I love the split of tones and colours in this image, almost a good versus evil thing as the red night sky creeps in over the blue tones of the daylight sky further over the horizon.

I have just been invited to display some of my photographs at an exhibition in my home town. Although it will not be my usual darker stuff, instead being the photographs i have of the local area, it will still be some great exposure for me and I’ve also got agreement from them that i can display a web address where people can buy my images so should hopefully drive some sales on RedBubble for me as well! ~Shepy

A close up of the coal staiths at Dunston during a sunset

An outlet pipe runs right to the river bank at an abandoned coal staiths.

This piece of wood, obviously from the nearby abandoned coal staiths due to the metal fixings, lays washed up on the shore, rotting in the sunlight. I think this is quite apt as it just about perfectly describes the state of the one proud mining industry in this area that the wood was originally used to support.

The gantry walking along the ship side of an old abandoned coal staiths
-
All you can see are the silhouetted outlines of the pulleys and a distant tower block set against the blood red sky.
-
This is the ganyway down which tens of workers would have walked every day to get to the coal staiths for a long and danger day of work loading the ships with coal to head out to sea but now they lay abandoned as the mining industry in the area has all but vanished. The top level you see was where the coal trains would pull in before the workers would unload the coal into the blue shuttles you see in the centre of shot, which would run it down into the belly of the ship.

The stairs leading up from the foot deck the to train deck at an abandoned coal staiths.
-
The rotten foot gantry at an abandoned coal staiths, if you were to go through this you would be straight into the icy river below.
-
The handle to this winch is all but rusted solid, its snapped cable hanging idly from it. Taken at an abandoned coal staiths.
-
A salmon pink sky descended as i was stood on top of the abandoned coal staiths giving quite the backdrop for the view along the main deck.
-
Looking out to the sunet from the train deck of the abandoned coal staiths you can see the industrial estate and its gasometer as well as two tower blocks of apartments in the distance.
-
A view of one of the pulley systems and an abandoned coal staiths set against a lovely pink backdrop of a setting sun.
-
As the sunset bore on, it took on very dark and sinister tones making it look almost as if someone had set the very sky on fire.
