Red Dragonfly
dragonfly got caught in the rain and had to dry his wings off before he could fly again.
No Close Macro Lens. Free hand shot no time for a tripod. But the color and subject still came out pretty good I guess. It was all there for the chance.. No telling when the Dragon Fly would be gone. Late sunlight.. I am posting it anyway.. Thank goodness my wife was there to steady my stance..
Ok.. I had a choice of just a few captures of the Dragon Of Passion. As all you Digital Photo people know, Take many pictues and throw away many.. My Wife liked the first one I posted and I listen to my Wife.. She is at work now so I will upload this on Dial UP … OMG.. and share it .. For hand held and low light with a 70-300 Sigma .. I have a Super Macro coming in soon.. will work with that learning curve and limited DOF.. / Chuck This Would Look Great By Your Desk

What can I say? This creature mesmerised me…and almost got me questioned by the staff at the Hardware/Nursey place. / I have no idea what type of dragonfly she is.(she? Yes…well usually the females in insects are bigger than the males! This one was HUGE at approxiamtely 4 inches from eyes to tip of tail….) I am entering this in the “Upclose and Spineless Photographic competition ” run by the Australian Museum. I have discovered it is called a “T-Mark” Emerald Dragonfly. You can see the T mark clearly on his nose.
Common Green Darner (Anax junius) covered with water drops from an early morning rain sprinkle sits on a purple cone flower in my back yard waiting to dry out. In a half hour he was dry and gone. Photographed in Fort Frances, Ontario. SOLD as a mounted print – March 22, 2009. / SOLD as a greeting card – October 27, 2009

THE SUBJECT: / A handsome specimen of the male Orthetrum caledonicum (Blue Skimmer Dragonfly) caught in the gorgeous light late on an autumn afternoon. THE LOCATION: / Beside a large pond on a Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club friend’s property at Kundabung, between Kempsey and Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING of ‘Powder Blue (Orthetrum caledonicum – Blue Skimmer Dragonfly)’: / With my lens stretched out to its full zoom I stood at times teetering on the crumbling edge of the pond trying to get just that bit closer to the Dragon. Gravity almost got me once but luckily I recovered my balance. / Fuji S9600: RAW, f/4.9 @ 1/170sec, Manual focus, ISO80, Hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. Visit the Insects & Spiders collection in my BubbleSite Gallery for more wingéd delights. A dragon fly, sunning itself on the stone wall beside the main (large) pool of the main garden in Mt Annan Botanical Gardens. Extreme provocation was needed to unseat this insect who, it seemed, was quite happy to sit through 20 or more flash bursts, just to warm itself up. I realise this is a living organism, but honestly, it does look like a childs R/C toy copter. To be honest, despite being efficient hunters and magnificently proficient aeronauts, dragon flies do seem as though they were put together in a hurry (quickly mass produced in a factory, ready for the Christmas silly season). Big red fire-engines, with wings, and teeth. They seem to lack that “Finished” quality of other insects, and yet as fierce preditors, they have survived and not needed to evolve a smoothness of lines as have other, less successful insects.
