“All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.” / Thomas E. • Much is lost about the women’s medicine societies of pre reservation Lakota culture, and what survives is kept private. There’s a small amount of information available about the Double Woman (DW) society. Briefly, a vision of DW grants recipients with an high level of talent in traditional skills, especially quilling and tanning. DW dreamers endow their creations with the power of dream and vision. They were (and are) gifted healers and strong, doing the same work as a man. Like men endowed with Elk medicine, DW dreamers have the power of seduction and are perceived as different from other women. DW dreamers (DWD) were sometimes lesbian, living with other women in the manner of husband and wife. This relationship might have been short or long term. If the individual’s vision changed she’d leave the relationship and entered a more traditional one, and her choice was honored by the people. While some say this was limited to DWD, I think acceptance and tolerance was practiced throughout the culture and not restricted to this society alone. / / DWD are associated with Iktomi and Elk Dreamers, men possessing the Elk Medicine. All were powerful, sexually charismatic, potent, untamed, unpredictable, and dangerous. Half of DW’s face is beautiful, the opposite side hidious. After seducing the man, DW would turn the ugly side of her face toward him and the shock drove him crazy. She’d then transform into a black tailed deer and bound away. Sexual contact was fatal to the man, who lost his mind or pined away after she left him. The DW spirit and those who dream of her may possess people standing too close to them, and DW herself can seen and heard around rocky cliffs. Her voice might be heard at night, and her feet make sounds like bones clicking, hoofs or bugs rattling, bears shuffling, and small stones knocking together. She was used as a boggy to frighten children into obeying. Like deer she hears over great distances, its tough keeping secrets from her. DW sends birthing, stomach and menstral cramps to women, and colic to babies, while DWD can cure the same conditions. DW has influence over fruits of all kinds and can send stomach pains to those who eat them. DWD are midwives and treat women’s health, reproductive conditions, gastro intestinal, urinary and lower intestinal areas. DW appears in a vision or dream as two women holding hands or a rope from which a small white dog, ball, or doll is suspended; this image may be seen beaded or painted on old pipe bags and traditional dresses and was also part of a ceremony preformed by DW society members. DW represents dualistic answers to a single question, often oracular. A DWD is gifted at whatever creative endeavor she undertakes. A fertile, wild woman untamed by man or society, she’s her own mistress. As such, she also represents the forces capable of upsetting society and its boundaries. Every creature and symbol in this painting connects to this archetype and women. The last time I had this image on RB I included some of the meanings but this time Ive told more about the archtype herself.
