The excavator, the wall, the cloud and the bright / orange pole caught my eye while riding along the / new Eastlink tollway in Melbourne’s East (which is just / as well, otherwise eastlink in Melbourne’s west wouldn’t / seem right:) This new 39km tollway will have sculpture’s all along its route. Check out the designs here

On the 15th of June 2008 Melbourne’s newest Tollway had an open day when visitors could walk the two 1.6km long tunnels and generally check out their newest road. The $2.5 billion, 39km road opened on the 26th of June after a 39 month construction period involving 13,000 workers. It is estimated the road will turnover almost 1 million a day until 2043 when it will revert to a public thorough fare. The current labour government was swept into power back in 1999 due in no small part to their promise to keep eastlink toll free. Shortly after winning and despite promises from the federal government to help fund the project to the tune of $500 million (as I remember) if it was kept toll free, they backflipped on their promise claiming the economy couldn’t afford it. Unfortunately the new and inexperienced treasurer did his math wrong with the government ending up 1.2 billion in the black that financial year alone (as I remember), rendering the unaffordable excuse obsolete. By the time this was worked out however the contracts with the builders had been signed and it’s destiny as an expensive tollroad had been asphalted in place. For those familiar with the iconic Melbourne cartoonist Leunig, I reckon the silhouette looks like Mr Curly Now that the road is open taking a shot from this position would be illegal and dangerous, glad I had the opportunity to take it, my two girls are in the shot too. / / For other shots in this genre check out my Urban Landscapes gallery.

The sculpture is: / ‘Public Art Strategy” / Description / Fabricated steel, 19 / metres long, 13 metres / high and 7.5 metres / wide at the wing span. / Location / Adjacent to southbound / carriageway, between / Cheltenham Road and / Dandenong Bypass. / “…A story about pl ace and identity.” / “The often controversial nature of public art is my inspiration. Situated in Greater / Dandenong, the 13 metre high painted steel sculpture depicts a giant blackbird / ominously contemplating an object, part worm – part generic modernist / sculpture. Continuing my interest in working with ideas and iconic structures, / I have named the sculpture “Public Art Strategy”. Appropriating various aspects / of Melbourne’s most famous outdoor sculptures, the work is a ‘cut and paste’ / of the City’s public art. Bruce Armstrong’s Eagle, DCM’s Melbourne Gateway, / Inge King’s Forward Surge, Clement Meadmore’s Dervish, Peter Cortlett’s Tarax / Play Sculpture and Ron Robertson Swann’s Vault are all referenced in Public Art / Strategy. I am interested in how the City’s public art icons might come together / to tell a story about place and identity.” — Emily Floyd

Eastlink, Melbourne This sat for a while before I revisited it… / (update: revisited again to remove a distraction)

The Eastlink project first appeared in the third edition of the Victorian Melways (Street Directory) in 1969 as a freeway through the middle of the Mullum Mullum valley which would have resulted in the destruction of the creek bush area and wildlife habitat. The Mullum Mullum is one of Melbourne’s few remaining creek valleys where the original bushland has not been razed for housing and development. Thanks to a sustained community campaign to save the valley the Mullum Mullum tunnel to direct the tollway directly under the valley was built. This photograph is of the entrance on one side of the tunnel. . .
