Well, one of you might be an old blog reader. Aladyx is a friend of mine from DeviantART.com who told me about RedBubble and gave me the link with a link to one of her watercolor pieces. I like this community. I love the way the front page shows artworks, lots of art jumping right out at me. I’ve been active and busy lately. Being a fantasy writer, I never miss “http://www.nanowrimo.org” and the only year I didn’t win it was 2002, when I was too sick and didn’t get started till the 25th. This year I’m about halfway done with my newest novel, Snowflake Obsidian, a fantasy with an equine hero based on a Lipizzan stallion but enchanted, he’s actually become a wizard now and I can’t wait to see how his quest comes out. A month ago, in October, on “http://robertsloan2.livejournal.com” where I usually blog, I started doing a drawing a day for a group called ArtSoMoFo. This led to so many interesting experiments and new directions that I kept it up right into November. I started experimenting with ACEOs around that time or a little earlier, doing colored pencil realism in a size category where I could finish it in a day or so instead of hanging onto it for weeks and years puttering and burnishing and finishing it with the same level of detail on a large piece. I’ve been having fun with it. Then last week I started auctioning on eBay, with the username robertsloan2art—and that’s distracting. I’ve gotten no bids yet, but plenty of reassurance that no one bids till the last day and maybe the last hours when it rolls up onto the front page. They’re getting some views, that’s something that makes me happy. I got all set up over there, joined an ACEO group, made some new friends and have been getting focused on selling my art again. I live on Social Security, but I’m starting a business—my writing and art, working at getting self supporting again so that when I do get a big novel sale or commission it doesn’t get taken out of my check. For years I worked as a street artist in New Orleans, but the physical toll it took on my bad leg and back eventually forced me to retire and after that life got hard for almost a decade. I wound up in homeless shelters and after that banged around staying with friends till my daughter got a house and kids and a new husband, so now I’m living in a good place and have finally gotten past surgery and other health problems to where I think I can build up again to being able to support myself. I know I want to. While the check is in some ways an easy ride, it gets frustrating and it just rubs me wrong that I get penalized for earning. I’ve got one book in print. Raven Dance is available at Amazon, search on title or on Robert A. Sloan author name, it’s a big fat science fiction epic with a black and red cover. I’ve sold a couple of pro stories for big money and am now also getting into doing how to draw articles at “http://www.ehow.com” where you can search on my username robertsloan2 or just skim the Art > Drawing category till you start seeing my name—a lot of my articles make it to the front page on popularity. They vary, but I’m slowly building up a complete drawing course there. I also started working on Street Sketching I: Portraits in 2004, got interrupted by health trouble and life crises but have been steadily rewriting it. I teach art in person and have always been able to get a beginner from zero to selling realistic portraits within six months to a year on meeting with them monthly in a group or one on one. So I had to relearn how to write completely! No plot, no characters, no zingy dialogue and no setting? How do I make a book interesting when it has none of the things that make a novel fun? But it’s coming along now, and the eHow articles have really been giving me a better feel for it. The technique is using pastels or colored Conte crayons on tinted art paper. So there’s an introduction! My self portrait is reasonably accurate in my icon. I’d have used my daughter’s photo, the one I used for a reference, but I thought it’d be cool to use art for an icon. I’ll be posting some art soon… watch for it.

Hi Everyone, Sorry to all those people who have me on their watchlist. I have just finished adding 7 artworks to my portfolio. I know seven is quite a lot, especially if you have other people that you are watching. The drawings are from a large collection that my Grandmother did in the 1920’s. She was quite talented and worked as a graphic artist. Those were the days…I have drawings that were done to advertise furniture of the day…didn’t take photos like they do now. Advertisements , artwork for stage shows etc were all drawn by hand. It’s wonderful to look through and see the fashions of the day, and also their style of humour. She has left me a wonderful legacy that I will treasure forever. Thank goodness for RedBubble because now I’m able to share this original work with others and I’m also able to have her work framed and hang it on my walls. The originals can go back into the archives where they can be kept safe for the next generation. I have the ability to send copies of these as cards to family members and they can also share the work of this wonderful lady.

