The warden’s call in the eleventh hour. / And it’s easy to say but it’s hard to remember / That praise is for suckers and death is forever. / Under your nose but just over your head. / Martyr meets maker in ten shades of red. / These are your twelve steps. / Take them on your knees. / Show them at the door and they’ll let you in free.

Main portal of the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, that is, the cathedral church (Duomo) of Florence, Italy. The huge bronze doors modelled by Augusto Passaglia, date from 1899 to 1903. They are adorned with scenes from the life of the Madonna. The mosaics in the lunettes above the doors were designed by Niccolò Barabino. They represent (from left to right): Charity among the founders of Florentine philanthropic institutions, Christ enthroned with Mary and John the Baptist, Florentine artisans, merchants and humanists paying homage to the Faith. The pediment above the central portal contains a half-relief by Tito Sarrocchi of Mary enthroned holding a flowered scepter On top of the façade is a series of niches with the twelve Apostles with, in the middle, the Madonna with Child. Between the rose window and the tympanum, there is a gallery with busts of great Florentine artists. BEST VIEWED LARGER More shots of Florence can be viewed by selecting the icons below:

The Eastern Door of the Baptistry of the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, that is, the cathedral church (Duomo) of Florence, Italy. This is the masterpiece of Ghiberti, who worked on it for 27 years, lavishing on it all the richness of his imagination, combined with a fine sense of composition and profound knowledge of the modeller’s art. Michelangelo defined the door as fit to be the “gate of Paradise”. The door, a universally admired masterpiece, has ten panels depicting Biblical scenes. At the centre of the door at left is the self-portrait of Ghiberti. The door’s original gilding has recently been recovered from beneath the patina formed over the centuries. It was badly damaged by Florence’s flood in 1966 when the waters of the Arno reached a height of more than 180 cm. After restoration it was moved to the museum of the Cathedral and substituted by a copy. BEST VIEWED LARGER More shots of Florence can be viewed by selecting the icons below:
