Thank you to the folks at Northwest Artists (U.S.) and also at National Parks of the World for featuring my work – Half Dome (Yosemite National Park, California) and Tahoe Bay (Lake Tahoe, California). There are so many other superior works in these two groups that I am very much humbled and embarassingly honored by these selections. Thank you very much.

For all of those of you who can get to Cornwall, or perhaps are already there, I totally recommend this here Eden Project gubbins, it’s the largest biome in the world apparently, and asides from wandering the domes, through African, Malaysian, South American climates and on to the Mediterranean, even the shop reveals mad delights. Pencils made from old CD cases, or car parts, bags made from sweet packets, mousemats from circuit boards (they were fantastic) and, um, cacti. Which I think had always been cacti. They also had this W.E.E.E. chap, (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment) 3.3 tonnes of things incredibly well designed to be obsolete soon enough, apparently that’s what an average human throws out in a year. He was massive and his teeth were made from old computer mice. The gardens had hundreds of secret pathways leading to sandpits and restaurants and sculptures, which was quite fun, but wandering through banana groves, cashew nut trees, swamps, 60m palms, waterfalls and horseradish trees in the humidity of the dome, without really being too aware of the covering was the best. I mean, you can look up and go ‘Oh no way, I am not in the Brazillian rainforest, I am at the bottom end of England in a massive greenhouse.’ but you’re only spoiling your own fun. The food available was equally superb. I actually half went to see The Raconteurs, who were playing at The Eden Sessions that happen every year. Yes, I know they aren’t as good as The White Stripes, whom I’m slightly obsessive over, but their albums are 50/50 and you have to see a band before you can write them off completely. As it happens it all looked so damn cool everywhere, I could barely focus on the gig. But for those of you who were appalled at their second album, well, it makes a bit more sense live. Anyway, this isn’t a story, and it doesn’t have a point, but if you happen to be anywhere near the south west of England, pop in, get yourself a biro that used to be a Playstation.

  • Painting Diesel on Decks - DAY 2

So it’s day two here at the Diesel on Decks Dome and things are electric. The crowd is awaiting in anticipation for the next instalment of the Painted Diesel – wondering can he match this digital version of Diesel on Decks > / - and now, we cross live to Diesel, down by the action… Yes Hi Diesel, it’s Diesel here and wow, things are screaming along. The Acrylics have been warming up for a while now, while the Canvas has been deep in serious thought…not sure how things went on in earlier conversation, but if you missed the previous round of Painting Diesel On Decks, you can view it HERE - Wait, Diesel, I’m getting word that they are about to start Painting again – yes, the Acrylics are going head to head with Canvas right now – HERE WE GO! OOH… YES… WOW! OH WHAT A DAY! —-—-—-— Here we can see the HIGHLIGHTS of day two, and if I must say so myself, there was some serious focus, and steady hands put into this effort. Here is Diesel taking hold of the brush and working with the extra ‘shading’ layers on ‘Diesel’. Diesel was aiming to stick with just painting ‘Diesel’ but he boldly chose to venture out and paint the speakers early…a tactic that seemed to pay off. Working heavily with the ‘shading’: He applies it in great detail and almost perfect precision. Amazing. From recent interviews we learned that he decided not to join the colours as the Thick Black Outline would cover up that. Simply breathe-taking excuse. Ground Zero was left in quite a state for day 2. Oooh and the final outcome, not quite GOLD-worthy yet, but in time I am sure it will resonate beautifully with the judges. We asked Diesel what he thought of the painting so far… Well that about wraps up day 2’s highlights, plenty of action down here, back to you in the studio. Thanks Diesel, I am sure within the next few days he will be able to complete this journey and receive a GOLD for his work…he’s got my vote. • My home, a tour

When I decided to build a house here in the mountains of North Carolina I had two choices. Build a traditional house, log or otherwise, or build something to satisfy my soul. Of course I went for the soul. My home is a dome (sort of like a big half buried golf ball or an igloo). In case you don’t know, a dome is also a self-supporting structure that has no internal load bearing walls. The dome shell goes up first. Then the inside walls and rooms are added (yes, I will create a construction journal someday). A dome has oneof the highest snow loads possible of any modern structure (maybe that’s why the Eskimo built igloos). It has the same high wind tolerance. A category 4 hurricane could come through this valley and my house will remain standing. I have 14 inch walls between me and the outside world so I don’t get cold. If it weren’t for the south facing skylights I wouldn’t get hot either. LOL. It is practically impossible to show in a few photographs the experience of being inside my dome. It is full of space, light, angles and rich colors. My dome is designed within the precepts of the sacred circle, taught by many native tribes throughout the world. The entrance of my circle is in the East. The view I cherish with childlike glee of trees in the summer and the Elk River Valley in winter is in the South. I nourish my damaged teen-age soul in the West with my kitchen extension and my self-indulgent bathrooms (jacuzzi tub included), and I do all my thinking, writing, and computer work in the downstairs bedroom/office while facing North. It is also impossible to get a photograph of an entire room, at least with my camera it is. So, I did the best that I can with what I have. I’ve only captured the main rooms for now. I hope you enjoy the show. As seen from the driveway (some driveway, it’s .2 miles long): A partial view of the living room from the front door: / The heat producing skylights (I love them anyway, especially in the wintertime): / The kitchen extension: / The living room as seen from the kitchen: / Another shot of the living room from the deck patio doors: / Looking up at the loft from the living room: / Up the stairs to my master bedroom loft: / The loft skylights: / Skylights you say? All I see is trees from the loft looking South. / Down the stairs: / The living room, one view from the loft: / That’s the short tour. It did not include either bathroom or the guest bedroom/office I wrote of. It also does not show the basement, same footprint as the main floor, which is where I’m setting up my stained glass workshop. As the basement is an even bigger mess than the living area I refuse to show it until it is organized and work is underway. My home is one of my best works of art. I only wish I could do it justice with photos. Maybe someday I’ll have some money and can buy a camera that will show it all with a super wide angle lens. Thank you for sharing my home with me and I hope you’ve enjoyed your stay.