I’ve returned from China and am now living in Los Angeles, California once again. It’s a strange transition from my hermetic life in Zhongshan and Jiangmen, but I’ve jumped right back in. / I have two artbshows coming up. The first is a two day run on April 3rd & 10th at META Theatre on Melrose, stating at 10pm. At this show, I’ll be showing and selling originals and prints of the work I produced while living in China. It’s an eclectic collection. The second show is a month long run in May at the Avery Schrieber Theatre from May 2nd to the 15th, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I’ll post a new journal entry for that one later. This show is a special show with my work inspired by The New York Acting Ensembles performance of “A Hat Full of Rain”. I’ve had a lot of positive feedback so far and it looks like I’ll have a nice turnout. I’m looking forward to it and adapting back into being a social artist. It’s been exciting. Every day I meet someone else in the arts, and I keep getting opportunities to get involved in creative endeavors. I have a feeling this will be a good year. Hope to see you there. META Theatre / 7801 Melrose avenue / Los Angeles, Ca 90046 / 10pm / April 3rd &10th

I’m proud to present the Contemporary Artist Joshua Bowe at arts-fine.co.uk. His originals are for sale from the Arts-fine.co.uk online gallery .Prints of his work can be seen here at redbubble . The work presented at arts-fine is of his figurative studies, collages, drawing and paintings. His loose figure study style lends itself well to a move toward the abstraction we see in many of his finished pieces. Keeping elements of the real to anchor the work, yet making bold use of textures and colours to express more than reality.
Just letting you guys know that all my originals are for sale if you’re ever interested.

Technique / The art of scrimshaw was something I had read about for years but never had an opportunity to pursue while my wife and I raised our six children. When I began my scrimshaw career in 1994, I was amazed at how difficult it was to pursue. After I checked out some books on the art of scrimshaw and Celtic knot art from the library, I realized how many restrictions there were on the use of elephant ivory and whale’s teeth. Not wanting to contribute to an existing environmental problem, I almost gave up, but in 1998, I acquired a 3 1/2 foot long section of ten thousand year old mammoth tusk, which was legal, and 90% useable. I then began my quest to develop a line of one-of-a-kind hand carved, Celtic scrimshaw jewelry. It took over two years to develop a system to freehand the multicolor Celtic knot art, and then scrimshaw it, (inscribe) onto a piece of polished mammoth tusk. The Celtic knot art depicted in the Book of KELLS was done by the COLUMBAN monks using freehand drawing techniques and is considered to be the finest example of Celtic knot art in existence. Because of this the Book of KELLS is also considered to be the finest art manuscript ever created in Ireland. Because of its exceptional quality and the era it depicted I felt it was essential that every piece I make is given the same care and respect that the monks used when completing the Book of KELLS. Displaying the combination of multicolor Celtic knot art utilizing the art of scrimshaw was now a reality that I had only dreamed of. I begin by cutting the tusk in half lengthwise which made it easier to work with when cutting a blank. I then cut a section with the grain for strength, about 1/4 inch thick and 2 to 3 inches in length and width. Using this blank, I decide what I will make. I can create letters, medallions, plain crosses and Celtic crosses, which are the most difficult to carve and scrimshaw. Although most pieces start out approximately 1/4 inch thick they may end up thinner after fine sanding and polishing. I then cut out a rough shape using a jeweler’s saw and hand file the edges until it is the right shape and size. After the piece is cut and polished, I trace it on a piece of graph paper with indelible black ink. I then free hand the Celtic knot art to scale on graph paper. This allows me to filI in the colors and see how they all work together. The most important thing is to see how the negative space, (areas without knot work) relate to the actual filled in knots and whether the design enhances or detracts from the piece. Much of the Celtic knot art I use is my interpretation of the knots found in the Book of KELLS and contained variations which I have created. Because I am working with limited space on the ivory, I use a lighted overhead magnifier to supplement my failing eyes. When the freehand pencil design is finished on each piece, it is then covered with hair spray to keep the pencil drawings from smudging. I then scrimshaw the outline and fill in the lines with an .005 indelible black ink pen. I then allow it to dry for half an hour before scrimshawing the interior of the knots. To apply the colors I must scrimshaw the polished surface of the piece in every outlined area. This is done so the ink can sink into the porous ivory material. Because this work is very tedious, it requires a lot of patience to prevent the colors from running together. I use a “speed ball sketching” project pen set to apply the ink into the tiny areas. Once the ink is applied, I then spray the piece with numerous coats of MINWAX polyurethane clear gloss spray. This usually takes six days to complete because of the drying time involved

The original work of art, a 50×70 cm hand painted canvas (framed) has been SOLD to Phil and Lorraine, Gokova, Turkey 28 June 2009. Following my recent Art Exhibition in Gokova I approached a local bar-resturant and enquired as to whether they would be interested in displaying my original works. We negotiated a percentage commission on sale. This is the first to be bought from this venue. Today Phil and Lorraine purchased the second in the series. A very happy end to a very happy week. Thankyou!
