Painted from an 1880’s photo, of the fishing port of Whitby on the North East coast of England. Here, laid up, is the collier brig, ‘Opal’. The ruins of the priory, immortalised by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, can be seen on the hill. My first pen and watercolour work. Watercolour washes over a pencil drawing, then finished in ink. Hannemuhle, 200lb paper 7”x 8”.

  • Old Ruins
    by Natalie Mason

    US$4.28–US$114.00

A haunting landscape scene, depicting the old ruins of St. Hilda’s Abbey at Whitby, North Yorkshire, on England’s east coast. Lore has it that this was the final resting place of Dracula, until the cliffs eroded, carrying his coffin off in to the sea below. Imagine you are stood there, actually viewing the Abbey as it is in the painting. The cliffs are literally a few feet behind you! Quite a scary place (esp. at night) for that reason alone! If you ever get a chance to visit this amazing place, I highly recommend it! Walk the 199 steep steps up the hill, to where the Ruins of this once beautiful Abbey resides. Canvas size 76×51x3.8cm (30×20x1.5”), on chunky boxed frame, staple free sides and fully painted edges, make this piece ready to hang. SOLD – However if you like this piece and would like something similar, please contact me at www.mason-contemporary-arts.co.uk with your requirements.

  • Fear and Despair: Nosferatu
    by Mathew Reed

    US$3.80–US$101.33

Fear and Despair is a series of works based on the basic human emotion of fear, while touching on depressive moods. It explores the concept that spirits live among us and that their presence can be felt in the physical world, often manifesting as deep and powerful emotions. There are numerous references in the work, the grays, who appeared in the previous series A boy and his monster. Nosferatu’s version of Dracula. The Hatted Hunter, who appeared in the previous work The Relentless Pursuer. And finally Zombie who is a reoccurring character, best known for his appearances in the works Trinity of the Self and The Weight of a Heavy Burden. Nosferatu is pretty much the beginning of horror in film, with his grisly face and awkward walk. I wanted to nod back to film industry and how it often influences the design and imagination of modern day society. Ink and an inkjet print on photographic quality cotton paper, / 2008 Clip from Nosferatu
