If you can start the day without caffeine, / If you can get going without pep pills, / If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains, / If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles, / If you can eat the same food everyday and be grateful for it, / If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time, / If you can take criticism and blame without resentment, / If you can ignore a friend’s limited education and never correct him, / If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend, / If you can conquer tension without medical help, / If you can relax without liquor, / If you can sleep without the aid of drugs, / Then you are probably the family dog!!!!!!

The upcoming 51st Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival of Arts will be held Thursday 5th June to Monday 9th June, 2008. Some good news on a personal level is that my image Dog Rocks has been judged the Best Photograph Of The Exhibition in the photography competition. The award to be presented is a bronze statuette which has been sculptured by Michael Mandelc, and it depicts Henry Lawson’s “The Drover’s Wife”. Dog Rocks also won the Open Colour section of the competition. I’ve been kindly invited by Tim Wood, coordinator of the photography competition, to attend the Awards Dinner at Grenfell on Saturday 7 June, 2008 6:30PM to receive the award. There is a distinct connection with Redbubble regarding this achievement. Hop Dac, RB staff member, posted a topic in the main forum informing members of this competition. It was there I became aware of the competition, and I thank Hop for doing so. Upon deciding to enter, I ordered six Redbubble matted prints specifically for the competition. I wrote a journal regarding the quality of the matted prints on April 19, 2008 and it can be found here. I’m pleased to say that Redbubble and its community have played a significant role regarding this achievement and I highly value the continued encouragement given by Peter Styles, Redbubble staff and Redbubble members. The achievement is dedicated to my mate Joe Mortelliti, for it was because of him that Dog Rocks was photographed on August 25, 2007. Special thanks to my family for their continued support. Folks, enjoy your creative pursuits here at Redbubble and beyond. Cheers, / Darren. This is little Noah. If I have even less time for photography in the next few weeks, blame him! I pick him up from the breeder this coming Sunday, so he’ll be home for Jan 1st. I’ve been waiting since he was conceived! And yep, his eyes are part blue.

In the past couple of months I have been spending time with the local K-9 search and rescue unit. It all began with photographing their dogs working at training sessions. I’ve come to respect these folks a lot and get along with them great. Outdoors and dogs are both a big part of my life. / Naturally I started getting interested and asked about joining the unit. So, I got an invitation to the membership meeting. / You can see some of those images at my website www.gpifoto.com / August 5, 2008 / Today my Search and Rescue adventure officially began. I went to my first meeting and had my initial interview with Steve Vicks the volunteer director and Terry Nelson Dog Unit Leader. / I have a doctors approval letter and a application letter to fill and return. Until the things become official the dog folks assure me I am welcome to hangout and even participate.

Well as you may have noticed I haven’t been here in three days. My dog Zion a Chow Lab mix threw up the other night and 6 hours later died. He was 15 yrs old and had a great life he loved the outdoors and swimming in the river. He also loved his best friends Chia and Barney. Chia died a month ago he was shot by a land owner in Oregon. Zion was my best friend we went everywhere together. He also loved going for bike rides and ran with the bike very well. When you looked into Zions eyes it was like looking through a window to Heaven. He was the best dog I ever had and I will miss him very much. I am very prone to tears right now but I will be trying to get though this. Scanning in these pics was very hard. My other dog Barney is very depressed right now he has just lost his best friend too. So I will be spending the next couple of days comforting Barney my little Rat Terrier. I love you all and very much appreciate your friendship!! Right now I could use a few hugs myself though. / R.I.P Zion and Chia Best Friends forever… Click on Image to comment at my myspace… / / Zion’s favorite thing was to play with kids at the park and go down the slide… Click on Image to comment at my myspace… / / Best Friends forever… Click on Image to comment at my myspace… / / Zion 1993 – 2008… Click on Image to comment at my myspace… /

