“Praying for Rain” Photography & Artwork / by Holly Kempe © “As the farmer knelt down on the salty sand, / He needed rain to save his land. / The crops were wilting, the cattle all dead, / He looked around, not a word was said. / The ground was dry, where is the rain? / What could stop this worthless pain? / The farmer cursed in sheer despair, / He did not have a drop to spare. / A thundercloud covers the western sky, / A bolt of lightning explodes near by. / The farmer looks up and begins to pray, / Hoping that the rain will come his way. / Then drip-by-drip it starts to fall, / The crystal water like a clear glass wall. / The trees and flowers all in bloom, / Then once again, gone is the gloom. / The water fills the old parched creek, / The rivers bulge as the waters peak. / The mud squelches through the farmer’s dry old / hands, / As he thanks the Lord for saving his land.” / ~ Meg Hayes Year Seven / St Mary’s Primary School Featured in the: Redbubble Homepage – November 08 Recent Sales: 1 x Card – unknown buyer 1 x Card – unknown buyer 1 x 40” x 27” matte canvas through Fine Art America – Jessikalyn – America / Thank you so much to everyone. / Part profits donated to Starlight Childrens Foundation Australia See “Praying for Rain” at my website /
Pastel on sanded paper (burgundy Colourfix) 70cm x 50cm This is a pastel painting. I was intrigued with the way the light was glinting on the raindrops on these eucalyptus leaves after a brief shower (which really did nothing to relieve the drought)!!!! Featured in the group ‘Works on Paper’ – Dec 2008 / Winner of the ‘True Colours’ Challenge and featured in the Contemporary Pastel Painters group – March 2009 / Featured in the Australia! You’re Standing In It group – June 2009

As the drought worsens in Australia, our hope for water rests on the windmills. But even they are dry.

Dedicated to the farmers facing the drought in Western Australia. NOTE: This is one of the few publications which I have not placed a border around it, just so card-buyers can get the choice of having a white or black background. Personally I’d go with the white =) MORE WORKS FROM MY PORTFOLIO /
Another rather sad and disturbing indication of the severity of the current drought that is ravaging the countryside and farms of Australia. Rusty Lakebed / Author: martin steinbrugger Many times life can seem like a thirsty barren land… / As though all our hopes and dreams, / Are little more than rusty grains of sand. Parched by disappointment time and time again… / Without hope life is but a severe drought, / That seems to have no end. Like clouds looming on the horizon withholding their rain… / So too, unless we let go of our past, / We can never be healed from all our pain. Apart from God we are as trees without water, / Destined too whither and die… / For God is the source of our eternal hope, / Through whom all life is meant to thrive! I have already posted a photo basically the same as this, slightly different angle, but after looking again, I think I like this one better. Any opinions? Please check out Melinda Kerr
As promised – the new illustration on t-shirt. Works nicely don’t you think? Wear it with pride and spread the word of environmental awareness – or just pretend you are a bad-ass with a penchant for skulls…
This was taken on an utterly magnificent farm near the Grampians in Victoria. It’s so sad to see the effects of the drought first hand – the paddocks were just dust.
I was trying to capture the whole environmental aspect here…..and what may happen in the future if changes are not made…(its already happening – photo was taken in Tumut last year).
