  • Interview with John Douglas
    by Paul Compton

Next up in the series of artist interviews that started here...

Next up in the series of artist interviews that started here is the marvelous John Douglas. / / My first encounter with the work of John Douglas left me reeling and I have been ever since. He can turn his hand to any medium and format and create something thought-provoking, emotive, edgy, soulful and uniquely his own. His knowledge of artists and art movements is vast and his support to other artists is commendable. I would personally like to thank him for his input on Redbubble and for his beautiful art and nature. So without further ado here is my interview with John Douglas.......... How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? / Apart from reading (I am an avid reader) my existence centres on creativity, and all else is secondary. My ‘day job’ is as a travel photographer. / My great love is painting. I also dabble in ceramics, film, composing music, drawing, printmaking, writing. / I have so many ideas rushing in, clamouring for attention, it is hard to keep up. But I try; I am always writing notes so I can come back to an idea later. / I generally work until I am exhausted. Late at night when I am about to go to sleep an idea will come and I think, “NOOOOOOOOOOO! Let me rest!”, or the inspirations come knocking in dreams and won’t leave me alone until I get up and do something. But if it came to it, I would rather have this way of life than not. / I’ve given a long-winded reply, but basically I have no other life than pursuing creativity; this is the way it has been since I was a young child. I have no concept of what it must be like to have a life that has other aspects to it. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful. / Victor Barker I am very happy to know he is on redbubble. I have been friends with Victor Barker since my late teens. Together we have seen each other through many ups downs and arounds in life, and I love and admire Victor’s drive to create and explore. / Currently Victor primarily focuses on writing, though his creative interests have a broad range, from film to painting to music to photography and on… I admire that he is never afraid to leap in wherever his muse calls him. / Victor to me embodies the idea of “your life is your art”. / Conversation with Victor is a delight, for his artistic sensibilities, his humour, his intelligence, knowledge, his anecdotes. From meditative practices in remote mountain ashrams to tales of drinking binges with Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud; from discussions on novels with Paul Bowles to working with the early pioneering use of LSD as a psychoanalytic tool; to talking music with Billie Holliday to outrunning Fijian coups; life on the sea, life as a yogi devotee – conversation with Victor never fails to inspire me to reach ever higher. / When I think of significant writers of the last fifty years, writers who have also explored other creative avenues and who have led BIG lives – Paul Bowles, William Burroughs, Gore Vidal – I cannot think of these writers without thinking of Victor Barker . Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you. Industrial I by Susan Grissom / Susan’s background in restoration of ninth-century architecture in Italy, her vast knowledge of modern art, her love of jazz and blues inform this work with a combination of deft, painterly texturing, savvy cool and hints of underlying passion. / I admire this painting’s successful combination of emotion, technique and knowledge. That it references art history while making it’s own statement. How effortlessly Susan manages to make the work monumental yet intimate. / Industrial I dances on the tightrope and makes my heart sing. Home Page by Helen Bascom / This work by Helen Bascom is one of the more important works on redbubble. With a few quick lines, Helen manages to convey rage, love, social commentary and humour. The themes explored by this work range from redbubble content, the status of women, standards in society, Helen’s soul. Home Page covers many big themes with great heart and a simplicity of line and technique, and a damn cheeky wit. Cityscape by Shayne Chester / Shayne always inspires with his drive to create and his determination not to give ground to the intellectual gymnastics and posturing of so much celebrated contemporary painting. I love Cityscape for the elegant brushwork and superb composition. I love the diversity of Shayne’s abilities, from his adroit photography to his strong and challenging sociopolitical poster work, to his sensitive paintings. Cityscape uses a bold landscape format to create a consummate portrait of introspection. I love that Cityscape uses an outer image to reveal an inner world; it is for me a compelling argument why well-crafted traditional painting will always have relevance, no matter how post-post-post modern Mary Boone et al. say we should become. Galway on a Good Day! by Joni Philbin / I am a great lover of the naïve technique and composition in Joni’s paintings. There is a freshness to Galway on a Good Day! that delights me. I like how Joni’s work, no matter the apparent subject, seems to be primarily about exploring an inner world with honesty and an open heart. Joni’s painting is fluid yet charmingly childlike, and develops further with every new work she presents. Joni reminds me that making art is primarily about the process and evolving the soul, not about making a so-called finished picture. Apartment One by Martin Venit / I admire Martin as he is a musician who has explored further and successfully with his photography. I like Martin’s no-nonsense technique in his photos, the hint of urban musicality, the eye for rhythm and the gaps between. / The Apartment One series of photographs by Martin document the apartment of his brother David. David died from complications arising from AIDS. Martin’s photographs are simple, stark. The “flat” documentary style and minimal post processing allow the subject to breathe. I enjoy a good Photoshopped image, but there are also times when filters and fiddling get in the way and can smother an image. / Martin’s Apartment One (and series) shows how effective having a good eye and just letting the camera record can be. Late at night, just before I go to sleep, the image of 1A on David’s door sometimes appears under my eyelids. What is the primary reason you make and enjoy experiencing art? / I make art because I have to. I don’t always enjoy it. Name some artists that have shaped the way you see the world. / Yoko Ono, Paul Klee, Kate Bush, John Fowles, Louise Bourgeois, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Leonardo Da Vinci, Marc Chagall, Diane Arbus, Oscar Wilde, Camille Claudel, Pablo Picasso, E.J. Bellocq, George Braque, Joel-Peter Witkin, John Lennon, Gore Vidal, Joseph Beuys. Thank you endlessly John x / Stay tuned for my second redbubble artist interview coming soon.

