  • Colored Pencil, original available Who cares for all beings, including the plain, non – descript, or annoying creatures everyone else ignores, drives away, or attempts to destroy? I think there needs to be a special goddess dedicated to this purpose alone. She will be the goddess who inspires us to notice the quiet child in a classroom, to acknowledge and respect the shy or awkward person nobody else bothers with. Those who honor this goddess will be recognized by random acts of kindness and senseless gestures of mercy. Devotees will capture and release the ladybugs that accidentally fly indoors during late autumn – or let them sleep in peace right through ‘till spring, snuggled in a corner of the window sill. They’ll be the persons who don’t recoil, but instead admire the plain brown snakes undulating gracefully across trails on warm spring and autumn days. A universal, daily prayer of this Goddess cult will be the ritual of feeding the nameless, drab birds as well as their more glamourous cousins. This Goddess of Small Things will be a guardian of all life, not just the colorful, dramatic forms.; she won’t pick and choose. We are surrounded by creatures deserving our tolerance, if not protection. The field mice and voles falling into basement window wells, nameless brown birds pecking for seed in the ice, non- descript beetles, mangy stray dogs and flea bitten feral cats. Who watches over the almost invisible little creatures sharing our world as they go about the daily business of crossing busy streets, avoiding predators, traps, and poison? The Goddess of Small Things is another name for the gentle heart that respects and protects all the little creatures deemed commonplace, disposable, or undesirable. The smallest face and tiniest beating heart holds a sacred place in the hoop of life, and is entitled to compassion and respect. Text copyright Helena Nelson – Reed. • Featured T-Shirt! I’ve always wanted to do a meaningful halftone =) I absolutely love the simplicity and romance of two people not needing to say a word and enjoying each others company. What makes this extra special are the rays from the morning sun. Originally a picture this is the first sunrise of 2008. Hope you like it as much as I had making it!

  • I Had A Dream
    by Wendy Slee

    US$5.99–US$136.80

I had a dream, / A dream so profound / That written words could not express it, / Only tears; / No verbal language could convey it, / Only visions. / This dream spoke in music, it played out in light, / It flickered and danced in emotional tremors / That originated from a source beyond the heart. It manifested within me but not of me / And hovered freely beyond me. / Elusive, I tried to grasp its full meaning, / But could only see it when I closed my eyes, / I could only feel it, when I let it go. / The dream had wings and I felt / The rush of air as it lifted me. We were as we were meant to be – / Released from the heavy chains of our humanity, / Risen above the petty materialism and power struggles / That we once thought defined us. / We had relinquished the ironies of our need for separation from others / That wrestled constantly with our deepest yearning for belonging and unity, / We had softened into our connection with the Earth / And felt her heartbeat as our own, / We had begun to tread more tenderly upon the face of / The one who sustains us, / And remembered again, / To honour the beauty that she held up in her mirror. / Our recognition grew in the knowing that what we saw in our world / Was but a reflection of what we held inside, / Of Who we truly are, / And that the choice between fear and love was our very own, / Not the whim of a distant God. In this moment, we had grown wings, / And through the very lightness of our awakening…. / We had reached beyond our human limitations / And soared free.

  • ME

    US$6.65–US$152.00

Pencil to pen and ink drawing of many moments in my life.

  • This is the first in my new series~ “Can I Live Here Too?” I have embarked on a journey to help the animals that have just as much of a right to live here as we do…..sad to say that baby seals like this are clubbed to death to be skinned, everyday at alarming numbers, these helpless innocent babies anywhere from 12 to 28 weeks are being murdered in terribly painful ways….I saw in a video called Earthlings, not only did they club the baby to death, they tossed its mangled body to the side where I watched the mother seal morning her baby, I felt her pain, you could see it in her eyes….she was so beside herself in the loss of her baby….I cant for the life of me understand this, I am crying at this very moment….its not fair…I cant sit here and not do anything any more…please help me teach people the importance of animals and their right to live….. / As with all in this series 50% of any and all proceeds go to the Defenders of Wildlife: in my attempt to help….please help open people’s eyes and show them how to love…. Another way to help and save, Wear your feelings for everyone to see with a T-shirt!

