This one is not in the charity series. I took it at Port Melbourne because I thought it served as a great analogy for adventure. It captured the last moment of contact with the known before leaping off into the unknown.

In Northern Minnesota we took a canoe trip in Voyageurs National Park. The day we arrived it was raining lightly and a very heavy fog sat over the lakes and rivers. It seemed our September vacation was not off to a very pleasant start. While standing on the dock waiting for our boat to come and shuttle us to Kettle Falls on the US/Canadian border, I took this picture of a small waterfall coming into the Ash river and the autumn colors reflecting off the water. The next three days were gloriously sunny and mild. The fall leaves were stunning and the blue water of the park lakes was truly just like a dream.

I sometimes do “reality checks” to see if I am awake of dreaming. There is a huge amount of things you can do like counting your / fingers (in dreams you often have more or less than in reality), looking / at the time (in dreamtime it’s usually something like 99:69 o’ clock), / turning lightswitches on/off (they don’t work in dreamworld). I do this to have a lucid dream, which means I am aware that I am / dreaming and can take control of the dream. This is mainly for fun but / also useful because you can escape nightmares easily, or do things you / didn’t have time to do in daytime (like thinking about what to paint next), / but sometimes it’s also frightening to be alone and awake in your brain… The reality check that works best for me is to hold my nose shut with / my fingers and try to breathe. I had my first lucid dream as I realized I / could breathe under water (because I’m lying in bed, obviously, surrounded / by air). So breathing has become my “trigger” for it and in dreams I can / breathe even when holding my nose shut, as my brain doesn’t let my / “real” hand do it because I am in sleep paralization.
I had a dream about this the other night. / I woke up and did a quick sketch so I wouldn’t forget it. / I hope I dream like this more often…. and soon! / Thanks for looking and enjoy. / PLEASE VIEW LARGE / / Copyright Notice: / All images are the property of ©Leah Highland and may not be used wholly or in part without the prior written permission by email, including copying, duplicating, manipulating, printing, / publishing (even on a web site), reproducing, storing, or transmitting by any means.

About This Screenprint / Jack (photo below) was my very first cat. I got him back in late December 1983 from the SPCA in Hamilton. As I walked up to the cage where the cats were, this smart, clean-cut grey and white cat detached himself from the group and came straight towards me. A couple of days later, after he had had his operation, I took him home. Jack was a character. I took lots of photos of his antics, and this was one of the first screenprints I made when I took up screenprinting in 1985. All the limited edition prints are now sold, and I have left only a few prints that failed my quality control, so ir’s nice to lwt this image live again. Screenprint on Rives Blanc 260gsm 10×8.5 in.