At the moment, I’m having to be strong for a number of reasons and so today I needed to find something that would help me through. I knew exactly where to look for it and it worked yet again. I’m writing it in here just in case anyone else needs a little bit of extra strength just now…When we resolve to lift our life to its highest level, the strength of our soul guides us. It’s up to each of us to develop the courage to walk this way…and here’s the story I read again today…from ‘The Monk who sold his Ferrari by Robin Sharma” Once, in ancient India, there was an evil giant who owned a magnificent castle overlooking the sea. As the giant had been away for many years, fighting in wars, the children of the nearby village used to come into the giant’s beautiful garden and play with great delight. One day, the giant returned and threw all of the children out of his garden. He then erected a huge marble wall around the garden to keep the children out. / Winter came with bitter cold and the giant wished the warmth would soon return. Spring visited the village that lay below the giant’s castle, but the icy claws of winter refused to leave his garden. Then, one day, the giant finally smelled the fragrances of spring and felt the radiance of the sun through his windows. He ran into his garden. The children of the village had somehow managed to climb over the castle wall and were playing in the garden. It was because of their presence that the garden had been transformed from a wintry wasteland into a lush place filled with roses, daffodils and orchids. All the children laughed and giggled but one. The giant spotted a little boy who was much smaller than all the other children. Tears ran from his eyes as he didn’t have the strength to climb the wall into the garden. Suddenly the giant regretted his evil ways and ran towards the little boy to help him. The other children fled fearing for their lives but the tiny little boy stood his ground. ‘I will slay the giant’ he stammered. ‘I will defend our playground.’ / As the giant approached the child, he opened his arms. ‘I am a friend’ he said. ‘I have come to help you over the wall and into the garden. This will be your garden now.’ / The little boy was happy and was now a hero to the other children. He gave the giant his gold necklace and said ‘This is my lucky charm. I want you to have it.’ / From that day on the children played with the giant in his wonderful garden. But the brave little boy whom the giant loved the most didn’t return. As time went on the giant gre ill and frail. In those days it was the little boy who the giant thought of the most. / One day in the middle of a bitter winter, the giant saw a miraculous sight. Though most of the garden was covered in snow, at the centre stood a magnificent rosebush overflowing with spectacularly coloured flowers. Next to the roses stood the little boy who the giant loved. The boy was smiling sweetly. The giant danced with delight and rushed outside to embrace the child. ‘Where have you been all these years, my young friend? I’ve missed you with all my heart’ / The boy was thoughtful in his response ‘Many years ago you lifted me over the wall into your magical garden. Now, I have come to take you into mine.’ / Later that day, when the children came to visit the giant they found him lying lifeless on the ground. From head to toe, he was covered by a thousand beautiful roses…. Always be brave like the little boy. Stand your ground and follow your dreams. They will lead you to your destiny. Follow your destiny, it will lead you into the wonders of the universe. And always follow the wonders of the universe, for they will lead you to a special garden filled with roses.

