“But wait. I’ll break-scratch out through the side. And don’t you think I can’t, ‘cause I am six pounds of dynamite…”—From the South San Gabriel song of the same name. I know it’s sad but it’s probably for the best…
Built around 1860 with Bluestone & Steel, this railway viaduct bridge at Taradale in central Victoria, reminded me of the old cowboy movies, when they blew them up. POW BANG BOOM / ( hdr & photoImpact ) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Click here to see all of my structural images.

...you have the eyes of a tiger, the triumph of a winner… / You have a load of dynamite, if it goes off, I’m flying with it from a German Love Song written by Ina Deter.

Dynamite, Greek for “power”, is a blasting explosive based on nitro-glycerin, wood pulp, and sodium nitrate. Invented by Alfred Nobel in 1860, mixed and compacted in a paper tube It was resistant to shock, but readily detonated by heat and percussion. Nitroglycerin invented in 1846. / Detonation heat: 9,400 degrees Fahrenheit. / Expansion pressure, 200,000 times the atmosphere / (approximately 3,000,000 feet per second). / 40% dynamite means 40% nitro. / Nitro freezes at 52 degrees Fahrenheit. / This machine packed 16 sticks per minute. And this is what miners took down into total darkness on those skips that traveled so fast they took less than a minute to get the miners to work hundreds of feet below the surface. These guys were completely out of their minds…

I think ever since him and I met and started talking, I always thought to myself either “Dude, this guy would be an awesome dad” or “I want to be like him when I grow up.” He’s got a good heart, and the Universe often seems to just be after him… and that sucks. Tryin to keep a brotha DOWN! But yes. I’d have his back if he needed help, cause a big guy with a big heart who gets flooded with a ton of crap, needs a break every now and again with the help of his friends. More recently, he’s done something that really only further inspired me, and amplified my want to do this picture, as it felt so appropriate. Belic has amazing stregnth and determination when it comes to helping others, who’s not afraid to be himself or do what he thinks is right no matter how hard it is for him. Ya sounds a little cheesy, but ya know what? I more than respect that about him, I frickn love that about him. I look up to him in that aspect. :) I’ve had this idea stuck in my head for months, of Belic about to beat the shit out of a great white shark with dynamite and a pic axe. It’s a metaphor, to where the pic-axe represents effort, and the shark represents troubles. The dynamite doesn’t represent anything, it’s just dynamite to blow shit up. Pushed this thing out as soon as my schedule freed up, and got it done pretty quick. I experimented with a few things here, like the style for one. It’s a bit on the comic/illustrative side with some exaggerated lines. I was going for a little bit of dynamics and I tried to limit my colors, and I was also trying to work within a perfect-square composition. This entire style was inspired by an awesome artist, named Jared Moratis (Pop Monkey)... It’s very ‘skater-ish’ with the almost obnoxiously saturated colors and outlines. Love the style. Artfulreggie and IG_Kirk helped me out with this one with brainstorming. :)
Robert and I worked for a month or so on a blasting crew. It was such interesting work! Up to that time, I hadn’t known much about drilling the holes, tamping the dynamite into them, setting the caps, stringing the wires together, then setting them off! Which was my favorite part of all! We worked in a gated subdivision, where people were building houses that cost $30 million each. I know, it’s very hard to imagine such a thing…but these houses were near a ski area…all the movie stars etc had mansions there. Most of the houses sat empty, except for a few weeks out of the year. Because we worked in an area surrounded by these expensive mansions, we didn’t dare have flying rocks or debris going through any one’s windows. These huge mats, made from segments of tires were laid over the blasting pad we’d created to keep all the rocks and debris in place after the dynamite blew. A big excavator laid the mats into place. Photo taken at the Iron Horse subdivision, near Whitefish, Montana, with a Canon 10D, 70-300 mm lens.
