8” square, Derwent Drawing Pencils on beige 100% rag Stonehenge drawing paper. Photo reference by Vanessa Pike-Russell, of her pet land hermit crab Djinn. I drew Djinn for Vanessa as part of an art trade for her old Kodak Cx7330 digital camera (which is loads of fun!) and the set of Derwent Drawing Pencils. After two years of work, this piece was finally finished last October and oddly, came out precisely as I planned it when I first looked at the reference and the range of colors in the pencils. Djinn is colored pencil realism taken to the neurotic extreme with all those tiny bumps and textures on the legs, and I had loads of fun doing it. I think he’d make a good print or card too, especially for hermit crab fans!

Not much to say here as it’s pretty self-explanatory. A kid and a duck. That’s about it. After I finished this one my wife said that it looks a bit like the kid has the “crazy eyes.” I didn’t really notice anything while I was drawing it, but I think maybe she has a point.

These portraits have ranged from dogs, horses, hamsters and even fish in a bowl! I personally developed this sharp focus pastel and prismacolor pencil technique to make my drawings come alive. This young German Shepherd, named Fuzzy, was just over two when I was commissioned to do this portrait. He was a scary dog that was tearing at the fence to get to us but he was oddly afraid of my camera. When I got it out he ran and hid! It took a zoom lens to photograph him for this portrait. This is a graphite sketch on 11” x 14” 400series medium 80lb. drawing paper and took me one evening to do. Created by Linda Costello Hinchey of SW Virginia.