First of all, thanks to everyone that will take the time to read this ! I sincerely appreciate it very much ! Yesterday, I was invited to join the group International Photographers Alliance. I accepted and viewed this as a very nice accomplishment . I want my work to continue to get out there and am doing all that I know to do to keep on moving forward in my photography / art career. As most of you know, I am the host for Live, Love, Dream…..... It was a group that I started in hopes of touching as many people as I could through out the world by giving them a chance to be themselves, showcase their artistic abilities and truly soar in the passion that they have for art ! Well, it has come to my attention today that many people are not very supportive of invite only groups. I truly had no idea that this was an issue on RB. The people that truly know me online know that I love all People, I wish complete success to each and everyone of you , and I WOULD NEVER THINK I AM BETTER THAN ANY ONE PERSON OUT HERE ! Actually, I KNOW IM NOT ! LOL I have a long ways to go although I am continueing to climb daily ! :) The reason I am writing this, Is that I would like to get as many opinions as possible on what your views are on being in a group that is by invite only…....... PLEASE NO DRAMA ! I dont like drama ! LOL I would just like sincere answers. I would just like to know the majority feel on this subject ! Again, thank you to everyone that comments. I just wanna see each and everyone of you soar in your chosen fields! Hugs to one and all and hope you have a beautiful weekend !!!!!!!!! With Love, / Bonita

Here in the RedBubble office we’ve been loving the range of your work and your diverse backgrounds. Some of you are studying, others are creative professionals, some have just stumbled across creative skills and passions after years working in other fields, and others are becoming so addicted to your creative hobbies they are starting to take over! Do you wish you’d backed your creative talents earlier in your life and career? Or do you think it is better to build up a solid backup plan and then explore your creative potential once you have established some security? As Edith Piaf would sing “non je ne regrette rien” – regret nothing – but what advice would you give your kids? Chase the dream 100% or nurture the hobby?

ABOUT MY EXHIBITION The woks exhibited represent the linkup of two artists, a photographer and a sculptor. Such an attempt to blend two spheres of art is really innovative and a bit unexpected. There had been few who were successful in such an attempt. Both authors, blending their art by the means of the photo art, are the winners. Sculpture, as such, is rather a static art, sometimes “performing” in a specific, sometimes artificial, environment. However, the means of the plastic photography, seemingly, make the sculptures movable, dynamic; they make you feel the sculptures are moving. They become alive, start moving and react both to the environment and the views captured by the photographer. I would like the viewers also note the colour solutions of the photos, aimed at the strengthening of the overall impression of the imagery. The original blend and overlapping of two arts let see the impressive plastic metaphors, giving birth to various associations. CLICK PHOTO IF YOU WANT VIEW / / /

  • SO WAKE UP!!!
    by Redtempa

    Everywhere I look I see zombies…

Everywhere I look I see zombies, eyes half open, minds closed to reality…trudging through a routine, until they are told they can stop. Knocking shoulders as they pass but not stopping to acknowledge each other, not even noticing each other. For they are living a dream, a dream so disconnected it bares no resemblance to the real world. A concrete dream, a dream filled with beeps and alarms, signals and sirens, a dream bombarding them with so many messages their senses are numb. / In this dream there is no need to wake in the morning, just get out of bed, plug yourself in, do your job and play the game…that is all you need to know. Food appears, waste disappears…how is not important. The cycles of life are just hindrances, getting in the way of your job… stockpiling goods, paying debts… stockpiling goods, paying debts… They keep dreaming, they keep walking… until one day, something happens that causes them to wake. Their eyes open revealing the glorious light of the world. They leave the noise behind and suddenly they can hear again. They open their minds and suddenly they can think again. But it’s too late, it has been too long… and the shock ...kills them

1: Tell me something about In A Dream? / I wanted to create a digital landscape that was magical and dream-like. I wanted to combine several of my own photographs and blend them together seamlessly to make it look like a real place. 2: How did you create it? / “In A Dream” was created by four different photographs of a forest. I changed the opacity layers and used different blending modes to combine the four different landscapes into one landscape that looked real. I highlighted different areas of the image and darkened other ares by selecting different sections of the landscape. Then I went back and made sure they were blended well into the landscape in order to avoid choppiness. 3: What version of PhotoShop did you use? / I use Photoshop CS2 with a Wacom Tablet Intuos3. 4: Any tips or tricks you would like to Share? / My tip is don’t be scared to try new things. In my opinion, it’s the best way to learn Photoshop. There are plenty of tutorials on the web and plenty of people here willing to help you learn. So don’t be scared to ask and try different ways of doing things in Photoshop. 5: How did you go about learning PhotoShop? / I basically taught myself. I took a digital art class in college with a professor who knew virtually nothing about Photoshop. Basically, he left the students to learn on their own. It was very hard at first, but I never gave up and kept with it. I made sure I used Photoshop frequently in order to retain my skills and build on them so I could learn new ones.
