  • Little Earthquakes
    by pauldrobertson

    US$3.99–US$91.20

Named for a Tori Amos song thatmakes me cry pretty much every time. yeh, i know… i am SUCH a pussy heh. / I was still pretty down and not making any money. I was pretty insecure about this piece and didn’t show it until it had been framed for a couple of months. It is pretty much pure escapism, with darker undertones of course. / The girls don’t really exist, though I think that the place does, I found the pic of the tunnel on the net and got carried away adding my own stuff to it. / There is my left hand-print drawn into the light in the middle of the tunnel; starting a sort of trade mark with that I guess. / I do find solace in my work often, though it really is work and not play. This is a good example. It is somewhere, some elsewhere, a long way from where I was, dreamy surreal and dark. I love chiaroscuro and use it constantly, but why the hell not? The symbolism is a bit obvious now I think about it – “look there’s a light at the end of that there tunnel!” but it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t really matter at all, does it?

  • Leap of faith, Pisco
    by Elaine Stevenson

    US$5.65–US$129.20

A BMX rider passes a church building next to the site of Pisco’s San Clemente Cathedral in December 2007, three and a half months after the earthquake that destroyed more than 90 per cent of the city’s buildings, including the cathedral, leaving over 100,000 people homeless. / / / Proceeds from sales of this image will be directed to the BWB Build a Cornerstone Project. This project assists families to rebuild. Using volunteer labour and materials purchased with donated funds, BWB are constructing cornerstones for families whose houses are now in ruins. Each cornerstone is a two-room building with plumbed bathroom and kitchen fixtures, all connected to existing water and sewerage services. These cornerstones been specifically designed to withstand future earthquakes and provide a much needed helping-hand allowing people to live with dignity while gradually rebuilding their homes. • This apartment building awaits demolition more than three months after an earthquake devastated Peru’s coastal city of Pisco on 15 August 2007. Dust still hangs in the air, giving an eery glow to the streets as daylight fades, a legacy of more 100,000 buildings that were destroyed or seriously damaged in the two minutes when the earth literally shook. Carlos, the taxi driver whose car can be seen in the base of this image went out of his way to show us this building. The house where he lived with his young son, a few miles from this spot, was one of the many that no longer stands. The halo around the lamp is an effect of the dust in atmosphere (and not a digital manipulation as some might think). Its visibility is enhanced by the slow shutter speed necessary to capture such an image as the sun had long since disappeared below the horizon. The building is truly leaning, a result of the earthquake that destroyed so much of this city, including the lives of four individuals who were in the lower floor (now destroyed) of this apartment building when the earth started to shake. All artists proceeds from sales of RedBubble cards and prints from this image will be used to assist Carlos and others who have lost their homes to rebuild. / This image was recently selected for exhibition in Melbourne’s Brunswick Street Gallery. It is also included in the America del Sur – 2009 Calendar, available here. / /

  • Shock Absorbing Panda
    by MissKoo

    US$3.99–US$91.20

This illustration was done for the quake survivors in Sichuan, China. The meaning of this illustration is two-fold: First, I imagine if there were a huge panda (Sichuan is very well known for their pandas), so huge that it was able to absorb all the effects of the quake, people could have been enjoying lives peacefully. Second, the panda signifies the rescuers, supporters, donators from everywhere, they work together to give the victims and the survivors peace.

  • I did this simple T in order to collect money for the rebuilding of schools in Sichuan. / I have spent some time in Deyang last year teaching, and found this to be a life changing experience. / With all things happening in China, we tend to forget that an average person has nothing to do with big politics, yet gets hit the most when a disaster happens. / Please buy a T and 100% of the proceeds and the names of all buyers will be passed directly to the effort of rebuilding Sichuan schools. The Writing reads “Help Si Chuan” (yuan zhu Si Chuan).

  • In August 2007, a major earthquake devastated a number of Peruvian cities, including the city of Ica. This photograph was taken approximately four and half months after the earthquake on the day that UNICEF organised a special activity day for the thousands of children who lived in Ica. The photograph was taken while we waited for transport to go the stadium where the festivities were being held. The day itself was all about fun and games and treats for the children but reality was rather sobering, that these children had lived through something more terrifying than most people will ever see in their lives, two and half minutes where the world literally shakes buildings to pieces. / / Location: Ica, Perú / Proceeds from sales of this image will be directed to Hands On Disaster Response This organisation provides assistance in disaster zones during the initial stages of the emergency. HODR volunteers arrived in Pisco shortly after the earthquake and were there, helping the people of Pisco, Ica, Chincha, Paracas and Cañete til January 2008.

