  • The characters in this design are styled on Japanese Kanji characters, but are actually in English. If you look closely, you can read what this tshirt says. In Zen Buddhism, “Kill the Buddha” refers to how one should not worship and idolise scriptures, teachers, or statues, but rather trust in one’s own abilities, in one’s own heart and mind. Obviously, nothing literal should be taken from this design. By externalising spirituality, one can become caught up in acquiring knowledge and spiritual attainments, adding another retreat or technique ‘notch to the belt’, so to speak. Therefore, the idea behind the design is very much related to spiritual materialism. The central character means ‘Buddha’ in Japanese Kanji.

  • At this time of year the northern nights get longer and many leave home in the morning and return home at night in darkness. So it isn’t uncommon to have bright colorful interiors and monotone exteriors. I like the idea that this is a picture of a window.. are you looking at a picture or through a window ? Next work in this Northern Landscape Drawings series (I’m not quite sure about this one yet.. it may change.)

  • I’ve been working with young school kids recently and this work is influenced by their way of seeing things. At this time of year it’s dark by 4pm and when it rains it can be quite dark inside during the day. We have been deluged by rain in recent weeks. I love the way kids aren’t afraid of using black.. Guess what.. its raining again !

  • Just trying out drawing people with my wacom tablet. Its a very different process from normal drawing because you can alter scales at will.. distort.. and develop the work building up layers. I’m not interested in depicting people in obviously mechanically generated ways. As soon as you introduce recognizable features it tips the balance and the work is viewed as realistic rather than abstract. I’m keen to retain that basic abstraction, but I am also interested in people. So there are contradictory ideas at work in this picture.
