Specifically Software

Link listing of free software relating to graphics and imagery. These are either freeware, open source or donationware – not free trials. Some are “light” or free versions of a full-version software. As with anything, PLEASE READ THE TERMS OF USE and Licensing for each thing you download. Just because it is free that doesn’t always mean you can use it for commercial outputs. I have not tried all of these personally, so I can’t give you recommendations on their functionality; the graphic/paint programs I have used (some I still use for certain things) may have notations of my opinion. Many of these are available for both Mac and PC, but you’ll have to go check at the link site yourself – make sure you check the system requirements before you install anything, and be sure you have an up-to-date antivirus. I have accessed all of these links and downloads with no warnings, but it pays to be safe. One last thing…if you use free software and find it useful, please donate to the creators (or upgrade to the paid version if they have one at reasonable cost). Donations are how we can encourage free software makers to continue making the software free. GRAPHICS & PHOTO Editing Artrage2 (free version & paid version is only $25 – freeware version is somewhat limited but good for basic art) Artweaver (decent simple painting program with variety of drawing styles and supports layers and transparency – good for creating patterns and texture) Cenon for mac or linux (haven’t used this since it won’t work on PC, but it looks interesting and I’d love to try it) Gimp (one of the most powerful open source image editors with an interface and functions similar to Photoshop) ImageMagick Inkscape Vector Graphics program (a bit of a learning curve with this; similar in function to Adobe Illustrator) Paint.net (drawing and paint program; supports layers) Pixarra’s Twisted Brush Free Edition Pixia Drawing & Painting) Photofiltre – this is free, the studio version is 29 euros (the studio version supports layers and transparency and has many functions similar to Photoshop) Project Dogwaffle Free Version Serif DrawPlus Skencil Vector Graphics Smooth Draw Nx PANORAMA MAKERS Open Source Panorama Tools Autostitch Canon Panorama Stitch PanoGuide FRACTAL PROGRAMS Apophysis Chaoscope Double Fractal Endlos Fractal Explorer Fractal Forge Fractal Studio Fractint Gnu Xaos Mandala Explorer Tierazon Specifically for Mac – fractals Spangfract / Spanky’s Fractals for Mac Listing IMAGE CATALOGUES/ORGANIZERS Lightbox / Picasa WEB-BASED IMAGE EDITORS (thanks to Jo Obrien for this link – there’s ten image editors here that are web-based) 10 Web Editors 3D SOFTWARE Amabilis 3D Canvas Anim8or Art of Illusion Blender Bryce 5.5 Daz3D Studio POV-Ray Serif 3D Plus SketchUp sPatch Terragen trueSpace from Caligari Wings 3d World Creator and Buttonmaker by Inet 3d Add-ons, Utilities and Models (listed on Verchi forums) General Use For Bryce and Blender For Daz3D, Poser and Others The above links are to 3 forum threads (stickies) elsewhere – the lists were compiled by me for that forum (which is now defunct, but still accessible), and includes plugins, add-ons and utilities, and links to sites where you can obtain things like free models for 3D and free textures. Please be sure to check the model downloads for licensing terms. If you are unsure about using a model in a sellable product, email the modeler – they are usually very good about responding. Mostly they don’t want you sell or give away the model/mesh, but will usually allow it’s use in a rendered image for sale. If the license doesn’t state that it is available for commercial use, please don’t use it without contacting the owner first. A simple email from them will act as a license for your renders. If they don’t allow it, please don’t do it. Other Useful Utilities PC Inspector Smart Recovery – recover image files from memory cards This is not a complete listing of all freeware available, but it is fairly representational of what’s available, from the simple to the more complex. If anyone has links that fit these categories, please feel free to add them in the comments section, or bmail them to me and I’ll add them into the body with a notation of who submitted them. There are also some drawing & paint programs in the free/open source category available specifically geared to children in age ranges from 4 or 5 to 10 or 12. Encourage the artist in your children from a young age. Tux Paint Drawing for Children Smooth Teddy One of the reason’s for this compiled list is that I find myself frequently pointing people to links for software of this nature. I just thought it would be easier to keep it one place.