The loss of Booger the pit bull terrier was almost more than Bernann McKinney could bear. Now she is happy, minus £25,000 and her house, and owner of five cloned Booger puppies. “It is a miracle for me because I was able to smile again, laugh again and just feel alive again,” Ms McKinney told a news conference in the South Korea capital to show off the week-old black puppies – all of whose names include the word Booger. She sold her house in the United States to raise the £25,000 for RNL scientists to turn skin cells taken from Booger before he died two years ago into embryos carried by two surrogate dogs for two months until giving birth to the puppies last week. After rescuing him from a shelter 12 years ago, Booger had become an indispensable part of her life, said the 57-year-old Californian. The lab said it hoped to make its technology more commercial along with its programme to clone sniffer dogs for the Korean customs service. “As of today, we are at the stage of receiving orders from anywhere in the world,” RNL CEO Ra Jeongchan said.

This afternoon, taking our walk between showers of rain, Sally Fred and I were heading up a hill when Sally decided to go for a gallop past Fred who was a little ahead. He was caught by surprise and began running and ducking to avoid her, and next thing he ran head first into the embankment on the side of the road, coming to an abrupt halt! It was like something on the cartoons. / The only thing that was hurt was Fred’s pride, as he picked himself up and pretended to be interested in something on the other side of the road. I do my best not to laugh at an animal when it makes a fool of itself, but this time I could not help myself, and it was difficult to keep walking up the hill. For the remainder of the walk, Fred kept a wary eye on Sally…..

Bet you thought I’d taken some time off! Hah!! Time off, vacations – don’t know what those are.. Holidays? What’re those?? / I started this a while back (March 31st, for sure) and have been trying to get it done in between other things.. / Day One Session: just some light watercolor washes. Time spent: 1.33 hours with this result: / Day Two Session: more washes but this time adding some of the darker tones. This helps me to place colors where they are supposed to be as opposed to where I think they are. Time spent: 1.10 hours. / / Day Two a little later on: some touch up washes for only 28 minutes. But, it did change the appearance a bit. / Day Three Session: seems I’m getting a little more serious now, doesn’t it. The colored pencil is coming on. Time spent: 2.46 and it’s making quite a difference. / / Day Three once again: I think this would be a good place to tell you what I’m using. Faber-Castell: burnt yellow ochre, sienna brown, brown ochre, yellow ochre and nougat – for now. / / And the Prismacolor: All the warm greys, all the french greys, espresso, sandbar brown, slate blue, black, white, sage green, green ochre, seashell pink, cream, sand, cloud blue, clay rose, rosy beige, ginger root and sienna brown. Before I go any farther, let me share some close ups with you.. / / I don’t know if you can see any of the subtle differences, but I hope you can. Day Four Session: A lot more pencil work but also some changes in the background (I thought it was way to green for the areas that these dogs normally live in). Time spent: 1.19 hours.. and I’m beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, let’s hope it’s NOT an oncoming train (my life is full of those!). / Had a few things to take care of and couldn’t get back to this right away.. forgive me? / At any rate, day 5 session: there are have been some washes done and more pencil work.. but now the foreground animal is beginning to take shape. I’m pretty much finished with the large head but the area where the two dogs meet will have to be tweeked a little more. I think the hardest part of this is going to be to put the grasses in that he/she’s lying on!! Then again, I could be wrong. This session lasted 1.33 hours. / / A little while later (after dinner) I came back to it to start the grass and touch up anything that didn’t look right. Only spent about .55 minutes working on it though. / / And then this morning (June 13) I decided that it was time to put the grass in and make this done.. so I started playing with different colors – lights, darks and medium tones (all watercolor). After all the grass was pretty much done.. I started putting in the highlights and voila! Done.. session lasted .56 minutes. / / I really hope you have enjoyed this one.. it had it’s own brand of challenges (like all that dark fur) and each piece is such a wonderful journey that I almost hate to put my signature on them.. but I did!!

