  • Dogs Wouldn’t Touch Dumplings or Baozi Dumplings / © Loredana Crupi 2007 Australians have meat pies and Tianjin has Gou’Bu’Li’Bao’Zi or Dogs-Wouldn’t-Touch Dumplings. Stories abound as to the origins of the name. During the reign period of Emperor Guangxu, a man named Gao Guiyou established a flourishing dumpling (bao’zi) business that his dumplings became known all over the land. Because of his refusal to give away his recipe and trade secrets, Gao Guiyou was often referred to as Go’Bu’-Li (a dumb dog). However, there were other stories. Some said Gou’Bu’Li or Dogs Wouldn’t Touch was actually invented by Gao Guiyou himself to provoke passersby into buying his bao’zi. Anyone who slighted his bao’zi was, well, a dog. The true answer to the question was, however, that when he was a baby Gao Guiyou was given the pet name Gou’Bu’Li or Dogs Wouldn’t Touch and that is why his bao’zi and bao’zi bar were given the name Gou’Bu’Li. Lined Dumpling Squid, or Striped Pyjama Squid (Sepioloidea lineolata) under Edithburgh Jetty. This squid is around 5cm long, and quickly buried under the sand after I took one shot. They are seen reasonably regularly on nights dives under the Edithburgh jetty, although this was taken during the day, so I was pretty lucky to find him!
