/ / / Dot and Spot is from the ‘Beach’ and ‘Friends’ Series of cards and prints by Karin Taylor. The original painting sold some time ago at a local art prize called the Southern Cross Art & Craft Exhibition in Ballina. It is one of my favourite pieces. Dot and Spot was created on canvas textured paper, using mixed media.

The future of African predators is in peril. It is estimated that only 10,000-15,000 free-roaming African lions remain, down from 50,000 a decade ago. African lions are now listed as Endangered (West African subspecies) and Vulnerable (East and Southern African subspecies) by the World Conservation Union and are on Appendix II of the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) list. African lions are in danger of disappearing altogether due to disease (FIV, bovine tuberculosis, canine distemper) and habitat encroachment. Today’s modern world subjects lions and other wildlife to many dangers. Mankind constantly seizes more and more of the remaining wild areas of Africa, forcing lions onto smaller and smaller parcels of land. Large-scale developments destroy the lion’s natural habitat. In areas inhabited by livestock, lions are frequently shot, snared or poisoned. And sadly, the hunting of these amazing animals for “sport,” for man’s pleasure, is still encouraged as a revenue producing industry by many African governments. African predators simply will not survive unless they are protected. 100% of proceeds from any sales of this image will be donated to the Virginia Zoo

“After Leo Delibes” I normally paint in silence but inspired by a forum discussion I thought I’d have a try at painting to music. Delibes’ “Flower Duet” from Lakmé is one of favourite classical pieces so I set it to play on iTunes and tried to paint it. It was great fun trying to finish the painting before the music stopped. Acrylic on paper. 297×210mm / August 2008

Harmony chased by melody; we all gather ‘round. With each strum of the strings another of us is pulled in. Soon together we all sing, each adding our own hue to what is now, our song. ~This piece has a very personal significance to me. Although I made sure it didn’t have a holiday feel to it, it was actually inspired by my first Christmas back in Minnesota in 2005 (after splitting with my ex-husband.) My cousin had spent a significant amount of time doing missions work in Africa and she was back for the first time in years as well. My normally very healthy Grandma had developed a staph infection and had been put in a nursing home for about 5 months but they let her out for a few hours on Christmas day. We were all sitting around my parents house Christmas night and my father and uncle pulled out there guitars and led us all in Christmas carols. It was so special, it really was one of those moments where I knew everything would be okay again.