I wanted to share a poem with you that I received from a friend. I also wanted to let you all know that you all have a huge place in my heart. It is times like this that you need your friends and I am so fortunate to have so many beautiful and talented people in my life. I would have put the poem on the memorial page but I knew that it would have been missed… If you would like to visit Tom who wrote this poem his store at greeting card universe is listed on the bottom of page… Thank you all and Big love to those who did comment and even those who didn’t…. As you may of had a hard time with it as I did! So here is the poem… and no need to comment…. / For you Kim, with my regards …. TOM / ========================== / ZION / / When great dogs die, it feels so cold, / The sadness, intense, as the memories unfold, / His bed, his dish, and the leash you hold, / remind you of his life, and his full heart of gold. / / But the funny thing is, no one told him he died, / He’s enjoying a new day, just on a new side. / He’s playing with kids, and there is a new slide, / and when Jesus says “get in,” he enjoys the new ride. / / And he wants you to know, this place has a new park, / he’s even allowed to go there well after dark. / It’s so wonderful there, hardly a need for his bark, / and he’s been welcomed by all, with the kindest remarks. / / So, yes, he’s at peace, and he wants you to be too. / He’d never be happy that this made you so blue. / Rejoice in his life, and you’ll graciously pull through, / for that’s what he’s doing, on the other side, for you. / =================================== / Back to top / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / Comical Captions: / http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/comicalcaptions

It’s dark inside my head lately. The ugly black-dog is winning. I have put up with its ugly presence for over 35 years now and would choose to be free, whole, sane, and normal whatever that is. / It brings one down from the simplest of life’s joys like laughing at something funny, being bothered to get out of the house into the fresh air, doing that thing that is staring at you to be done, but just seems too much for you to achieve. / What helps, pills – sometimes! / People saying: Just get over it – no. / Alcohol – no. / Understanding – to a point. / Hugs – always. / The desire to simply not exist is strong, but I am stronger. Relief in a coffin, while seeming attractive, I know presents no answer. I don’t fear death, in many ways I wouldn’t mind at all, but to achieve that by my own hand is not acceptable. / So I must endure, somehow managing to push through for another 30 or so years – a miserable thought, but, if I keep writing about it, then just maybe I will encourage another to fight on too.

  • Casterton - "Birthplace of the Kelpie" (dedicated to Timbah)
    by Kristy Lee

This will be a long one because it’s about my most beloved thing in the world… / Anyone who knows me really well knows my love of dogs. ...