  • I Died many Times Before… First time I remember, I was still a toddler / sitting in the morning sun, on the concrete floor. / My grandparents’ courtyard in Salamiyeh. / I watched, fascinated, as the massive snake / made its way from the roof / down the wall in front of me. / I held a long stick in my hand, tapped / the giant head as it slithered closer. Second time, a year or so older, also in Salamiyeh. / It struck on a starry summer night. / I was playing barefooted on the patio. / Mother came running to my screams. / Sobbing, I told her a big butterfly bit my foot. / I pointed to where it ran off, watched / as she grabbed a straw broom, killed / the venomous desert scorpion with repeated blows. / I vividly recall her rushing around with one shoe on, / the other missing, laying me in a stroller, / running down darkened streets to the emergency clinic. I also died at age five, along with my mother and sister. / It happened on the two-lane Hama-Homs highway. / Mother unintentionally turned the steering wheel / as she twisted her body to chide us / for backseat bickering. No guardrails. / Nothing but protruding rocks all the way / down the steep drop-off. My first summer in college, I died in New York City. / Muggy night, uptown Manhattan, a block away from Broadway / in front of the big Cathedral. I had my arms up, / as the man who had just asked for a light / pressed the tip of his knife into my ribs. Years later, on a misty morning on Texas Highway 87, / I fell asleep at the wheel. / I had worked through the night in Victoria, / and was looking ahead to my bed in San Antonio. / My Chevy Blazer slowly drifted left / into the path of the oncoming truck. Those worlds / continue without me. / My tombstones there / mark ends of times I knew. In this one, grandmother Um Sami suddenly appeared. / Rounded boulder hoisted high. Arms fully extended. / How she lifted it? How she took dead aim, and launched it / smashing the serpent’s head? / I do not know. I was still conscious. / I do remember clearly / the terrified look on my mother’s face. / How her voice trembled as she pleaded / with the nurse to be careful. She was afraid / the syringe’s needle was going to puncture through / my tiny toe. Mother slammed the brakes as she forcefully corrected. / Car came to a screaming, precarious halt / in a cloud of swirling dust. / We stayed parked at the side of the road for a long time. / Her hands shaking, she gave us grapes, / while she collected her frazzled self. / She swore never to drive again. / Never did. “Let the creep go”, the second robber, / who had just cleaned my pockets with swift efficiency, / told the one holding my life at the tip of his knife. / They took pity on me when I told them / there was nothing in my wallet. / They slipped it back. Walked off. / It took my rage weeks to subside. I could see the whites of the wide-open eyes / of the truck driver, as I twitched awake! / He was already moving to his left / to avoid hitting me. But my reflex was to jerk the wheel / to my right to get back into my lane. / I also stomped the brakes. / We came within a hair of a head-on collision, / as he swerved back into his lane. / That was when time switched / to slow motion… / Me sitting still. / Blazer skidding sideways / on the wet grass / along the shoulder. / Dull-black asphalt road passing / in front of me. / No sound. / Finally, / everything / coming to absolute / rest. In this one an invisible hand / still cradles / my bones. © Assef Al-Jundi

She was originally named Lydia Liliu Loloku Walania Wewehi Kamaka’eha, Lydia Liliuokalani Paki, and also known as Lydia Kamakaʻeha Paki, with the chosen royal name of Liliʻuokalani. Queen Liliʻuokalani was an accomplished author and songwriter. Her book, Hawaiʻi’s Story by Hawaiʻi’s Queen, gave her view of the history of her country and her overthrow and therefore became the first Native Hawaiian female author. Liliʻuokalani was known for her musical talent. Lili’u is said to have played guitar, piano, organ, ‘ukulele and zither. She also sang alto, performing Hawaiian and English sacred and secular music. She would find herself in music. In her memoirs she wrote: “to compose was as natural to me as to breathe. This gift remains a source of the greatest consolation.” She wrote over 165 songs and chants. Some of her best-known musical compositions include the song, “Aloha ʻOe”, “The Queen’s Jubilee”, “He Mele Lahui Hawai’i”, and “Ku’u Pua I Paoakalani” ~ Source: Wikipedia !!
