  • For drawing day Medium: marker, pens, pencil crayons and chalk pastel. I was inspired by the Japanese artist Hiroshi Senju, who tends to limit his colors in his paintings. Sometimes he paints an image where the background is the complimentary colors of the subject. His style is simple but at the same time intense, where the foreground stands out from the complimentary background. This drawing however is different from his style; I have done another painting before which is closer to his style: As for the form of the tree, my inspiration came from this: More from Drawing Day: / This work has been featured in: / Color Me a Rainbow

  • This pencil drawing (on Modigliani textured 145gsm paper, chosen as suitable for effects required in drawing this subject matter) is from a series of drawings done in 2004 in the Northern Cape on a road trip to Namibia. I have a passion for drawing trees and what inspired me about this particular one is that the branches had an a quality reminding me of Hebrew and Arabic calligraphy. / Aloe dichotoma, also known as Quiver tree or Kokerboom, is a species of aloe indigenous to South Africa, specifically in the Northern Cape region, and Namibia. A good example of a quiver tree forest is to be seen on the road / from Nieuwoudtville to Loeriesfontein. Modeling of Aloe dichotoma in South Africa and Namibia has contributed to understanding of protected area needs in response to climate change. Known as Choje to the indigenous San people, the Quiver tree gets its name from the San practice of hollowing out the tubular branches of Aloe dichotoma to form quivers for their arrows.

  • Colored pencils on Bristol board, / 12 x 9 / 2008 Another Astroportrait. Isobel is my daughter, a triple Sagittarius (Sun, Moon and Rising Sign), with a predominance in Fire and Water. I wanted that her portrait had a surreal, magical quality, what I achieved using strong colors and abstract elements. My idea was to portray her as a little elf, as a fun thing. A unicorn was chosen to keep her company: a “lighter” symbol for Sagittarius, more appropriate for a child’s portrait than the traditional centaur. An open field with trees which leaves remind red flaming hearts compounds the background. Isobel is all heart, a spirit full of passion and intensity. A river runs trough the field – the water quality of her personality. Differently from the mysterious ocean water of my own portrait, peaceful Isobel’s water nurtures and refreshes, representing the caring side of her personality. On the other side of the background we see a deep sky, symbol of the desire for expansion and unlimited freedom of Sagittarius. Two hummingbirds, symbols of optimism – another trait of Sagittarius – come out of the deep blue. On her hair, a crown of lotuses, flower I like to use to represent the sign of Scorpio. Although Isobel is not a Scorpio herself, she’s got a formidable stellium (an alignment of planets) in this sign, what gives her a lot of Scorpio characteristics. The triskele on the right top shows the glyph of Sagittarius and the color red, for Fire. Red is also in one side of her clothes – the other is blue, for Water. Related work: / Ariel and The Lion
