  • dryad….....blooming…...... / drawing

  • The Dryad symbolizes feminine power- our oneness with Nature, and the beauty of the soul of the tree exposed.

  • A pencil drawing of a tree spirit on smooth cartridge paper

  • The dryad is bound to her tree and reaches in vain to the freedom of the pegasis that flies afar.

  • My personal take on the classic dryad, or wood nymph, from Greek mythology. Done with rapidograph pens and india ink on bristol board.

  • Here is the partner piece to my earlier Dryad, this one being the male counterpart to the female version. This one took a little more work, from the enormous amount of shading. The canopy of trees is supposed to almost look like a darkened sky of clouds because the foliage is so dense, as if it’s hiding the wooden adonis away from unworthy observers.

  • Dryads like to live near trees. / Sometimes they transform into trees, / like Daphne, who transformed into a / laurel tree when Apollo tried to rape her / Laurel wreaths were thence given to / the winners of song and poetry contests

  • Hamadryads are forest nymphs who are so linked to their trees that if the trees were destroyed, these forest spirits would themselves cease to exist. In Greek mythology, the gods and dryads punished mortals who harmed trees without first propitiating these spirits. It’s a long way from the “slash and burn” approach that many modern cultures now take to clearing forest and woodlands in the name of profit and progress.

  • Photography done by ME!! A DRYADS POEM......... When meadows are grey with the morn / In the dusk of the woods it is night: / The oak and the birch and the pine / War with the glimmer of light. Dryads brown as the leaf / Move in the gloom of the glade; / When meadows are grey with the morn / Dim night in the wood has delayed. The cocks that crow to the land / Are faint and hollow and shrill: / Dryads brown as the leaf / Whisper, and hide, and are still. Siegfried Loraine Sassoon (1886 – 1967) * / *Dryads and Hamadryads in Greek Mythology / Dryads and hamadryads are two types of wood nymphs in Greek mythology. These female nature spirits were thought to inhabit trees and forests, and they were especially fond of oak trees. Dryads were often depicted in myth and art accompanied – or being pursued by – their male counterparts, the satyrs. Dryads, like all nymphs, were supernaturally long-lived and tied to their homes, but some were a step beyond most nymphs. These were the hamadryads who were an integral part of their trees, such that if the tree died, the hamadryad associated with it died as well. For these reasons, dryads and the Greek gods punished any mortals who harmed trees without first propitiating the tree-nymphs.[

  • This pen and aquarelle sketch was inspired by a woman I met on the Bibblumen Track who would like to return to the Earth as a tree. She wished to do this so that others may rest against her and learn of all the wonderful connections that she had discovered with the Earth and of her many adventures. Candy Matthews copyright

  • this picture was created from a photo I had originally taken in Green Timbers park of a couple of twisted trees and their branches that had been overgrown with moss. If I can figure out how to post the original here, I will upload it to be seen. It looked so much like a forest creature emerging from the trees that I decided to morph it into that through the use of photoshop 7 and a lot of extra tweaking. = ) After the long harsh winter has finally ended, / the spirits of the forest awaken…
