Jogging on a brisk autumnal morning in the forests near Hilversum in the Netherlands, could there be a greater pleasure? Yes: cycling there in order to take a lot of beautiful pictures as I did that morning. Near Hilversum, 14th November 2007, 9.10 am / Nikon D80, Nikkor 18-200 mm at 130 mm / F 10, 1/60, ISO 400
SHOT BEFORE SUNDOWN
An early morning study of winter tree shape, just as we begin to break into Spring. This was taken just south of Ashbourne in Derbyshire on my way up to meet up with other UK bubblers in 2008, and I feel is my best image of the trip – well worth the early start for. Taken with a Sony A100, F4, 100th/sec, 75mm, ISO400, hand held, but resting on car roof for support This image has featured as image of the day on Fotopic.net, bringing over 500 extra views

Shore of an island in the fog, taken Friday October 24th, 2008 in the early morning, Lake of Two Mountains, Deux-Montagnes, Quebec CANADA / Despite the mist the color of the trees is still visible. “Like a man travelling in foggy weather, those at some distance before him on the road he sees wrapped up in the fog, as well as those behind him, and also the people in the fields on each side, but near him all appears clear, though in truth he is as much in the fog as any of them.” ~ Benjamin Franklin Top Ten placement in the Autumn in your Communities challenge, Communities group November 2009 / Featured in the group Communities November 2009
Once again the sunrise was disappointing. Not wanting to waste the 5:30 AM start, I tried to find a good composition using these rocks and the headland, for when I get some ND filters and the surf gets up. I welcome any comments and constructive criticism. Turrimetta Beach NSW 28Jan 09 0635 DST Canon 450D ISO100 F25 1/3s f28mm

Featured in All Countries~Wetlands, Ponds, Lakes, and Rivers I woke very early, and headed with my all my gear to a marsh not far from my place that has provided me with many photographic subjects. I was not to be disappointed with my lack of sleep, and the chill in the early morning air. Red-winged blackbird songs created a symphony of sounds, as the birds began their feeding, hopping from one lily pad to the next, finding grubs on the tops and often on the bottoms as they lifted the large leaves. Most of the action required that I shoot into the sun. I was not expecting great shots, but one or two captured the scene the way I witnessed it. In this shot a female is standing “ankle deep” in a pool of rain water on the surface of a large floating water lily, just as the sun is breaking the horizon and sending first beams of light onto this magical world. The Cornell University Ornithology site provides much information about the red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), including its calls, on the excellent website. Nikon D300, Nikkor f4 600 mm lens and 1.4 teleconverter on a Gitzo 1325 tripod. Image captured about 20 kilometres west of Campbell River, on Vancouver Island, Canada.

What a treat to be shooting these famous peaks and NOT be standing in snow that’s hip deep! This is one of the less photographed vistas of this famous trio. Lithuania, Klaipeda region, Curonian spit / THIS SERIES FROM / August 14-16, 2009 : morning/day/evening/night CLICK FOR COMMENTS / / at First Things / / ! The Curonian Lagoon (or Bay, Gulf; Russian: Kуршский залив, Lithuanian: Kuršių Marios, Polish: Zalew Kuroński, German: Kurisches Haff) is separated from the Baltic Sea by the Curonian Spit. / In the 13th century, the area around the lagoon was part of the ancestral lands of the Curonians and Old Prussian people. Later it bordered the historical region of Lithuania Minor. At the northern end of the Spit, there is a passage to the Baltic Sea, and the place was chosen by the Teutonic Knights in 1252 to found Memelburg castle and the city of Memel. The town is officially called Klaipėda since 1923 when the Memel Territory was separated from the German Empire. / As the new Interwar border, the river that flows into the Curonian Lagoon near Rusnė (German: Ruß) was chosen. The river’s lower 120km in Germany were called die Memel by Germans, while the upper part located in Lithuania was known as Nemunas River. The border also separated the peninsula near the small holiday resort of Nida, Lithuania (German: Nidden); the southern part of the Spit and the Lagoon remained in Germany until 1945. / This border remains today, as after World War II, the southern end of the Spit and the German area south of the river, the part of East Prussia with the town Königsberg located in Sambia, became part an exclave of Russia called Kaliningrad Oblast.
