  • Last night Grahame and I went to a Mothing night at Titchfied Haven Nature reserve, Hampshire. At 7-00pm a white sheet was laid out on a picnic table and they brought out 2 moth traps that had been set the night before, inside were lots of moths, some flew away as they opened the traps but most were just sitting on the sheet or egg boxes from the trap. They also showed up some that had been caught previously and they tipped them onto the sheet as well and we were able to photograph them. We were given tea/coffee and a couple of biscuits during the evening then at the end we were given the chance to go out onto the reserve and watch the traps being set up in the open, it was a white sheet and a large very very bright bulb. We got even more new moths. We finally left at about 11pm it was pitch dark, my knee ached and I was dying for a cup of coffee…........ but it was fun and interesting and I got some great moths to share with you…...................... Wingspan 45-65 mm. This species gets its English (and Latin) name from the habits of the caterpillar, which is supposed to have a liking for drops of dew. The yellowish females are slightly larger than the orange-brown male, but both sexes usually show the two distinctive white spots on the forewing. Flying at night, in July and August, the males especially are attracted to light. Grasses and reeds form the bulk of the foodplants, and the species is fairly common in the southern half of Britain.