I’ve posted this over at the forums but I thought it was important to post here as well. The following chart was made to help take the guess work out of how your t-shirt design colours will look after Red Bubble’s colour conversion. I simply took a CMYK swatch palette from Photoshop and put it on a t-shirt in Redbubble. As a result, all the colours were converted. Update- I’ve now added coordinates so you can easily find the relating colours between each swatch set. -In the first block of swatches is an extensive range of CMYK colours which you can use while in RGB or CMYK mode to colour your designs. On the bottom is how these colours will be converted on RB’s shirt design preview. For a larger version of the colour guide you can go here (copy and paste in your browser)- http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/1130/tshirtcolourguidenewwl6.jpg Hope this helps everyone.

Showing off your Calendars - Part II

I recently added a journal entry on how to show off your calendars by embedding the individual preview images for the cover & each month here . Last Friday we released some new functionality to allow you to preview your calendar via a downloadable pdf file. This gives another way of being able to publically show your calendar, and potentially via different means. If like before, you go into mybubble -> calendars -> edit calendar -> buy/preview then you should now see a link below your preview image saying “You can download a reduced-quality PDF preview here”. Here is a link to my snow calendar as a PDF, the same one as in the previous journal article. This is a file of only a few MB that can be downloaded and saved or opened up in acrobat reader. Note that this is low quality preview only, it does not have the full detail of the final printed version. The idea here is it gives you a little more detail than the standard web preview, and allows for your whole calendar to be conveniently ‘shared’ in one file. So, you can copy that link (right click in your browser and select the appropriate option) and then do things like embed it in your journal entries, add it to emails, or put it on other websites as you would like. You could also attach the saved pdf to an email, and send it directly to an friends or family that may be interested in seeing/buying your calendar.

I got a nice email today from a UK record company asking that i send them a CD of my music… / It’s very premature to say how this will all go, but i must confess it took me by suprise and has made me feel absolutly overjoyed that even the hint of a possibility of being able to make a pro-level CD… / man this could be sooo cooool.. anyways, / all this could turn to dust, and nothing happen, but i thought id have to let people know. As a bonus / here / is an electronic CD of mine you can download. / it has all the neccesary bits and pieces to get the 2 music files, covers and all that so you can burn the cd and have labels and stuff to have a physical cd too….

Hiyah! Im really lovin the function where we can view a larger version of the image, but just noticed that we can also download that larger version as well. / I know the resolution is not big that anyone could print a large print out of it, but is actually enough for people with like me (photoshop skill) to reproduce it, even with watermark, people can still erase it. How do we avoid people from downloading the image? I know there are some flash based website where they have images but we can only view them, but this is flash.

Because the RB forums are filling to the brim with thousands of questions, suggestions, statements, and answers, I’m repeating this here: Would the RB administrators allow the font-type (in the RB logo top left of page) be made available as a TTF? (for windows and mac) / I’m interested to use this font in my new web-page

Are you a Mozilla Firefox browser user? Sick of working out if you are spelling a word correctly (either with an external program, or having to open a paper-dictionary, or worse yet, opening Microsoft Word)? / The people at Mozilla have had an answer available. It’s one easy step to add the dictionary and spell-checker to Mozilla Firefox for your language of choice. Now you can type your Journal and Writing knowing you’ve spelt that werd rite, corectly and without riping your hair oubt. Nough, whenever a word is spelld rong, a red line apears under it. Right click over that word to get a choice of alturnative words to replace it. If you haven’t checked for updates/upgrades in a while, it’s definitely time … because the spell-checker is finally a standard in the program download! Schweet! 1. Menu Bar at top of browser screen. / (Menu,Edit,View,History,Bookmarks,Tools,Help) / 2. Click on ‘Help’. Go down DropMenu till you find ‘Check for Updates’. / 3. Just sit and wait – the browser does the rest for you. / 4. Follow the prompts carefully – your browser may need to close down to apply updates.

Just got an e-mail from Sitepoint (online publishers of software manuals and other books) about a special giveaway they’re having. They’re giving away The Photoshop Anthology: 101 Web Tips, Tricks & Techniques as a PDF file for the next 13 or so days. I have not yet downloaded it, so can’t comment on the quality of the book as yet. I have downloaded sample chapters from some of the other Sitepoint books and even bought some, and I’ve been happy with their service. Just thought I’d share :) Edit: I can tell you a little more now – they have two versions of the book, high-resolution is 64Mb and low-res is 23Mb. I’ll let you guys follow the proper route rather than give you the direct links, though :) It can take a while for their e-mail with the links to arrive, but it does eventually. I’ll go do my downloads in town next week, I suppose.
