The long-eared owl has head feathers (known as ear tufts even though they are not ears) which it raises when alarmed. It is buff-brown with darker brown streaks, and deep orange eyes. It breeds thinly across the UK with fewer birds in the south-west and Wales. Northern birds migrate southwards, including birds from Europe coming to spend the winter in the UK.

i have to say, i love this photo. I love the dirty wall in the background, the innocence, yet there seems to be a longing in the expression, almost a fear to expect… i like it!

Taken on November 1st, 2008. Needs noise reduction, but as mentioned in a few previous photos, I haven’t found a good method of reducing noise. Shot at ISO800 due to low available light. I tend to find pictures of Fez more appealing when in B&W. Used exposure blending to darken the background a bit. Gloucester, Virginia

We were on our way out to Stoke Poges, in Buckinghamshire the other week and we stopped off to see the horses in a field. Shooting at a marshy area near the mouth of the Fraser River, in southwest British Columbia, I was treated to the sight of a short eared owl about to begin its evening hunt. I was thrilled because I see owls rarely.
