The Changling – Dragon Tales Wouldn’t it be wonderful to find this on a walk in the forest! As a child I was given a book called The Butterflies Ball and I just adored the full page colour illustrations. I would stare for hours at the illustrations of fantastic creatures, it was wonderful fuel for the imagination of a child;) / Image copyright © 2008 Shanina Conway. Drawn 2008. Age 21. Drawn with a blue biro pen and a blue colouring pencil… and a slight coat of polish in Photoshop. That there, holding tightly to the cave. is a Plar. / Plars are intriguing little creatures. Beneath their small and fragile form… and past their big alluring eyes… is a courageous and determined spirit. I’m writing a book on them at the moment, a children’s book… So i like to think of this image and my other previous Plar drawings as playful ideas and concept art This scene is an important one… The Plar doesn’t see a furious beast, he sees a reflection of himself; he sees a creature that is saddened by loneliness. The dragon is feared by animals, hunted by warriors and greedily sought for their thick scales. It is a creature that is forever cursed by its majesty. .. Doomed to live and die alone. / This Plar, however, can see past the Dragon’s evil exterior; he can look beyond the teeth, the claws and the mighty roars. He doesn’t see rage… He sees sorrow and sadness… He sees loneliness. This is why this Plar has climbed high into the sky to the Dragon’s cave… This is why he has picked the rarest flower and offered it as a gift… This is the Plar’s loving gesture. Plar Poem: Plar – Beautifully Blue More Plar sketches Plar – Peek-a-Shroom Plar – Scared of Heights *Plar – A Proud Knight *

Dragon art. The old saying is true. Never judge a book by it’s cover. How many times during the course of life have you prejudged someone by their appearance without getting to know what makes them tick? Is it because they aren’t pleasing to your eyes or that they are different that they aren’t worth your time? / Here our friendly dragon is cooling off from the heat of the evening. These gentle giants never judge anyone and will always welcome you to get up close and personal in the land of Bryce. © 2008 Dave Moilanen

Spread from my children’s book in one of my senior thesis classes. Its about my sister and I, Korean folklore and my interpretations of it as a child.
Once they all believed in dragons / When the world was fresh and young, / We were woven into legends, / Tales were told and songs were sung, / We were treated with obeisance, / We were honored, we were feared, / Then one day they stopped believing / On that day, we disappeared. / Now they say our time is over, / Now they say we’ve lived our last, / Now we’re treated with derision / Where once we ruled unsurpassed. / We must make them all remember, / In some way we must reveal / That our spirit lives forever— / We are dragons! I like the idea of a dragon that breathes flowers- this is an idea that is several years old (though this is a new treatment). It makes a dragon less than threatening, but nice to have around.
