  • completed 2004 age 18 Everyday we see so much of the world around us. But how often do we take the time to explore one in detail? There are, for example, many varieties of trees, and within each tree you can see a variety of leaves, and in each leaf a variety of color. Framing a particular moment draws more attention to its detail. Thank you everyone for your comments; they are very inspiring. I even see comments drawing on current issues; which is great. Medium: Watercolors I can’t remember what brand of paint I used; but the pigment was in a tube as opposed to being a dry type that needed to be wetted to use. The background was first wetted, that painted onto, while the subject, I painted onto directly to the dry surface, which I believe was 30 pound paper. • pencil crayon for the subject / ink in the background later edited in photoshop original drawing done in 2002, age 16

  • I drew this with pencil on a piece of paper in my sketchbook. I referred to a photo of my mother as a 10 years old, and somehow it ended up looking more like me. Many people mistake this to be my self-portrait. It’s funny that it turned out this way. Many people tell me I resemble my mother, and I don’t see that so much. Even as I was looking at my mother’s past photo, I wasn’t thinking that she looked like me, but in the end I see a portrait which looks like me. I drew this during my summer after grade 11 (age 17). At the time my mother was in Japan and I was missing her. Some photo reference of my mother and I. Do we look alike? This work has been featured in: / Pencil Drawing

  • Completed 2001, age 15 medium: pastels on construction paper

  • I did this in 2003 when I was 17. This was just an attempt to draw a realistic portriat without looking at any sources; I just briefly browsed through magazines to study facial features, but there was no particular model for this drawing.

  • Completed 2004; soon after my 18th birthday. This is a mural I did during my final year in high school with a few other students. This mural was completed in two months, whereas most of the other murals in the school at the time took over a year. Grade 12 was my favourite year in highschool; having completed most of my credits I had more time for extra curricular activities, so I joined the art club and painted this mural. Unfortunately first year in university was not very nice treat, and missing the good old high school days, I visited the high school one day after my first year was over… This mural was located outside the gym. Notice how I said “was”; when I went to see the mural it was vandalised; parts have been scratched away and hair was drawn on some faces and other areas. As of now it doesn’t exist anymore. Suppose this location was one were that type of actrivity was more prone to happen; in was a dark spot on the grounds level in front of the vending machines; other murals in the school were on the upper floors just outside of classrooms. On the bright side; while I was working on this one day, a visitor passed by and offered me a summer job: Medium: Acrylic on concrete blocks This work has been featured in: / Acrylic Painting

  • Completed August 2004 age 18 One day while I was painting the gym mural, a visitor passed by and became interested in my work. She offered me a job for the summer to paint a mural in her house. She requested a mural for her kitchen of a mediterranean scene being overlooked from a balcony. By doing so, the family can enjoy their meals and feel as though they are eating on top of an outdoor balcony looking over a beautiful scenery (although it isn’t eveident here, but I attempted to make the color of the balcony similar to the kitchen floor). The time frame for this project was relatively short: about 2 or 3 weeks. I drew the mural entierly free hand from a composite of several posters selected beforehand. I also visited this mural again; with the permission of my client, after I finished my first year. Unlike with the gym mural (see below), it was very nice to see this one still in good condition. Medium: Acrylic paints over a semi-glossed painted plaster wall… The wall size was about 13×7.5 ft.

  • These, were folded when I was in grade 5 (age 10) That year our teacher read “Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes” to our class. One particular moment in the story, Sadako’s mother visits Sadako at the hospital and gives her a piece of paper which her sister saved for her. Sadako takes the paper and says “Mmmm, smells like candy. I hope God likes chocolate”. Everyone laughed including Sadako. Around that time I went through an origami craze and saved bits of paper and candy wrappers to do origami out of them. Mmmm… kitkat and hershy’s cookies ‘n creme… (I don’t eat this stuff as much now :P) For those who don’t know the story of the thousand paper cranes, there is a legend that says if you fold 1000 peace cranes, your wish will come true. Sadako Sasaki suffered from leukemia, and folded cranes while she was in the hospital in how of getting better. More sample origami:
