During the Tang period in China, art, literature and music flourished, and female musicians were in abundance. I find their traditional garments beautiful, artworks in themselves.

The name djembe (JEM-bay) is taken from the saying “anke dje, anke be” which translates everyone gather together We grew up with a great appreciation for music in my family. My grandfather played the accordian, guitar, piano, saxaphone and clairinet. My kids all play one instrument or two (Trombone, Saxaphone, Flute, Piano, Drums) / Myself, I play the clarinet (not often though), the piano, and recently trying to learn a little on the djembe drum. At this point I do it more justice photographing it than playing it. It has a warm, earthy primal sound and I love to hear it played well! Still a goal for me to try to learn it! / For more information and a sound sample click here To hear a song that inspires me to want to learn to play (besides on the steering wheel of my jeep!) click here! Like a gift from the heavens / It was easy to tell / It was love from above that could save me from hell / She had fire in her soul / It was easy to see / How the devil himself could be pulled out of me / There were drums in the air as she started to dance / Every soul in the room keeping time with their hands and we sang [Chorus] / A-yo-a-yo-a-yo-a / And the voices rang like the angles sang, singing / A-yo-a-yo-a-yo-a / And we danced on into the night [2x] Like a piece to the puzzle that falls into place / You could tell how we felt from the look on our faces / We was spinning in circles with the moon in our eyes / No room left to move in between you and I / We forgot where we were and we lost track of time / And we sang to the wind as we danced through the night

i could kick myself (and have been)... this mandala was done for my friends 50th birthday (which was a couple days ago) and it started life in a different medium in different colours but… as I put the finishing touches on the first one, I spilled an entire jar of water over it and destroyed the whole mandala! so… back to the drawing board and I redid the entire thing, this time in texta so it wouldnt run! go to post it and didnt take my reading glasses. put the wrong price in the value box on the international shipping registration form (it was headed to Glasgow, Scotland for my dear Irish friend!) and put $3,800 instead of $380… Sammy didnt get it for his birthday:( its held up in customs because I put the wrong value on it and they may ask him for import duties!!! (FOOTNOTE – they did ask him for import duties and so it is on its way back to Australia for me to resend – this time as a GIFT!) I have learned my lesson… so Sammy my friend – happy 50th birthday – here it is!!! POSTSCRIPT 2009 Sammy came back to Australia just recently for several gigs and the mandala went home with him safely entubed in his luggage… we needed to reconnect on many levels… one of the most important was the learning that one must follow ones own path, no matter how unhappy it will leave others – because in striving to be everything for everyone else, we lose ourselves… Be true, be strong – walk the path less travelled… the minstrel is you, Sammy – playing bodhran, harp and guitar … wearing your cap and visiting the four directions and corners of the land… the celtic knots weave your magic music within us all… the claddagh rings bind us all together with love… On standard cartridge with a mixture of marker pens, textas, gouache and coloured pencils.
As I finished this work this morning, I was soon reminded that my path must be sacred and true, as I witnessed 4 Bald Eagles and 2 Golden Eagles sitting along the river treeline, never since we’ve been here have I seen a grouping like this together. My body was tingling from head to toe and I got so caught up in the beauty, I could only take a few photographs (which I’ll share soon). / In Northern America, the Eagle was considered great medicine power. To the Native Americans there were different kinds and divisions of Eagles. The Golden Eagle had a very high rank. The most potent and magical was the Sky Eagle which the Iroquois called Shadahgeyah. Among the Hopi, the Eagle god was called Kwahu and according to their legends, this great bird seldom came below the clouds; only the holiest of Shamans ever saw it. Even the Aztecs said this bird represented celestial power and the rising Sun. / As a Solar Eclipse approaches with the Chinese New Year on 1/26/09, the thought behind this Mandala becomes more clear…”We Are ALL One Tribe” Rainbow Hoop Created with Wacom Graphic pad/pen and enhanced with Redfield plug-in fractilius filter and photoshop7
