An open country road lined with trees. These trees are over 150 years old and are nearing the end of their lives. The National Trust has planted a further row of Beech trees behind these so that when they are no more the new ones will take their place. They were planted as a lead up to Kingston Lacy House in Dorset – I’d love to have them along the ‘driveway’ to my house!
Part of the drove of trees near Triscombe Stone on the Quantock hills in Somerset.
For the M.I.A Challenge…. / I regularly used to do a 7 hour drive through the night to get down to Cornwall so this song brings back memories for me…. Roy Orbison – I Drove All Night
A mob of sheep being returned to their paddock after crutching.
Another of the sheep moving down the road to their paddock.
Droving Sheep at Albert © / Vicki Ferrari Albert, New South Wales, Australia. This was taken in the township itself, opposite the Rabbit Trap Hotel. Taken using negs back in approximately 1987. This would have to be one of my favourite photographs! I have scanned the 8X12 print and done some minor touching up (typical neg dust and scratch) with photoshop but apart from that, this image is as it is! Hope you like this! And thank you for looking (and reading!) Framed Print / (psj2)

Pastel on canson paper This is delving so far back into the past that I can’t remember when I did it!!! The rather badly drawn figure in the background is my husband, Peter, and there are a couple of doggies assisting him who are not visible! This was a back road which went through the property where we were living at the time, and the sheep were being moved to greener pastures.
Pastel on Mein Teintes paper – 50cm x 35cm This is the ‘reverse’ version of ‘Moving the Mob’. (This time one of the dogs is visible)! I sold the painting from our local gallery circa 2003. It is quite interesting revisiting older works, and I am tempted to play with textured paper again after looking at these two paintings. Farmers in the past shifted sheep over many miles by droving. This was taken at the end of the droving era, as horses were no longer on farms, but being replaced by motor-bikes. Since this farmer retired there have been no more sheep on roads in this area.

One night when travelling sheep, my companions lay asleep / There was not a star illuminate the sky / I was dreaming I suppose, for my eyes were partly closed / When a very strange procession passed me by / First there came a kangaroo with a swag of blankets blue / And the dingo ran beside him as his mate / They were travelling mighty fast but they shouted as they passed / We’ll have to jog along, it’s getting late The pelican and the crane they came in from off the plain / To amuse the company with a Highland fling / The dear old bandicoot played a tune upon his flute / And the native bears sat round him in the ring / The drongo and the crow sang us songs of long ago / And the frilled necked lizard / listened with a smile / The emu standing near with his claw up to his ear / Said, Funniest thing I’ve heard for quite a while The frogs from out the swamp where the atmosphere is damp / Came bounding in and sat upon the stones / They each unrolled their swags and produced from little bags / The violin, the banjo and the bones / The goanna and the snake and the adder wide awake / With an alligator danced The Soldier’s Joy / In the spreading silky oak the jackass cracked a joke / And the magpie sang The Wild Colonial Boy Some brolgas darted out from the tea-tree all about / And performed a set of lancers very well / The parrot green and blue gave the orchestra its cue / To strike up The Old Log Cabin in the Dell / I was dreaming I suppose, for these entertaining shows / But it never crossed my mind I was asleep / Till the boss beneath the cart woke me up with such a start / Yelling, Prithee me, where the hell are all the sheep Traditional Australian Folk Song
