I’ve had Kraken on the mind a little bit lately, so have ended up with this image and my Kraken story. This image isn’t painting a scene from the story, as I didn’t have a commercial fishing ship image to play with (that’s okay, I’m not looking for one…!)

Candid shot of father & daughter silently watching the sun sinking in the sky. I sat on the beach for quite some time watching the two of them fishing. He would pull the fish in, she would run into the surf, grab the line and unhook the fish, then bury it head down in the sand. They spoke very little but seemed to work in perfect unison. This shot was one of only two that I took of them. I am so glad I was patient. Best viewed LARGE Image copyright © Marion Cullen. All rights reserved. The most beautiful sunset, one evening in Maine.

I’m not a beach person, never have been, but after reading Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s Gift from the Sea which was written on Sanibel/Captiva Island, Florida, I had a strong urge to go there. My husband and I took a belated 37th wedding anniversary trip to the islands which we thoroughly enjoyed. The sunrises and sunsets were a joyous sight for us, and this photo which I’ve titled “Last Light” is among my favorites as it symbolizes the way people cling to the last rays of light on the beach, squeezing in every available moment at the seashore. The area in the distance was a gathering place for fishermen who continued to cast till they could see no more.

This photo was taken at Lorne which is a seaside town in Victoria, Australia. The image below ‘Pier-scape’ is available here

It’s a tough job and to be honest I never really know what I’ll come back with, whether we’ll have a good day or a bad day, but the boys and I, well we just push on and on average, you know, we seem to do ok. Ha ha my father used to joke, if there’s not enough to sell, well at least we’ll have dinner today! These new pressures about over fishing the seas, well they do worry me, we don’t see fish as big as they used to be. It nags me in the back of my mind. Thanh turned his hand to taking tourists out. He seems to do OK, but somehow he’s more stressed nowadays, he’s grown older. I don’t think that’s for me, it attracts the pirates. The South China Sea is no place for expensive cameras and jewellery. Still look at that sunset. Today is a good day, I can wait to get home and spend some time with the kids, let’s worry about the world tomorrow.

This was taken at Toledo Bend Lake in Louisiana. I love the reflections in the water of the string of docks along the shoreline and the silhouettes of the fishermen who are still casting as the last rays of light illumine their way.

Mooring up in tiny Turkish bay of Sogut we saw this fisherman getting ready to set out just as the sun set and it was gettting dark. We guessed he was hunting for octopus or squid perhaps as he motored around in circles with his flashlight in the very deep bay… This is my 1st silhouette so comments and tips especially welcome… Enjoy ! / ;)