In August 2007, a major earthquake devastated a number of Peruvian cities, including the city of Ica. This photograph was taken approximately four and half months after the earthquake at a school where we were building temporary structures to replace buildings that had been destroyed. As all of you UK peeps are aware, we had an earthquake the other night. / It was all over the telly news yesterday. / People were making out that it cost 10 million worth of damage, yeah right whatever, only 2 houses were reported damaged & a couple of roads & cars lol Anyways I was awake and on here when you the place started shaking. / I mean compared to places like Japan or Mexico or the States, it was like a minor tremor, but you know people , they always make a mountain out of a molehill & have to exaggerate things!!!! Well it was reported to be the biggest Earth Tremor felt in this country for 30 years, ok. so they got that bit right! Well I’ve just discovered a piece of writing written by a mate on another site, and because it was so funny, I just had to put it on here….......... So for all you’s people who like to have a laugh, here it is…........ / Feel free to leave your comments! Thanks Tina Another earthquake. This time in Portsmouth. / Body: An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the richter scale hit Portsmouth this morning. The epicentre was in Paulsgrove. Casualties were seen wandering aimlessly ,one man spotted wandering was found saying “bang out of order” “mental” and “sorted”. The earthquake decimated the area causing in excess of £17.55 worth of damage. Several priceless collections of mementos from Ibiza and Corfu were damaged beyond repair. Three preserved areas of historic importance where burned out cars were destroyed, were wrecked. Many locals were woken before their giro’s arrived. One resident, Kylie Sharon Smith, a 15 year old mother of four said, “It was such a fucking shock, little Chardonnay-Destiny came running into my bedroom crying, my hands were shaking that much I could hardly skin-up”. The British Red Cross has so far managed to send 4000 crates of Sunny Delight to the area to help with the crisis. Rescue workers are still searching through the rubble and have found numerous ‘Elizabeth Duke’ sovereign rings, benefit books and Poundstretcher ornaments. HOW CAN YOU HELP? This appeal hopes to raise money for food and clothing parcels for those unfortunate enough to be caught up in the disaster. Clothing is most sought after. Urgently needed are LaCoste tracksuits, white socks, Burberry caps, Beanie hats and Reebok trainers. Food parcels are also needed. They include McCain oven chips, Aldi beans, Monster Munch and Iceland pizza. Alcohol is also in short supply, especially White Lightening Cider and Special Brew. Cash donations are also needed.22p buys a ‘signing on’ biro, £2.50 buys a Jumbo Sausage Dinner, £20.00 buys a fake MOT and £16.00 buys 200 Regal from the back of Tommo’s lorry. Your help is appreciated.

Schools in New Zealand are in their second and last week of holidays and then they return for the final term before Christmas. Last night we felt two earthquakes here in Dunedin. At 6:24 on the evening of Sunday September 30th, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck the Puysegur Trench at a location 200 km north-west of the Auckland Islands. The quake occurred near the interface between the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates, in an area where the Australian Plate is sliding under the Pacific Plate at a rate of approximately 32 mm per year. The motion is not smooth and, while averaged out at 32 mm per year, actually occurs through spasmodic events such as earthquakes which account for months or years of accumulated strain. The quake was located 475 km south-west of Invercargill and the shockwave of the earthquake registered on seismographs located in Otago and Southland at about 6:25 p.m. Residents of Southland, Otago, Fiordland and South Canterbury felt the shaking. At 10:48 p.m. another large earthquake struck the Puysegur Trench area. This quake was measured at Magnitude 6.8 and located at a depth of 10-12 km about 35 km away from the first event, being at 235 km west-north-west of Auckland Island. / The shaking from this event 505 km south-west of Invercargill reached the seismograph at Wanaka less than a minute later and the tremor was felt in Southland, Otago, Fiordland, South Canterbury and Christchurch city. By this time many people were aware of the earlier earthquake, and hence more alert to any sign of another event. Since last night, the area has been relatively quiet.
