IF you can keep your head / When all about you are losing theirs / And blaming it on you. / IF you can trust yourself / When all men doubt you / But make allowance for their doubting too. / IF you can dream and not make dreams your master. / IF you can think and not make thoughts your aim. / IF you can meet with triumph and disaster. / And treat those two impostors just the same. / IF you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken / Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools / Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken / And stoop and build’em up with worn out tools. / IF you can make one heap of all your winnings / And risk it on one turn of pitch and toss / And lose, and start again at your beginnings / And never breathe a word about your loss. / IF you can force your heart, and nerve, and sinew / To serve your turn long after they are gone / And so “hold on” when there is nothing on you / Except the will which says to them “hold on!” / IF you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue / Or walk with kings, nor lose the common touch. / IF neither foe nor loving friend can hurt you. / IF all men count with you … but none too much. / IF you can fill the unforgiving minute / With sixty seconds worth of distant run. / Yours is the earth, and everything that’s in it. / And which is more … You’ll be a Man, My Son. / by Rudyard Kippling Inks, enamel, pigment and metallic leaf – Image best viewed in large format

Doubtful Sound, Fiordland, New Zealand on a beautiful sunny winter day. This was just after a large dump of snow in the area. Despite the sunny sky it was very cold – you can see the ice on the surface of the water in this shot.
I love this concept and was inspired to do a series of my own by the very tallented rudeboyskunk

This is my friend Ingvill – she was sweet enough to model for me on a late summer’s eve last July :)

The tallest walls cast the longest & deepest shadows but the darkest of shadows are spawn from the brightest of pure light. Some walls we create ourselves and some are created by situations beyond our control. Regardless of how they are created, we are left with a choice on how we deal with them. Due to the overwhelming oppressive shadow that a wall can cast, it may seem easier to succumb to the darkness and be imprisoned within the shadows; to fade away un-noticed, isolated and alone. / Emancipation is created in just one simple step out into the light. To summon the will to take that one small step can at times seems as though it’s a quest to traverse a mountain range. Sometimes a hand from another is required to get on ones feet but the first step must come from the will of the individual. Only once it has been taken can it be seen for all it is… a simple step. This image was inspired by the song These Walls by Dream Theater. If you dig this image and have some spare time, check it out. I find it inspires in taking that first step.

Hand-held camera on deck of a small ferry-boat, plus Mick was holding me steady on the boat as I shot. My first experience of snow, shot last year in New Zealand en route to Doubtful Sound. Doubtful Sound is the second largest of the 14 fiords in Fiordland National Park. This is an area naturally high in fresh water inflows (7.6 metres of rain falls annually). The area features generally steep terrain, much of it inaccessible on foot, that is heavily forested except for locations where surface rock exposures are extensive.Wildlife to be found in Doubtful Sound includes fur seals and penguins (Fiordland crested and blue), or even rare large whales (Southern Right, Humpback, Minke, Sperm and some Beaked Whales). The waters of Doubtful Sound are also home to an abundance of sea creatures, including many species of fish, starfish, sea anemones and corals. It is perhaps best known for its black coral trees which occur in unusually shallow water for what is normally a deep water species.Doubtful Sound is unusual in that it contains two distinct layers of water that scarcely mix. The top few meters is fresh water, fed from the high inflows from the surrounding mountains, and stained brown with tannins from the forest. Below this is a layer of cold, heavy, saline water from the sea. The dark tannins in the fresh water layer makes it difficult for light to penetrate. Thus, many deep-sea species will grow in the comparatively shallow depths of the Sound. (ref: Wik) Same shoot: /
All my own images. And – as usual, the LARGE view should be worthwhile to be able to best appreciate the finer detail. Thank you :) I am also interested in any and all opinions re this image – this is the first one in this series that I have placed in a somewhat more ‘real’ environment… I have some concerns that this detracts from the ethereal quality of the image, and the quality of expressing a ‘state of being unknown, and/or not even existing’, and leads it more toward a realm of ‘cliche’? / Please – let me know honestly what you think :)))
