Umpqua Light was my first lighthouse, captured many years ago on film when I camped overnight in the adjoining Umpqua Lighthouse State Park. This view was taken on a clear December noon. The lighthouse rises above the cliffs overlooking the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area at Winchester Bay, just a few miles south of Reedsport. The tower, made of stuccoed brick, rises 61 feet and has a distinctive red and white flash pattern. First lit in 1894, the light was automated in 1966. This image was taken on December 21, 2006, using a Nikon D80 DSLR fitted with a Sigma 28-50 mm tele/zoom lens set at 40 mm. ISO 100, f /10.0, 1/400 second.
