  • Newfoundland is one of the most visually arresting places on Earth. The rugged and treacherous coastlines give way only to the unforgiving North Atlantic Ocean. It is a coastline marked with lighthouses that act as ever watching sentinels to welcome weary travellers home. It is a land of beautiful & quaint coastal towns, villages and cities. Newfoundland is a land visited by frozen giants from the North that create a sense of awe when seen by human eyes as they float down what is known as “Iceberg alley”. It is a land visited by massive whales during the summer that attract multitudes to the shorelines. It is a land rich in history and folklore and it is a land inhabited by a people who will welcome you with open arms. It is a land you need to visit… Newfoundland… In Living Color, captures the raw and rugged beauty of a landscape still yet untouched and marred by man’s corrupt hand. It is a tribute to a true Eden and its people that dwell there.

  • My calendar has an element of the sea in each month. / Some are tranquil, others are stormy, depending on the month. All are watercolour paintings, and two, May and October, are pen and wash.

  • my local beach… North Beach faces east so the sun rises over the water. I like to walk down there early in the mornings when it’’s all golden and still….....

  • From the Northern tip of Labrador down to the eastern coast of Newfoundland, the sea that pounds and caresses these shores is nicknamed Iceberg Alley. Bergs born 10,000 years ago on the Greenland icecap dance along the coast and far out to sea, propelled unpredictably by wind and tide, tumbling, twirling, and breaking into fantastic shapes before melting in the warm waters of the gulf stream. An iceberg’s journey down Iceberg Alley begins once it breaks off from the edges of Greenland’s glaciers. Dropping into the ocean, it is gripped by the Labrador Current and carried through the dark ocean along the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the past, during certain times of the year, the alley has been thick with the largest and most beautiful icebergs found anywhere in the world. They glide majestically along, alone or in groups, obscuring the horizon with their tall, jagged silhouettes.

  • Geisha
    by Nicole Whitty

    US$23.56

Japanese inspired paintings by Nicole Whitty Geisha paintings featured in Fleurieu Biennale 2008 Opening Nov 8, 1pm Gei Exhibition Nov 7 – Nov 30 Oliver’s Taranga Vineyard Cellar Door / McLaren Vale, South Australia Inspired by traditional Japanese art I decided to explore the elusive yet beautiful world of being a Geisha. / “Geisha” ( pronounced ‘Gay-sha’ ) means artist in Japanese. The ‘real’ Geisha was not a common prostitute, the first Geishas were men who entertained patrons through artistry. The Geisha evolved into being the role of a woman in Japan, holding the equivalent status to celebrities today for their time. / The different forms of art they performed were tea ceremonies, dancing, calligraphy, painting, music, not to mention they were and still are walking pieces of art. Hence, these amazing iconic figures have inspired paintings with a contemporary edge. / Nicole Whitty All Artwork by Nicole Whitty Copyright 2008 WebSITE: http://www.redbubble.com/people/whittyart

  • Little Boats of Newfoundland / / When the little boats go out to sea from the shores of Newfoundland / God, do me a favour and guide them with you hand / Protect them from the dangers and fury of the sea / ‘Cause those little boats of Newfoundland mean the world to me. / / My Mama told me a story when I was just a little boy / About the little boats of Newfoundland that sometimes made me cry. / Ah, she’d tell me of the dangers and the fury of the sea / That will remain until the day I die in my memory / / Brave men, she said, is what they are, those who face the icy wind / Never knowing as they leave their sheltered cove that they may never come back again. / And then as the teardrops filled my eyes would she hold my tiny hand / And say, son, the proudest things on Earth are those little boats of Newfoundland / / When the little boats go out to sea from the shores of Newfoundland / God, do me a favour and guide them with you hand / Protect them from the dangers and fury of the sea / ‘Cause those little boats of Newfoundland mean the world to me. / Yes, those little boats of Newfoundland mean the world to me. / / Roy Payne

  • I have selected some of my atmospheric paintings, and matched them to the months. Jan – Graveyard Metallica. The lowest, darkest point in winter, in the Northern hemisphere. It gets better from now on! Feb – Hetton Colliery 1838. A dark and industrial scene, we have to tough this month out, like those hard men of that era in the mines! Mar – Smalholm Sunset . The light begins to get brighter as Spring is nearly here. Apr – Blea Tarn. Spring is here and the light gets bright. May – El Golco . Bright long days are here! Jun – Corinth . The season warms up and the longest days of the year. July – Market Day. The hottest month. Aug – Toscana . Holidays abroad and at home. Sept – Victorian Lady Fishing . September begins to turn the season. Oct – Old Carpathia . The dark nights begin, and October ends with Halloween. Nov – Beamish Wheel . Autumnal colours are everywhere. Dec – Trees of Eden . The winter Solstice, and celebration of the birth of Jesus. The reverse is, of course, true for those of you in the Southern hemisphere!