This will be a long one because it’s about my most beloved thing in the world… / Anyone who knows me really well knows my love of dogs. And in particular – Australian Kelpies. / A certain little kelpie named Timbah being my very favourite of them all. Anyhow, I digress, one of my heroes is the man who discovered and bred the first Kelpies. A stockman by the name of Jack Gleeson. / On my recent trip up the Great Ocean Road, whilst in Portland I realised I was only an hour and a half from Casteron – ‘the birthplace of the Kelpie’ In Casteron, the original Kelpie was born in 1871, coming from a pair of black and tan Collies imported from Scotland. / Now, George Robertson, the owner of these dogs did not want to sell any of his female pups from the stock. / A man named Jack Gleson desperately wanted one however. On seeing this pup, he had to have her. / So in the middle of the night, a nephew of George Robertson took one of the pups his uncle had given him down to the river to meet with Jack Gleeson in secret and trade this special little pup for Jack Gleeson’s stockhorse which the boy had been after for sometime. / Gleeson named the pup ‘Kelpie’ meaning; ‘a malignant water spirit’ / Shortly after this, Jack Gleeson left the distrtict and mated Kelpie with other working dogs along the way…and so the breed became ‘Kelpie’ In Casterton, each year in June there is a huge Kelpie Muster & Festival / But, if you visit any other time of year, there are the ‘Kelpie Trails’ you can walk which take you on a tour of the town and the very spot where Jack Gleeson first met his Kelpie pup. There are some statues along the way so, of course, I had to take some happy snaps… The following poem is an excerpt from the book The Stockmen by Rachael Treasure / originally written by Casterton poet Peter Dowsley. Kelpie A tear rolled down Jack Gleeson’s cheek / For the son he’d never see, / For the dogs he’d never work again, / And what he knew they could be. He’d ridden all the eastern states, / And bred a strain of dogs, in time; / Now he was about to die, / A stockman cut down in his prime. He left his wife and unborn child / And his dogs already famed / His black and tan sheep dog bitch / After which a breed was named… It all started on the Warrock run / Where Jack saw dogs that could work sheep, / Collies brought from Scotland / And a pup he wished to keep. George Robertson wouldn’t sell her, / Not to Jack or anyone. / “When you’ve got dogs like this,” he said, / “They pass them father on to son.” But he gave one to a nephew / Who didn’t follow in that course, / He knew Jack Gleeson pretty well / And had a liking for his horse. He said he’d swap the dog / For Gleeson’s stockhorse tall and stout, / By the old Glenelg at midnight / To save his uncle finding out. And so down by the river / On an eerie moonlit night, / When the Red Gums touch the water / And the yellow-belly bite, Jack Gleeson sat there waiting / With the stockhorse on a lead, / Listening to the tippling waters / And the roos and emus feed. Then a rustling from the bushes / Sent a shiver down his spine, / He looked up to see a horseman pause, / Then wave a knowing sign. So Jack rode on towards the ford, / Where Warrock met Dunrobin run, / They exchanged the pup and stockhorse / And the midnight deal was done. Both horsemen rode off quietly / Through the fast descending fog, / Until Jack stopped above the river / To take a good look at his dog. The sky was clear as crystal / And cold air made him shiver / As the full moon cast his shadow / Down across the fogbound river. His thoughts turned back to Ireland, / Of haunted fords and streams, / By the spectre they called Kelpie / And how it filled his early dreams. He could hear a horse at canter / As he fixed a thoughtful gaze / On the tops of lifeless Red Gums / Jutting out above the haze. He glanced down at the pup / Who picked her ears up at his sight, / Then smiled, called her “Kelpie”, / And rode off into the night. Perhaps he knew Jack Gleeson’s Kelpie / Would be known throughout the land, / Her descendants strong-willed working dogs / Just as the stockman planned. Jack headed north with Kelpie / And broke her in along the way, / A station north of Cootamundra / Was where he’d find the work to stay. As he crossed the Murrumbidgee / He met Coonambil Station’s boss. / It was here Jack mated Keplie / With a Collie dog called Moss. From Forbes to Yarrawonga, / Kelpie’s pups would show their guile, / In the woolshed, on the paddocks / With mobs of thousands or at trial. They became, simply, Kelpies, / Sought for their desire to work, / For their pride, for their intelligence, / With so little that they shirk. Now if you’re heading into Casterton / And the sky is crystal clear, / Make a stop down by the river / And if you’re quiet you will hear A whistle through the Red Gums, / A mob of sheep take flight, / Then horses’ hooves and barking / Will echo through the night. But there is no horseman out there, / No real dogs or running sheep, / Just Jack Glesson working Kelpie, / A spectre Casterton will keep. ________ Thank you Casteron..and Jack Gleeson. For my beautiful, courageous, intelligent and loyal best friend, / TIMBAH

