped-the head animal keeper, no less. But he didn’t have time for me, so he gave me to his dad. He also found me a bit scary-I tried to show him how much I love him…held him dear. He thought that was biting him! Yeah, this beak is pretty strong, huh-huh. So a bird lover on the team (my current pet) took me home. I welcome her and all visitors with excitement. Screech! They can’t believe their ears, and hold their hands over their ears, to keep the sound in there for ages. It’s pretty cool. So, every now and then, I give them a new treat. Screech! They get such a happy surprise! Here I am. Shyly looking back at you. See how pretty I am!

Sitting this morning commenting on some beautiful images Egbert was next to me chatting happily “good boy”, “thats not nice”, “good boy” and making kissing noises. Twenty minutes later I was speeding to the vets where he died in my arms. I don’t know what took him, I am watching the others of my flock which live in the house very carefully. This image of wild poppies swaying in the wind is in dedication to my little mate. Thank you for looking.

Eclectus roratus roratus Taken this afternoon Egbert is still very much a baby, they take a long time to mature. He says “hello” & “Que Pasa” Spanish for what’s the matter. He sits on my shoulder at the PC, when I open a funny email laughing he laughs too! Eclectus Parrots are closely associated with lowland tropical rainforest. They can be found northernmost islands in Torres Strait and eastern Cape York Peninsula, north Queensland and New Guinea region, from the Moluccas and Lesser Sundra Island, Indonesia, to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. These birds are sexually dimorphic, which means you can visually tell the difference between the sexes. Males are bright green with red and blue under their wings, and have an orange beak. Females have a bright red head, a purple back and chest, and have a black beak. Thank you for looking.

I have not seen this before, two very friendly Parrots of a different family. At first the close proximity of the Eclectus Parrot to the Major Mitchell I assumed to be one of a take over of the hollow in the tree but this was not the case . They were obviously pleased to be with each other rubbing beaks eventually., fascinating.!
