  • A pen and wash I did in Durham more years ago than I care to remember! / (1984 actually !) / It depicts the cathedral sat on top of the hill and one of the bridges over the River Wear.

  • We never thought this day would come, / But it’s finally here at last, What once was our bright future, / Is now are dim-lit past, But we hold onto the memories, / The lessons that we learned, The pathways we have traveled down, / The corners that we turned, And soon we say our sad goodbyes, / That will last us forever, We may see each other again, / Maybe once or maybe never, So make your goodbyes ones to remember, / The kind that will stay in their heads, Those are the goodbyes they will treasure, / The ones that were sad to be said.

  • River & Dam in Durham / / A person should go out on the water on a fine day to a small distance from a beautiful coast, if he would see Nature really smile. Never does she look so delightful, as when the sun is brightly reflected by the water, while the waves are gently rippling, and the prospect receives life and animation from the glancing transit of an occasional row-boat, and the quieter motion of a few small vessels. But the land must be well in sight; not only for its own sake, but because the immensity and awfulness of a mere sea-view would ill accord with the other parts of the glittering and joyous scene. / ~Augustus William Hare and Julius Charles Hare,

  • Tea room in Whitby North Yorkshire

  • When I am an old horsewoman / I shall wear turquoise and diamonds, / And a straw hat that doesn’t suit me / And I shall spend my social security on / white wine and carrots, / And sit in my alleyway of my barn / And listen to my horses breathe. I will sneak out in the middle of a summer night / And ride the old bay gelding, / Across the moonstruck meadow / If my old bones will allow / And when people come to call, I will smile and nod / As I walk past the gardens to the barn / and show instead the flowers growing / inside stalls fresh-lined with straw. I will shovel and sweat and wear hay in my hair / as if it were a jewel / And I will be an embarrassment to all / Who will not yet have found the peace in being free / to have a horse as a best friend / A friend who waits at midnight hour / With muzzle and nicker and patient eyes / For the kind of woman I will be / When I am old.

  • Some days the sun consoles my fears / And lifts the wetness of my tears / Some nights the stars and moon embrace / The sorrow written on my face

  • Taken at Durham UK You could not step twice into the same rivers; / for other waters are ever flowing on to you. / - Heraclitus of Ephesus

A wonderful little spot and a place to regain your breath after discovering the hidden hair pin bend. • Please View Large I loved the tree in silhouette with the castle in the autumn glow of the settiing sun. Wikipedia © Bowes Castle is in the village of Bowes in County Durham, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire. It was built in the corner of an old Roman fort guarding the Stainforth Pass through the Pennines. Around 1136, Alan, Count of Brittany, built a castle in the north-west corner of the site. After the death of Alan’s son, Earl Conan the Little, ownership of the castle passed to the crown. King Henry II built a massive stone keep. Most of the work was carried out between 1171 and 1174, including repairs that were made following an attack by King William I of Scotland in 1173. Around 1216 enemies of King John again besieged the castle and it was further besieged in 1322 in a regional feud between Henry Fitzhugh and the then Earl of Richmond. After that the castle fell into ruin and the crumbling remains of Henry’s keep are all that are now left. This is part of our English Heritage. Nikon D300 / Sigma 24-70mm Google Maps

  • all you really ever need… / is… a little… love, peace & happiness… less stress, but not freedom totally from stress… / & challenges, to keep you entertained… & by all means we need not read any further into the script…

  • The castle was originally built in the 11th century as a projection of the Norman king’s power in the north of England, as the population of England in the north remained “wild and fickle” following the disruption of the Norman Conquest in 1066. It is an excellent example of the early motte and bailey castles favoured by the Normans. The holder of the office of the Bishop of Durham was appointed by the King to exercise royal authority on his behalf: the Castle was his seat. It remained the Bishop’s palace for the Bishops of Durham until the Bishops made Bishop Auckland their primary residence and the castle was converted into a college.
