Eilean Donan Castle one of the Iconic Scottish Castles was just a magic place to visit and photograph. I spent close to 9 hours taking in the surrounds, the atmosphere and the serenity and of course the odd photo or two. Here is one of my favourites, I really like the balance of light and the reflections. This was the 3rd last photo I took during this 9 hour period, and goes to show that patience can pay off. Romance depicting heroic or marvelous deeds, pageantry, romantic exploits etc Eilean Donan castle bathing in the early afternoon light _As one of the most iconic images of Scotland, Eilean Donan is recognised all around the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most important attractions in the Scottish highlands. Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries. Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. Eilean Donan (Scottish Gaelic for Island of Donan), is a small island in Loch Duich in the western Highlands of Scotland. It is connected to the mainland by a footbridge and lies about half a mile from the village of Dornie. Eilean Donan is named after St Donan, a Celtic saint martyred in the Dark Ages. by joakright afore ye aw start aw naw another photy o the worlds most photograghed castle..joaks hud tae dae yin anaw ..an noo we will huv tae listen tae more historical shite…zzzzzzzzzz…well i am gonny tell ye somethin…i once did a film here..it wis an italian comedy thing aboot braveheart….i ken since when did italians become comics…weel they might be guid at buildin empires hunners o years ago an other things like buildin tanks wi 4 reverse gears..wait a minuite empires that didny include scotland cos wee gave them a dooin …anyway …beein funny isny yin o thier strong points..am only kiddin ma italian freends am havin a wee joke ..ye ken comedy!...any way it wis a medieval market scene an me an the dugs were in it…aw thing wis goin fine an dandy until some eejit let chickens run aboot …fekin chickens an deerhounds!!!.. chaos!...william wallace himsel couldny huv done mair damage!..anyway i bet ye didny expect that wee story wi an eilan donan shot!

Please View Large Eilean Donan is a Scottish Heritage Site. Wikipedia © The original castle was built in the early 13th century as a defence against the Vikings. By the late 13th century it had become a stronghold of the Mackenzies of Kintail (later the Earls of Seaforth). In 1511, the Macraes, as protectors of the Mackenzies, became the hereditary Constables of the Castle. / In 1539 Iain Dubh Matheson, chief of the Clan Matheson died whilst defending the Castle on Eilean Donan island against the Clan MacDonald of Sleat on behalf of the Clan Macrae and Clan Mackenzie. / In April 1719 the castle was occupied by Spanish troops attempting to start another Jacobite Rising. The castle was recaptured, and then demolished, by three Royal Navy frigates on 10–13 May 1719. The Spanish troops were defeated a month later at the Battle of Glen Shiel. / The castle was restored in the years between 1919 and 1932 by Lt. Col. John MacRae-Gilstrap. The restoration included the construction of an arched bridge to give easier access to the castle. In 1983 The Conchra Charitable Trust was formed by the Macrae family to care for the Castle. A curious distinction is that it has one of only two left-handed spiral staircases in a castle in Great Britain, as the reigning king at the time of building held a sword with his left hand. One strange feature of the castle today is the grey field gun from the Great War, positioned outside the building by a war memorial and fountain dedicated to the men of the Macrae clan who died in the war. / Eilean Donan is the home of the Clan Macrae. In 2001, the island had a population of just one person.