Months ago I set up what was supposed to be a very temporary website for Same Dog Design. I’m at the stage where it’s been a little bit less temporary than I’d planned, so I started thinking about what I want the site to be. What started as an exercise in how I wanted the site to look and feel seems to have become something else. While asking himself how he wanted people to see him and his work, the Dog has started dreaming a bit. And he’s dreaming big – he doesn’t always want to be the little yappy dog that he is now…one day he wants to be a big lumbering dog that bowls you over when you come to visit but you still can’t help loving. There’s a bit of philosophy bubbling away behind all of this stuff that I can’t even begin to explain, but suffice to say I think you’ll see some changes in the beast that is Same Dog Design over the coming months. Some will be in your face like the new website, others will be a bit more subtle, like the type of work I start to show. Of course part of deciding what you want the world to see includes deciding what you don’t need it to see anymore. The Dog’s sniffed at some new territory this year and worn his heart on his sleeve a bit when it comes to expressing opinions. But when you get Sorry Day, World Youth Day and the Olympics all in one year, you almost can’t help but comment can you? He’s not ashamed at any views he’s expressed, it’s just that social comment wasn’t big in the original plans, so most of it will go fairly soon and be replaced with some stuff that’s just a bit more relaxed about the world we live in. So less barking at stuff and more laying on the back in the warm sun from now on. Let the slobbery kisses and tummy scratchin’ begin…

My best non-human friend died yesterday. In his youth, Toto was 10lbs of little black energy. He was our magic dog. One of the cutest dogs to ever live. He looked like Gizmo the gremlin had married Yoda and produced offspring. What breeds were in Toto’s genetics became a party game at our house for years. The closest we could get was Papillion/Poodle cross. Not your usual stray in Albuquerque, but his ears were so large that he looked like he could hang glide on a windy day. His groomers would always say that if they knew what he was, they could sell 100 of him everyday. We had just moved into our new house in Albuquerque about 3 months before he showed up. Having promised our 3 year old daughter a dog after the move, we were dragging out feet about dog hunting. She was holding out for a black lab. Great dogs, but not what we wanted for our first dip into dog ownership. Very early one morning my husband heard a noise in our back yard. Being a bit groggy, he said “I think there’s a big black rat in the backyard!” Later as he left for work (I was still asleep. He goes to work really early.), he said “There’s the cutest little black dog in the yard. If you see him, you’re going to want to keep him.” It was love at first site. He was a matted, shaggy, dirty mess. We looked for his owners for about 1 day. We were all in love by then, even our daughter. She took one look at him and said, “I want this dog. He’s better.” There was a bit of a skirmish over the name. Leslie wanted to call him Rachel. I wanted James as a tribute to James Herriott. My husband suggested Toto as a compromise. Not much of one since I’m from Kansas, and “The Wizard of Oz” is my favorite book. We’ve added and lost other dogs and a few cats over the years, but Toto endured. We would have had him 19 years this April. He was living with us in our home longer than our daughter did. She can barely remember a time before Toto. I know that he wasn’t exactly cut down in his prime, but the loss is devastating. We’re not exactly out of pets either as we still have 2 other dogs and 3 cats at home, but Toto was one of a kind. I called my daughter yesterday morning and left a message on her cell phone. She knew it was important as I rarely call her during the day. She checked the message in French class and burst into tears. Her French teacher and the girl who sits next to her in class both asked at once if she was canceling class and work to be at home with us. Not necessary, but I bless both of those people for their sensitivity.

Hello :) I’m about to head down to the camera shop and say “hand over all of your photo shoot studio set up equipment or the dog get’s it”. Not really, I wouldn’t hurt animals, unless they’re a particularly plump chicken, but I have been known to drop a few lenses. Well one, but it rolled down the hill. Actually, now that I mention it, I’m looking for the paperwork for said lens to take in on account of the strange rattly noise. I just made that up Harvey Norman, in case you’re reading this. Serious. So I thought I’d better check in with my mentors (Wendy, Mel, Rose, Paul, Paul, and Paul, Deke, Dave, Shanghaiwu, Gemlenz, Sam, Ashley, Peter, Barbara) first before I sell our first born and maybe the second. Better wear a shortish dress. Kidding again. Not even. If it get’s me $500 off I’ll wear bells on my shortish dress. See, still kidding. It’s hard to tell though. If you saw me right now, You’d know I wouldn’t be caught dead in bells. Any advice on which equipment I need for a full set up? Thank you :) / www.cathleentarawhiti.co.nz
