/ The entrance door to the Gothic-Renaissance style Sponza Palace of Dubrovnik Old Town,completed in 1522, and originally housing the old Customs Hall, and later also the Mint. This is one of my favorite buildings in the Old Town, mostly because of the inscription I have quoted elsewhere, and repeat here: / FALLERE NOSTRA VETANT; ET FALLI PONDERA: MEQUE PONDERO CVM MERCES: PONDERAT IPSE DEVS transl.:Our weights do not permit cheating or being cheated. That was Dubrovnik’s first institution of literary life. This remarkable building survived the earthquake of 1667, and the subsequent fires which devastated much of the Old Town. However, the notable survival of the Dogana possibly is the reason the Dubrovnik survived the disaster at all, as the prime business of trade was able to continue throughout and following the aftermath. Today housing the extensive city archives, among the most impressive collection in the region. Dubrovnik Old Town has been listed by UNESCO since 1979 as a World Heritage site.
