Did this quick piece for fun.. I miss my old friend, Brown, a stray cat. And sometimes, before i sleep, i’d imagine this image in mind.. And i’d fall asleep feeling him close to me once again. I first drew the chibi and the cat in flash.. then i did the rest of the painting in photoshop.. Wanted to share with you all my latest “painting”.. well it’s painted on computer actually for a specific purpose. As much as I love the smell of turps and the mess of gooey paint, I also spend time doing digital mock ups and reinterpretations of my real world work when I can find the time. I produced a drawing tutorial for the Australasian website of Wacom (makers of digital drawing tablets) some time ago and was contacted by them recently and invited to submit a painting for an upcoming book titled “The Art of Making Marks”. The deadline was pretty tight at the time (2 days) so I dusted off my trusty Intuos 3 tablet, picked up my pen and set to work overnight. I finished up at 2:30 am but was quite pleased with the result. / It’s so weird how some image editing and painting programs really do feel like I’m pushing and dragging paint around.. a normal painting like this in traditional media (oils) could take me a few weeks to complete! However, six hours straight left me pretty tired by the end of it but it was nice to play around in a painting arena I haven’t visited for a while. A lot of people have difficulty accepting computer generated work as real art but it doesn’t bother me and has its place. / I love my jars of smelly turps, soiled rags, pots of brushes, broken charcoal, oil sticks, pastels and large primed canvas just like the next crazy painter. I also love that solitary buzz of a late night in the studio with good music, red wine for company and a half finished painting on the go. But this was something different… and with a finished result just as satisfying for me. So, I introduce to you “The Girl who loved Prose”, a fiery red haired Irish woman with a passion for the literary arts and like her caffeine girl friends, an ambiguous stare. / It took several long hours to complete but I convinced myself to stop eventually. / You just don’t mess with Irish girls.. subject: I started this drawing a couple of weeks ago but got distracted and left it unfinished. Went back to it last night and had to laugh at how the mouth looks..ahhahaa …. Oh man….that was precisely how I was feeling at the time. Makes me laugh now though. I’m not sure who the hell is gonna want to buy a drawing of a pissed-off woman…ahahhahaha…. I wonder if I should try and re-draw her mouth to make her look like she’s smiling? But then she doesn’t have smiling eyes either, does she? subject: This drawing was inspired by a dream I had a few nights ago, in which I was walking through a park at night and came across a naked man sleeping under a maple tree. There was more to the dream than I’ve drawn, but the key symbols and their meanings according to dreammoods.com are as follows. NIGHT: To have a dream that takes place at night, represents some major setbacks and obstacles in achieving your goals. There are some issues in your life that you are facing that are not too clear. You should put the issues aside so you can clear your head before coming back to it. PARK: To dream that you are at a park, represents a temporary escape from reality. It indicates renewal, meditation, and spirituality. It is also an indication of a readjustment period after a serious personal conflict or an ending of a passionate affair. MAPLE TREE: Balance, promise, practicality. NAKED MAN: If seeing a naked person in your dream disgusts you, it might signify anxiety about discovering the naked truth about that person or situation. It may also foretell of an illicit love affairs, loss of prestige and scandalous activities. She brightly shines amongst the rest / Had from the start, my heart possessed / A lucky man, I’m truly blessed / My precious prize in life’s contest / / Amongst all others that did surround / From sea so vast it does confound / One in a billion, I have found / To give my life, meaning profound / / This artwork was inspired by my beautiful wife, who has always put up with me and loved me unconditionally. She is my ‘One In A Billion’, although, I’m sure that it is much higher number in reality than a billion. :) / / This was created in both PSP8 and Photoshop. I drew up the original vector heart in PSP8, and then used that to make the masks and composites in Photoshop. It was done trying to give it kind of an ‘art-deco’ feel to it. The cutaway below shows the central heart in better detail, as it is hard to see otherwise. / / / I am pleased and honored that this artwork has won first place for the Drop Of Color challenge in the Abstract Digital Art and Writing Group for December 2008. To be awarded this honor by your peers, many of them you consider far more talented than yourself, is indeed the greatest of compliments. / / /
