I had a dream, / A dream so profound / That written words could not express it, / Only tears; / No verbal language could convey it, / Only visions. / This dream spoke in music, it played out in light, / It flickered and danced in emotional tremors / That originated from a source beyond the heart. It manifested within me but not of me / And hovered freely beyond me. / Elusive, I tried to grasp its full meaning, / But could only see it when I closed my eyes, / I could only feel it, when I let it go. / The dream had wings and I felt / The rush of air as it lifted me. We were as we were meant to be – / Released from the heavy chains of our humanity, / Risen above the petty materialism and power struggles / That we once thought defined us. / We had relinquished the ironies of our need for separation from others / That wrestled constantly with our deepest yearning for belonging and unity, / We had softened into our connection with the Earth / And felt her heartbeat as our own, / We had begun to tread more tenderly upon the face of / The one who sustains us, / And remembered again, / To honour the beauty that she held up in her mirror. / Our recognition grew in the knowing that what we saw in our world / Was but a reflection of what we held inside, / Of Who we truly are, / And that the choice between fear and love was our very own, / Not the whim of a distant God. In this moment, we had grown wings, / And through the very lightness of our awakening…. / We had reached beyond our human limitations / And soared free.

This was a photo I shot last week while at our local zoo here in Florida. / The word “bald” originally meant “white-headed.” The scientific name, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, means “white-headed sea eagle” in Latin. / Male and female bald eagles are identical in color. The distinctive white head and tail mark an adult, a sexually mature bird that is at least 4 to 5 years old. Younger individuals are almost solid brown, although a general mottling in the body feathers and a light coloration in the head and tail develop in older immatures. Both young and adult bald eagles have yellow legs. The young birds have a dark beak and black eyes, both of which turn bright yellow as they become adults. They have up to a 7-foot wingspan, the bald eagle is one of the largest birds of prey in the world. Adults are 3 to 3 1/2 feet tall and weigh 8 to 15 pounds. Like many predatory birds, the female is larger than the male, but size cannot be used conclusively for identification. Nests usually are built near the top of a large tree. Enlarged annually, a bald eagle nest can become the largest of any North American bird. The record nest measured 20 feet deep, 10 feet wide and weighed two tons! Immature bald eagles often are confused with golden eagles, which also are nearly solid brown. One characteristic that sets the two species apart is the legs. The bald eagle’s legs are naked, while golden eagles have feathers all the way down to the talons. In flight, bald eagles soar with flat wings while golden eagles soar with their wings raised in a slight “V”.

Personal view about birds and the way they fly over our heads.

Bald Eagles live near large bodies of open water such as lakes, marshes, seacoasts and rivers, where there are plenty of fish to eat and tall trees for nesting and roosting. Bald Eagles have a presence in every U. S. state except Hawaii. Bald Eagles use a specific territory for nesting, winter feeding or a year-round residence. Its natural domain is from Alaska to Baja, California, and from Maine to Florida. Bald Eagles that reside in the northern U. S. and Canada migrate to the warmer southern climates of the U. S. during the winter to obtain easier access to food, especially fish. Some Bald Eagles that reside in the southern U. S. migrate slightly north during the hot summer months.

Eagles And Horses / by John Denver Horses are creatures who worship the earth / They gallop on feet of ivory / Constrained by the wonder of dying and birth / The horses still run they are free / My body is merely the shell of my soul / But the flesh must be given its due / Like a pony that carries its rider back home / Like an old friend that’s tried and been true I had a vision of eagles and horses / High on a ridge in a race with the wind / Going higher and higher and faster and faster / On eagles and horses I’m flying again, Eagles inhabit the heavenly heights / They know neither limit nor bound / They’re the guardian angels of darkness and light / They see all and hear every sound / My spirit will never be broken or caught / For the soul is a free-flying thing / Like an eagle that needs neither comfort nor thought / To rise up on glorious wings I had a vision of eagles and horses / High on a ridge in a race with the wind / Going higher and higher and faster and faster / On eagles and horses I’m flying again, / I’m flying again, I’m flying again My body is merely the shell of my soul / But the flesh must be given its due / Like a pony that carries its master back home / Like an old friend that’s tried and been true / My spirit will never be broken or caught / For the soul is a free-flying thing / Like an eagle that needs neither comfort nor thought / To rise up on glorious wings I had a vision of eagles and horses / High on a ridge in a race with the wind / Going higher and higher and faster and faster / On eagles and horses I’m flying again, / I’m flying again, I’m flying again A heartfelt thank you to John Denver for the beautiful song which inspired the visual.
